Let the Countdown begin

With the wins in game Wednesday over Lincoln Joe Calfapietra now is 971 wins as a manager. He is set to be the next indy manager to 1000 win. St. Paul Manager George Tsamis reached 1,000 career wins back on June 12, 2018. He joined former Fargo

boss Doug Simunic, current Gary Manager Greg Tagert and second year Chicago Dogs Manager Butch Hobson in the 1,000-win club in indy ball. Joe Calfapietra was named 2018 American Association Manager of the year September 4th after leading the T-Bones to a 62-37 record and a playoff berth as the second-place finishers in the south division. He led the team to their first title as members of the American Association and the third in franchise history. The Eastern College alum also helped a league-leading eight players into organizational ball since the end of the 2017 season. Calfapietra is in his second season as the T-Bones’ manager and became the first manager in franchise history to have back to back winning seasons in 2018. The 46-year-old has an overall record of 967-820 in 19 seasons as a manager, all at the independent level. Joe Calfapietra was named the T-Bones sixth manager in the club’s history on November 30, 2016. Calfapietra (pronounced Cal-fa-pee-eh-tra), 47, brings an overall record of 905-783 into his second season in Kansas City and his 18th season as a manager, all at the independent level. Calfapietra guided Kansas City to the second-best overall franchise record in the club’s history (57-43) with the team finishing in a three-way tie for a post season spot for the league the wild card. The T-Bones did not advance due to a tie breaker but Calfapietra turned over the 2017 roster with only one hold over from the 2016 helping the club reached a franchise high of 84 days above .500 out of a 109-day season. Despite a 1-5 start to begin the season, his 2017 club reached .500 at 7-7 at Sioux Falls on June 2nd and stayed at or above for 93 days and 83 in a row. With the win on August 26th at Gary, Calfapietra won his 900th career game. He hit the 50-win mark August 23rd at home against Cleburne for the seventh straight season. Calfapietra spent 14 seasons as the manager of the New Jersey Jackals of the Can-Am League before taking over

the dugout reigns of the T-Bones in 2017. While in New Jersey, only four of those 14 teams did not reach the postseason. The Jackals won the league championship in 2004, at the end of Calfapietra’s second season in New Jersey, and then his teams reached the league championship series in five consecutive seasons, 2011-15. In 2016, the Jackals went 62-38, before losing in the first round of the Can-Am playoffs. The T-Bones and Calfapietra’s Jackals faced each other seven times in interleague play since 2012, with New Jersey winning four of those games. Calfapietra started his coaching career in 1994 in this organization, when the T-Bones were in Duluth, Minn., and were known as the Dukes. In 2002, Calfapietra was the first-ever manager of the Gary SouthShore RailCats, where he was the league manager of the year, before starting with New Jersey the following season. Calfapietra lives in Collegeville, Pa., with his wife and their two daughters, ages 18 and 12. Calfapietra is the T-Bones’ sixth manager since the team moved from Duluth prior to the 2003 season and when he took over in 2017 he replaced John Massarelli, who went 139-160 in three seasons with Kansas City, including 42-58 in 2016.

Singing in the Rain

The back to back rain outs this week at home was the fourth time that the T-Bones have had back to back rainouts in a season. The last time was in 2015 when the T-Bones were washed away on back to back nights in Joplin on June 17th and 18th that season. In 2003 the last series was hampered by rain. On August 30th and 31st the T-Bones and the Sioux Falls Canaries had back to backs over Labor Day weekend eventually finishing the series with a single game on the 1st. In 2004 there was a suspended game followed by a rainout and the most famous of all was the 2008 Northern League Finals where Gary had a sink hole in left field with three days of rain to hold off the KC Championship celebration.

Position switch

RHP Marc Magliaro worked two scoreless innings last night. He is an interesting story. Magliaro arrives in KCK with a five-year resume of pro baseball experience, all with the Colorado Rockies organization. Magliaro, a career reliever, has 149 appearances in the minor leagues with a 4.81 ERA in 200.1 innings. Magliaro's route to pitching in the Rockies organization was not a traditional route for a pitcher. He was a non-drafted free agent signee out of Rowan University (New Jersey) in 2013, but he did not pitch until his senior season of college. Magliaro would make a name for himself in college as a shortstop. He was a four-year starter at short with a .328 career batting average in 164 games. He registered 212 hits in 647 at bats with 115 runs scored and 85 RBIs. He stole 39 bases in 50 attempts and produced a .393 on-base percentage while serving as team captain his final year. During his senior season, Magliaro began to close games for Rowan and would notch five saves in eight games over 8.1 innings with four strike outs and no earned runs in 2012. After graduating in 2012, he spent the winter competing in several tryouts as a pitcher where the Rockies took notice and signed him as a free agent pitcher.

MLB Alums While the philosophy if the organization is to get players back to affiliated ball to one day get a chance at the Big Leagues, the T-Bones will feature six former Big Leaguers. RHP Randall Delgado – Arizona, Atlanta RHP Eric Stout – Kansas City IF Shawn O’Malley – Los Angeles (AL), Seattle IF Darnell Sweeney - Philadelphia OF Ryan Brett – Tampa Bay OF Daniel Robertson –Texas, Los Angeles (AL), Seattle, Cleveland

Social on the air

The T-Bones feature a T-Bones Post Game Live on Facebook as well as a daily #CupofSizzle interactive Facebook Live during the lunch hour during the weekdays and selected weekend games. The club also will feature select breaking news and Pre-Game Live events as time and content merit. The Top Step Overtime with Joe Calfapietra will air approximately 10 minutes following the game.

Royal start

Lefty and former Royal Eric Stout got off to a good start Sunday as he tossed five innings of one run ball for KC. He and relieve Kevin Lenik were also teammates at AAA Omaha last season.

Early arms It is early, but KC allowed just 11 walks in the five games against Fargo-Moorhead and Lincoln. The team has struck out 53 in five games in sixth spot but averaging 10.6 a game. League leader Cleburne sits at 7.6 per game.

Alumni report Former T-Bone Nick Torres is having a good start at AAA Puebla in Mexico. In 39 games he is hitting .314 (48/153) with 13 home runs and 43 RBI this season. He is ninth in the circuit in RBI and is second on the club in home runs and first in RBIs.

Historic 2018 Season The T-Bones set a new franchise mark for wins in a season last year at 62 on the way to the American Association crown. The record had been held by the 2010 club led by Manager Tim Doherty who now is a coach at AAA Albuquerque in the PCL for the Colorado Rockies. T-Bones improved on the 2017 record by five games from 57 wins. The all-time best records: 2018-62-37 2010- 58-42 2017- 57-43 2012 -51-49 2015 –49-51 2004, 2011, 2014 – the team won 48 games each year. The T-Bones have finished above .500 just three times in franchise history while winning two titles in the Northern League with a record overall below .500. There were two finishes at .500 at Duluth and another in KC. Joe Calfapietra is the first manager in franchise history to guide the club to two seasons of records above .500. 1996 42-42 George Mitterwald 2000 43-43 Benny Castillo 2004 48-48 Al Gallagher 2010 58-42 Tim Doherty 2012 51-49 Kenny Hook 2017 57-43 Joe Calfapietra 2018 62-37 Joe Calfapietra

KCKCC Product Propels T-Bones to Win Over Flyers 05/24/2010

Former Kansas City Kansas Community College star Jimmy Mojica (pictured) drove in four runs for the Kansas City T-Bones (4-1) tonight as they took game one of a three-game set against the Schaumburg Flyers (1-4), 8-2.

The T-Bones took a quick 1-0 lead against Dustin Glant (1-1) with three straight one-out singles in the first inning, the third an RBI base hit by Ray Sadler. Both teams remained scoreless until a solo home run by Jacob Blackwood pushed the score to 2-0 in the top of the fifth.

After four scoreless frames from Cody McAllister, Schaumburg drew consecutive walks to begin the bottom of the fifth. Following a sacrifice bunt by Travis Brown, Steven Stewart (2-0) entered for Kansas City and struck out his first batter before Chris Schultz tied the game with a two-run single. Stewart retired the next batter with a fly out to end the frame.

McAllister was charged with two runs on four hits in four and one-thirds innings in a no-decision.

Kansas City re-took the lead in the sixth on a two-run single by Mojica that chased Glant from the contest. Glant suffered the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits in five and two-thirds innings.

Stewart left with two outs and the bases loaded in the seventh, but Kyle Dahman induced a fly out to end the threat. Stewart earned the victory after allowing just two hits over two and one-thirds scoreless innings. Dahman closed out the game for the T-Bones, surrendering just one hit in two and one-thirds scoreless frames for his first save of the season.

The T-Bones added another run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Mojica. They capped off the scoring at 8-2 with a three-run ninth, plating the first run on a solo home run by Rico Washington, his first of the season. Ryan Fox added the second tally with an RBI double and Mojica finished off the frame with an RBI single.

Mojica tied a career-high with his four RBI night, ending the contest two-for-four.
