L-----------tfELP WANTED For some yeor• I have been trying to get full information on the different indicia used

on OTTAWA SQUARED CIRCLES, particularly during the Small Queens era. It appears that during this period they used Blank and numbers 1 to 8 inclusive.

My records seem to indicate that Blank was used only on Sundays and holidays, but other numben also appear on Sundays and holidays.

I have never seen more than five different numbers used on the same date but I would be inclined to believe that six, seven or even eight numbers were used.

To enable me to get as much detail as possible I would like to buy or exchange on a fair basis as many clear strikes of OTTAWA SQUARED CIRCLES from 1893 to 1898 as possible. I have excellent Squared Circle material to offer in exchange or will buy outright at a fair price.

If you don' t care to sell or trade I would appreciate an opportunity to see what you hove so that I can make a record of the different time markings on variou• dates.

I can offer good to fine strikes of some of the scarcer towns or different dates ond time markings for other towns that may be of more interest to you than Ottawa. I con also offer matched pairs and sets of three Ottowa from my duplicates.

ED. RICHARDSON (SNAPS 168)

Rework the Old Diggin~s . . . THERE'S STILL TREASURE IN THEM THAR HILLS!

ONE OF THE most often repeated complaints of new collectors is that they

either started collecting- or were born, too late! They claim that the age of ":finds" is past! Actually nothing could be further from the truth. Oh sure, you don't hear of many new gold strikes like those in California and British Columbia in the mid-1800s, nor like the Yukon at the close of the century. But the prospectors of today are finding minerals far more valuable than gold will ever be, in areas that had already been worked over by earlier prospectors.

T he same is true today in stamp collecting. Certainly your chances of coming up with a 12d Black on cover are rather remote, but you have a better chance of making a "find" of marketable philatelic material today, and will gain far larger financial rewards than did the bulk of the earlier philatelic prospectors! Some of the best "finds" to be made today will be brought to light by reworking the old diggin's. The earlier, the pioneer philatelic prospector, was hunting for STAMPS-stamps which had a marketable value at that time! Not based on today's prices. He was not interested in those stamps which had very little value at that time; he was not interested in covers; and only to a very limited degree was he interested in postal stationery. Insofar as Canadian philatelic material was concerned this was the general prospecting practice until after World War I.

lectors now began to appreciate the numeral cancels on the 5c Beaver, which prior to this period was a stamp which could be bought in wholesale quantities. The Large Queens were not overlooked either- with their 2-ring numeral cancels, and some of the earlier fancy corks, etc. Even a few had the foresight to set aside Small Queens on cover with their tremendous range of fancy cancellations, shades, etc. But again, they cast aside anything which did not at that time appear to have a ready market.

For some time now we have been in what might be called the third wave--the modern wave of prospectors. Still these same old diggin's, plus many new ones which did not look promising before- are now turning up new finds of valuable philatelic material. For the most part this material was overlooked by the first two groups of early philatelic prospectors.

The new philatelic Uranium is to be found wherever there is an accumulation of correspondence and postal cards, made during the period 1890-1920. The stamps which one is likely to :find on correspondence of this period are still items which have relatively small value. Even where an earlier prospector has gone through the material, it is less likely that he practiced philatelic vandalism on this material. The stamps just

In the twenties and early thirties along came the second wave of philatelic prospectors. Armed now with new philatelic literature (even a few had the where-with all and foresight to invest $6 in Jarrett's B.N.A. handb.ook)--they started to rework these old diggin's. But again - they were looking for marketable material of that period. This new interest was centered mostly on the early cancellations. Col-

telic prospectors.

weren't worth taking the time to tear them off the covers!

This modern wave of prospecting has been going on now for probably the past 10 to 15 years-but even here some of the first of the modern prospectors overlooked many a good item in their searches. If you have a good philatelic nose, some free time, a lot of patience, then why not join in the search for some of this modern treasure? There is still a vast quantity of it laying around.

Most of these modern-day treasures are the type of material which was often discussed in my column, "The Hollow T ree," in the now-suspended stamp magazine, Popular Stamps. The list of this treasure which follows will not be new to older members of BN APS. For the benefit of newer collectors and members we list some material to look for in these 1890-1920 accumulations. And do not overlook those postal cards (private greeting, view, commemorative, etc.) accumulations and collections. These were popularly collected in the early .1900s.

Dlustrated Advertising Covers. The use of these was greatest during the 1897-.19 J 4 period. Exhibitions, fairs, hotels, and those with patriotic designs are best, but do not overlook colleges, maps, agricultural implements- in fact with the growth in topical collecting in recent years almost any nice illustrated advertising cover has a market. Multicolored illustrated advertising corners, long popular in the U.S.A., are beginning to come into their own with Canadian collectors.

Padposts. These are really illustrated covers too, but on postal stationery,· postcards or envelopes.

War Covers. Accumulations of this period will often turn up some interesting material related to Canada's participation in the Boer War or in World War I. The interest in this material has had prenomenal growth since about 1950.

Pictorial Railroad Cards. These are really a special branch of Padposts-are extremely popular, and have been collected for a longer perio~ than other Padposts. Apt to be found almost anywhere as they were used for reports to stockholders, and other official communications. Express cards, and Facsimile Money Order cards are two other specialized groups of Padposts that deserve special attention. Used mostly from 1899-J 922. Some railroad cards, however, go up through 1930. Express cards are still used today.

Flag and Machine Cancellations. These

were first used in 1896. Some of the early ones are extremely scarce. ·The early machine cancels have never gained much popularity as yet, but the early Flag cancels are in good demand. A. L. McCready's (BNAPS 1395) handbook, "Canadian Flag Cancellations," has contributed much to their popularity.

Squared Circle Cancels. These were first used in 1893, and continued in quite general use up to the end of the 19th century, with some towns continuing their use until 1910 and later. This group of cancels plus the fiag cancels often turn worthless accumulations of common government postcards of that period into a valuable philatelic find. Dr. Alfred Whitehead's handbook on "The Squared Circle Postmarks of Canada" first published by this Society in 1954, with a second edition appearing just a month ago, has contributed to their popularity. This is an excellent example of the type of treasure the earlier prospectors overlooked. Even backstamps are collected.

Railroad and Territorial Cancellations. These have enjoyed popularity for a longer period, but there are still vast quantities to be released from their attic hideouts. ,

Commemorative Postal Cards. Another group with good philatelic possibili ties. Not too much known about them as yet, but when they come to light they have been eagerly sought after. Examples of these are of course the extremely interesting Victoria Mourning Cards and Covers of 1901, the DianiOod Jubilee celebration cards of 1897, the King Edward Coronation cards, the Quebec Tercentenary commemorative cards and the Territorial Expansion cards of 1905. These last-mentioned are often overlooked, but seem to have been extensively used. They were issued about the time that Alberta and Saskatchewan became new provinces in the Dominion of Canada.

Early Perfins on Cover. These were generally not appreciated by the earlier prospectors, but today are in demand by perfin collectors. Who knows, you may even help perfin collectors to identify the companies which used these. Some are still not known.

These are by oo means all the possible types of interesting material of this period. There are other cancellations as wellduplex, street, and even the occasional unusual one, like the Esquimalt Sun-ray Crown cancel I found on a card franked with the lc Edward. Then, too, do not overlook the early Slogan cancels, as those of 1910-1920 are especially good and sought after.

An illustration of the type of finds which

can be made in this material was three shoe boxes of common Canadian postcards of this period which were put up at a stamp club auction not too many years ago. Unfortunately yours truly only got a third of a loaf, as he felt that one box was probably enough. How 1 wish I'd bought them all! Squared circles from GRETNA, NEWMARKET, BERLIN, BEAMSVILLE, KINCARDINE, and loads of other scarce strikes. A total of about 200 squared circles were in that box. They sold for the sum of $3 per box! Another small lot of Maple Leafs and Numerals on cover turned up a scarce WOLSELEY strike. Another small lot of covers addressed to Auburn, N.Y., the kind that the early prospectors had passed by as worthless, came my way a year ago, and among them the rare WATFORD strike on a 3c Small Queen. A small lot of picture postal cards offered to me for 50 cents turned up a number of MOUNT BRYDGES squared circles.

Quit bemoaning the fact that all the attics, legal offices, and business records have been cleaned out of Canada Pence issues on cover-that there are probably very few finds to be made in 2-ring and 4-ring numeral cancels on 5c Beavers and Large Queens awaiting the prospector of today. No, there may be very few finds of SmaJI

Queens with their interesting fancy cancellations yet to be made. Don't worry about what has gone by- start today to do your prospecting where treasure still lies awaiting the philatelist- the correspondence of the 1890-1920 period.

There's something more than gold, in them thar hills! *

Greetings to aU BN.APS Members My 5 cent Beavers are gone, including the China covers. (Any fancy Beaver cancels should be sent to Arnold Banfield. He might trade some Consorts for them.) I am concentrating on Small Queens and would like to buy or swap fancy cancels, squared circles and circular towns.

SQUARED CIRCLES FOR INDICIA: • lew (Hotshot) ludlow wants Hamiltons • Braden Elliott wants Kingstons • Clarence Westhaver wants Bellevilles and Halifax • Billy Russell wants St. Johns, (N.B. not Que.l) • Clarence Kemp wants Ottawas • Doc Whitehead wants them all but especially Paris and Owen Sound

Fix them up flrst but if there are any WINNIPEGS left over send them on to me. Dates and indicia must show. Am interested in circular town cancels on Small Queens off cover, especially from the smaller post offices. Will buy or have duplicates for trade. Strong in Ontario but weak in the Maritimes.

VANCOUVER BRITISH COLUMBIA

Plan to holiday in British Columbia during 1960, and while there be sure to see as many of your fellow SNAPS members as possible. They don't all live in Vancouver. You will flnd them in the lovely Oka· nagan fruit growing district and, of course, on Vancouver Island.

Cancellations on Canada '59 issue especially needed. But I'm interested in buying or trading anything - including
