KVGS MEETINGS & NEWS

The February Meeting was held at the Kankakee Public Library on Saturday, February 3, 1996. The program was presented by Cindy Fuerst (Head Librarian) and Judy Kadow (Reference Librarian) on the topic "What's New in the Collections?" The Kankakee Public Library now has the same LDS CD files for patron's use. A motion was also made at the February's meeting to increase the program budget to $300/year.

The March Meeting was a working meeting where newspaper articles were cut out for insertion into the scrapbooks. Checking of the Asbury Church Records as well as typing of the 1870 Census were done.

The April Meeting was an audio tape by Jo White Linn entitled "What Happens to my Research when I'm Gone?

The May Meeting was a program presented by Karen Burden on "Major Manuscript Resources for French-Canadian Genealogy".

The June Meeting was a recheck of cemetery records for Schreffler in Limestone and Grand Prairie Methodist Cemetery in Pilot. Both of these cemetery books should be available by the end of this year.

On June 28, 1996, we had a farewell party for Jack & Peg Paschke who were moving to Florida. It was very difficult to bid them farewell considering how much they have done for the society. Jack prepared the master cemetery list which listed exact cemetery location, name and active status. Peg has worked on so many of our projects and the following is only a partial list: Maternity BVM Death Records, Manteno Cemetery Book, Asbury Church Records, 1870 Census, Herscher and Momence Centennial Book Indexes, Courthouse Indexes, Mound Grove Cemetery Book, 1883 Kankakee Co. Atlas as well as serving as a Director, Member of the Book Committee, Cemetery Committee and Research Committee. Needless to say, we were very grateful for all their work and gave them a lifetime membership to the society. For all those interested in writing to Jack & Peg, their address is 25955 Flowerstone Dr., Bonita Springs, FL 33923. We know they'll follow news of our society and we hope they'll drop us a note occasionally to tell us how they're doing!

1880 KANKAKEE COUNTY DEATHS

Taken from the Kankakee Gazette (publication date in parentheses).

(29 Apr 1880) Lewis E. Nichols, one of the earliest residents of this section, died at his home in this city last Sunday afternoon, of pneumonia, at the age of 80 years. He was born in Stepna, Conn., near Bridgeport, Dec. 6, 1799. He was married in Putneyville, NY, to Emeline Fish, sister of Lyman Fish, of Rochester, at one time mayor of the city. In 1845 he came to this neighborhood, settling near his brother Roswell in the now town of Limestone. on an eighty of government land. At that time there was not a house to the south or west for forty miles. He and his brother's family blazed the first road through the timber on the south side of the river to Wilmington. During the second season of his arrival ne was taken with typhoid fever and for twelve weeks his life hung upon a thread. This affliction affected his mind to the extent of changing him from a sociable, active man who took a strong interest in politics, into one who rarely spoke unless spoken to. He then moved to Joliet and after residing in that town for several years came to Kankakee where he has ever since lived. He was a royal arch mason at the age of 21 and was probably the oldest living mason before his decease in Kankakee county. He was a man of the strictest integrity and lived a quiet, uneventful life in harmony with his peaceable disposition. He leaves a wife 70 years old and six children, grown to manhood and womanhood, to mourn his departure. One brother, Roswell is living, aged 85 years.

(06 May 1880) In Momence, March 27, of consumption, Wm. Paterson, aged 19 years 11 months.

(06 May 1880) In Kankakee, April 10, of consumption, Jacob Haehnle, aged 42 years 11 months.

(06 May 1880) In Wilton Will County, Feb. 15, of Bright's disease, Henry Alles, aged 18 years, 3 months.

(06 May 1880) In Otto, March 6, of inflammation of the lungs, Miss Sennie Pruit, aged 19 years.

EAST OTTO 1880

(13 May 1880) In Aroma, May 8, wife of L. D. Legg, aged 48 years.

(13 May 1880) Mrs. Louis Goudreau, wife of one of our retired business men, died last Saturday morning at one o'clock of inf lammation of the brain. Her illness commenced about ten days previous, but she was not regarded as dangerously ill until within two or three days of her decease. The funeral services were held at St. Rose's church, of which she was a faithful member, Monday morning at half-past eight. The remains were followed to the cemetery by a large number of our people who esteemed the deceased for her many virtues. She was of a most genial disposition, and her home life was a continual blessing to her husband and children.

Mrs. Goudreau was born in Montreal, Aug. 14, 1832. She was married in Buffalo, and in 1854 she and her husband moved to Bourbonnais in this county. In 1860 Mr. Goudreau entered business in Kankakee, and since that time this city has been their home.

(20 May 1880) In Rockville, Feb. 23, of heart disease, Mrs. Hannah Yates, aged 76 years.

(20 May 1880) In Manteno, Jan. 10, of bronchitis, Joseph Lerige, aged 74 yrs.

(20 May 1880) In Aroma, May 8, of liver complaint, Mrs. Ann M., wife of L. D. Legg, aged 51 years. The deceased came to Kankakee Co. in 1836 from the State of Vermont. The best evidence that her life was a success is found in the tender tributes paid to her memory by her sorrowing husband and family. She was for 30 years a member of the M.E. Church.

(20 May 1880) In Manteno, May 6, Mrs. Malina Viall, wife of A.M. Viall, aged 54 years. (The deceased has been a resident of Manteno township for about 25 years, and was highly esteemed by all as a Christian lady, possessed of many virtues going to make an exemplary, charitable, noble woman. She was born to the grave by a large number of sorrowing relatives and friends.)

BUCKINGHAM - 1880 Taken from the Kankakee Gazette, May 6, 1880.

Miss Josephine Wardell died quite suddenly last week. She has been suffering from consumption for a year past, but friends thought her quite well, and were in hopes of seeing her better after warm weather commenced. The morning of her death she helped about the work, and in a short time was dead. The funeral was preached at the house of the father, Major Wardell, by Rev. Mr. Wilson.

SWEDISH CULTURE IN CHICAGOLAND Taken from the Chicago Tribune, May 12, 1996 The first Swedes arrived in Chicago in the 1840's. In pre-Chicago Fire days the original Swede Town was located just north of the Chicago River (near Wells and Division Streets). After the fire, the Swedes moved north to the Lakeview neighborhood around Belmont Ave. In the 1890's they had settled in Andersonville around Clark and Foster. By the turn fo the century, Chicago had become the largest Swedish city in the world outside Stockholm with 145,000 residents who were either born in Sweden or were children of those born there.

Today North Park College and Theological Seminary (Foster and Kedzie Aves./312/244-5615) houses the Center for Scandinavian Studies and the archives of the Swedish American Historical Society. Across the street from the campus you can savor the freshly prepared offerings at Tre Kronor (3258 W. Foster Ave.. 312/267-9888), a wonderful Scandinavian-American cafe.

The focal point of the contemporary Swedish community in Chicago is the Swedish American Museum (5211 N. Clark St. 312/728-8111). A permanent exhibition to America is worth visiting.

Although today's Andersonville is very much an ethnically mixed community, Swedish businesses are still very visible, such as Svea's Restaurant (5236 N. Clark St.); Wikstrom's Deli (5247 N. Clark St.); Erickson's Fish Market (5250 N. Clark St.) and the Andersonville branch of Ann Sather's restaurant (5207 N. Clark St.).

ROCKVILLE - 1880

Taken from the Kankakee Gazette, May 6, 1880.

It's a boy at Harry Tudor's; weighs 12 lbs. Pretty good for a maiden effort.

"Lan" Grimes is getting his little farm is good shape; it will make a splendid piece for winter wheat.

Will Long, of Indianapolis, has been visiting friends in this vicinity for the last few days. He will return to Indianapolis to-day.

Mr. John Corlett's barn is a model structure, containing conveniences not found in every barn.

In our travels last week we met our old f riend Henry Muncey, who is the same jolly "Hank" -"Hankering" for the Gazette.

Mr. D. H. Denny, of Limestone, was severely scalded last week while taking a vapor bath.

ESSEX - 1880

Taken from the Kankakee Gazette, May 20, 1880.

Dan Kriebel, the nurseryman, has returned to Essex for a short time only. We are glad to see his smiling countenance in our midst once more.

Your correspondent took a trip through Norton and happened around where H. C. Paddock was holding an institute. The attendance was rather small. At just a little before noon we wended our way toward the residence of Mr. M. F. Campbell, where we found a table spread with those things which have a tendency to make a hungry person feel happy. After having partaken of a sufficient amount of the good things we spent a short time in chatting with the friends, after which we returned to the school house.

Business seems to be flouring in our little burg. Wm. Odell's warehouse is looming up and will soon be ready to take shelled corn.

D. J. White intends to get in a large stock of hardware in a short time.

D. B. Reid's hotel, which is yet unfinished, has been badly wrecked during the late heavy wind and rain storms.

Miss Emma Hauswirth ended her earthly career on the 9th inst. Her disease was lung fever, from which she suffered a little more than a week, during which time she seemed perfectly reconciled to her Maker. Seeing that those about her were weeping, she asked, "Why do you weep? I don't feel l ike weeping." She f requently expressed a desire to go to that 'beautiful home'. A few days previous to her death she called her parents, her brothers and sisters to her bedside and bade them good-bye and asked them to meet her in heaven. The funeral service was held at the residence of

Theakiki Vol. 26 #3 Page 10

the deceased's parents on the 11th inst., Rev. Simon McLane officiating, after which her remains were taken to Wright's cemetery, followed by a large procession. Emma's age was 16 years, 9 months, 10 days.

The body of Mrs. Ed. Copps arrived today at 1 p.m., from Texas. Mr. Copps accompanied it. Some of the friends were of the impression that she might have come to her death by some foul play no physician having attended her during her two weeks of illness, as Mr. Copps acknowledged. and no one was with her at the time of her death. A coroner's inquest was demanded on her arrival in Essex. Esq. Gregson acted as coroner. The jury's verdict from the evidence given was that "Mrs. Ed. Copps came to her death by a natural course of disease." Drs. McMann, Taxis and Easton were present. The body was in such a state of decomposition that it could not be seen by the female relatives. Her remains were interred this evening in the Wright cemetery. Mr. Copps called her disease inflammatory rheumatism.

PILOT - 1880 Taken from the Kankakee Gazette, May 13, 1880. Farmers all feel blue. Last week too dry to plow; this week starts in too wet. Still, all seems to be getting along nicely. Planting would have been well under way if it had kept dry.

The water is running over the railroad grade on the first mile east of Herscher.

I am informed that a young man nearly drowned north of Herscher. He was on horseback and in attempting to cross the stream, his horse got entangled in a floating wire fence and threw him. He also became entangled in the same but floated down to a bunch of willows and was rescued.

Henry Amidon has lost the sight of his eye entirely. He and Dr. Caldwell went to Chicago to see Dr. Holmes, but nothing of benefit could be done for him.

John Herscher is running the hotel now; Mr. Raabe has moved out; could not make it pay, he said.

Zion's Outreach in Mission

Early in the history of Zion, the congregation reached out to assist other Lutherans li-sing in the area through their pastor, Rev. Seehausen. That happened in the Milks Grove Township to the west of Chebanse. The Chebanse Herald reported in May of 1899 that a petition to construct a church was circulated in the Milks Grove area for the German Lutherans. Thus in September of 1899, 5 acres was given to the church by Henry Siedentop, the grandfather of Art Schultz, located 8 miles west and three miles south of Chebanse for the construction of a house of worship for them. Prior to that, the German and Danish Lutherans had met as early as the 1880's in the town hall at Milk's Grove. According to reports and the records of confirmations, Rev. Seehausen served that congregation for the greater part of his ministry at Zion Lutheran Church, Chebanse. Services were held on Sunday afternoons. When the weather was bad, Pastor Seehausen would make the trip on Saturday afternoon with horse and buggy, stay with the Henry Siemring family who lived about 7 miles west of Chebanse and then return later Sunday or early Monday morning. And so God's Holy Word and the Sacraments were brought to the people west of Chebanse by Pastor Seehausen. Confirmation certificates of relatives of Art Schultz of Zion, Chebanse, indicate Pastor Seehausen was serving the Milk's Grove Lutheran Church as late as 1917. Since in 1909, Trinity Lutheran Church, Herscher, was founded as a daughter congregation of Zion Lutheran Church, Bonfield, some of the members of Milk's Grove Lutheran Church transferred to Trinity and others eventually to Zion Lutheran Church, Chebanse. One article in an early Chebanse Herald indicates that the Milk's Grove Lutheran Church was named "Zion." (Our thanks to Mrs. Hattie Giertz and the Art Schultz family for providing information about the Milk's Grove Zion Lutheran Church.)

In the late 1940's, another opportunity arose for Zion to reach out to a neighboring community. During the pastorate of Rev. Walter Winter, a survey was made of the Otto Community, since it was noticed that a number of black children were attending the schools of the area. That survey encouraged the founding of Our Savior Lutheran Church at Otto. On November 2, 1947, a meeting was held following the first worship service for the Otto residents at the District 128 Porter Schoolhouse. On November 9, 1947, a meeting was held following the worship service, at which time officers were elected and the congregation was organized. Mr. Theodore Espy was elected as Chairman, Mrs. Cherry Winbush, Secretary and Mrs. Ulysses Burrell, Treasurer. After the first two meetings at the Porter School, the group met at the Espy home for services until the summer of 1950, when construction began on a concrete block church on the east side of the Illinois Central railroad to the north of Otto. However, due to the construction of the interstate highway, that project was halted, and the highway department of the State of Illinois compensated the group $1,000 so they could relocate. About a year later, a parcel of land about 1/4 miles west of the Illinois Central railroad was purchased from a member of the congregation, Mrs. Spivy. The Porter School building was purchased for $250, and moved to the new location for $250. Renovation of the building was done to make it suitable for worship by the summer of 1952. The congregational historian reported "After about four years of faithful service to the mission, Pastor Winter, who had served as an inspiration and a guiding light to the little group during it's first years, was forced to give up the work because of a throat ailment which was gradually taking his voice." Following that, pastors of neighboring congregations from Kankakee, Momence, and other communities served the congregaton. Services were held at 1:00 on Sunday afternoons. Pastors from Zion Lutheran Chebanse continued to serve Our Savior Lutheran Church. During pastoral vacancies at Zion, pastors from Trinity Lutheran Church, Herscher served the small group. Due to declining membership and the inability of the congregation to attract the membership of the Otto community, the church closed it's doors on Sept. 29, 1988. It served the needs of the black community with a Lutheran voice in Otto for about 40 years. The proceeds of the sale of the property ($2,419.66) was sent to the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod Northern Illinois District and designated for the "Black Ministry Scholarship Fund." Throughout its history, Our Savior Lutheran Church confirmed 37 people, baptized 28 persons, received three members by transfer, married three couples and conducted 14 funerals. the church nearly doubled its membership and strength. A parsonage was built opposite the church in 1903 at a cost of $5,200, including land, the old one being removed to the rear of the church for a janitor's residence.

A school has been sustained in connection with the church for thirty-five years, though of late only in the summer as a "vacation school," with an average attendance of seventy-five. The present value of the church property is $10,000, including the land on which the church is built which is fifty by one hundred feet, the parsonage and the janitor's house. Total num-ber of families one hundred and twenty, com-munications three hundred.

The present pastor is Rev. Mr. Umbeck.

SEVENTH DAY ADVENTISTS.

This sect was organized in Kankakee about thirty years ago by Elders D. F. Boudreau and B. F. Andrews. Members observe the seventh day of the week instead of the f irst like the old Isrlites, and especially emphasize the doc-trine of the second coming of the Christ. They have no pastors, aside from local elders, who are elected annually. The present membership is fifty-eight; Sabbath school twenty-two. The neat little church, which is fairly well occupied at the service every Saturday morning, is lo-cated at the northeast corner of Dearborn ave-nue and Oak street. Its value is estimated at $4,000.

THE CHRISTADELPHIANS.

This small society, now thirty-six years old, was organized in 1869, with Messrs. F. Chester, .and R. A. Lain as first off icers. The present membership is about twenty. They have no definite place of worship, but have met from house to Louse, and for the past five years at the home of W. F. Pottenger. Their tenets, as ennunciated in the publications of the sect, do not materially differ in essentials from those of Christians in general, e ither as to faith or practice.

CHRISTIAN CHURCH.

But one congregation of this denomination exists in the county, the "Central Christian" of the city of Kankakee. This was organized De-cember 13, 1896, with the following trustees: G. W. Harvey, chairman; R. B. Green, A. D.

Dwight and John B. Darrah. The first pastor was Rev. D. F. Syster, who, in April, 1897, was followed by Rev. W. D. Deweese until July, 1901. Rev. R. E. Thomas officiated until July, 1905, when the present pastor, Rev. M. G. O'Brien, took charge of the congregation.

Until the autumn of 1899 this church was without a house of worship. In the spring of that year the old St. Paul's Episcopal church was bought and moved from the corner of Schuyler avnue and Merchant street to a lot on Oak street, near the corner of Rosewood avenue, which had been purchased for this pur-pose. It proved an admirable investment, giv-ing a building seating about three hundred at a cost of only $1,500, including expenses for re-moval and renovating. In December, 1902, a parsonage was bought at 355 Greenwood avenue for $2,800. The total value of the church prop-erty is about $5,000, with an indebtedness of $2,500. The total expenditures for all purposes for the year ending July 1, 1905, was $1,150. The total membership of the church at present is two hundred and twenty - four . Sunday school membership, two hundred and forty, with an average attendance for the year end-ing September 1, 1905, of one hundred and twelve. The church is in an encouraging con-.dition, with large congregations for so small a membership. Few Christian bodies in the county, if any, can show a better record dur-ing an existence of less than nine years.

YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION.

The Young Men's Christian Association, of Kankakee, was organized June 20, 1894. At a meeting of the young men of Kankakee, the following preamble was adopted: "We the sub-scribers desirous of the spiritual, intellectual, social and physical welfare of the young men of Kankakee, and impressed with the import. ante of consecrated effort, to this end do hereby form an association therefor and adopt for the government the following constitution." There were present at this meeting: Dr. H. H. Rog-ers, H. H. Troup, C. E. Holt, Dr. G. M. Phelps, J. W. Zink, Frank Mateer, Edward Mayette, David Nichols, D. C. Umbach, Seneca Burchard, John Grouenewoud, J. George Knecht, Albert Umbach, C. J. Linden, N. L. Richmond, Will C. Schneider and Asst. State Secy. A. M. Bra-

ner. The organization was the direct result of a number of men's meetings held under the auspices of the state Y. M. C. A. A number of conversions were recorded at these meetings. At a subsequent meeting the following names were appended to the const i tut ion: H. H. Troup , H. H. Rogers , F. C. Mateer , A . H. Umbach, J. George Knecht, John Groenewoud, D. D. Nichols, G. M. Phelps, D. C. Umbach, J. W. Zink, W. C. Schneider, C. J. Linden, A. M. Brobst, C. E. Holt, S. B. Burchard, D. W. Christian, Edward Mayette, H. M. Stone and W. R. Breckenridge. The association selected as its board of directors D. W. Christian, Ed-ward Mayette, W. C. Schneider, H. M. Stone, C. E. Holt, H. H. Troup, S. B. Burchard, W. R. Breckenridge, C. J. Linden, . H. H. Rogers and Albert Umbach. They in turn elected H. H. Rogers, president; C. E. Holt, v ice presi-dent; W. C. Schneider , secre tary , and M. Stone, treasurer. These men were all promin-ent in the business life of the city, and to them was intrusted the management of all the affairs of the association, as well as any, properties which might accrue. They at once recognized the need of an executive officer and called Mr. A. T. Stevens to the position, who accepted and thus became the first general secretary of the association. In looking around for a permanent location the furniture and equip-ment of the "Columbian Club" a social organ-ization, was offered for sale, and was pur-chased by the association and the lease of the quarters they were then occupying was as-sumed. These were located in what was then known as the Swannell building, at 226 Court street.

The enterprise naturally grew in favor and influence with the young men of the commu-nity and its membership has gradually grown until now it has three hundred and seventy-five, with a standing recognized by all classes as second to none in its influence over the morals of the young men and boys, and on a par with the schools and churches of the city for building up manhood. The association moved into its present quarters on the second and third floors of the Babst building, at 221 Court street, in 1898. These rooms were especially arranged for the use of the association by Mr. Babst while erecting the building, and have answered its purposes splendidly until the last few years, when the increased membership, and added op-portunities for helping the young men, have grown to such an extent that a

home 9f its own, with modern equipment, is much needed. Th4e scope of work now being undertaken

by the association for the young men of the city covers much ground. There are four main avenues of activity, namely: religious, social, physical and educational. All of these are reaching out through various committees and influencing almost every young man of the community in one way or another. The fol-lowing prominent men have been its presi-dents: H. H. Rogers, C. E. Holt, H. H. Troup, G. M. Phelps, E. B. Gower, E. D. Caulkins, and Dr. A. S. Eshbaugh. The general secre-taries who have succeeded Mr. Stevens have been J. S. Cline, J. P. Bailey, L. F. Martin and J. M. Davis. The following are its present off icers and

board of directors: Dr. A. S. Eshbaugh, presi-dent; George W. Eastburn, vice president; B. B. Ferris, secretary; H. M. Stone, treasurer; W. C. Schneider, W. R. Breckenridge, Dr. C. C. Crampton, E. D. Caulkins, Chas. Wertz, Homer Elliott, Dr. A. C. Willman and E. B. Gower. The executive off icers are: J. M. Davis, gen-eral secretary, .Frank E. Birch, physical di-rector, and Dr. T. E. Foster, medical examiner. The total attendance at the rooms last year

was 35,625, an average daily attendance of 97. The total receipts from January, 1904, to Jan-uary, 1905, from membership dues, subscrip-tions, entertainments, collections at meetings and various other sources was 3,551.00. An entertainment course has been maintained for the past seven years. It consists of six or seven numbers, and includes lectures and musicals, and being the only course of its kind in the city is largely appreciated. While the object of the course primar ily is for educat ion and amusement, the expenses have always been met, and for the last few years a net profit has been realized.

The s t a t e o f I l l i n o i s was admi t t ed i n t o t h e union as a sovereign state on the th ird day of September, 1818. On that date congress enacted a law donating to the state of Il l inois, two con- gressional townships for a seminary , and also one sect ion of land in each congressional town-ship of s i x mi le s square; set t ing apar t speci f i -ca l l y f o r t h i s pur po se s ec t i on n um ber e d s i x -t een . It is to be regretted that some provision was

not made to guard more closely the sale of these school lands, as the larger portion of the lands were sold at a very low price. This will

account for the difference in the amount of the permanent school funds in the different town-ships as hereinafter noted.

TOWNSHIP SCHOOLS.

L ike all the early schools of the west, the f irst schools of Kankakee county were sub-scription schools. The first school was taught in 1836, by Miss Stella Ann Johnson; in Aroma Township, and the second in 1837, in Momence, by Miss Loraine Beebe. The fol lowing account of the Schools of the

various townships of the county giv es as far as poss ibl e t he ear ly h i st or y and the pr esent status of the township schools.

MOMENCE - 1880

Taken from the Kankakee Gazette, April 29, 1880.

Mrs. Eagle is very sick with some kind of fever. On Monday Dr. Knot was called to consult with Dr. Shronts in the case. He came again yesterday.

Mitchel Cantway, of Momence, and N. Stansbury, of Waldron, ran a five-mile foot race the other day, Cantway winning in 28 minutes.

Ed Chipman has been drawn as a United States juror.

John Casper went to Grant Park on horseback for Dr. Wheeler. On his return while near Royal Cutler's residence he had a fit, fell from his horse face down in some water in the road, and was drowned before discovered by Mr. Haines. Mr. Casper was subject to fits.

H. K. Wheeler last week made a purchase of the 120 acres left of the Perry Stratton farm on Section 18 in Yellowhead. Harris Wheeler bought some time ago 160 acres of the same farm. The whole purchase amounted to the sum of $7,450. This is good land and is situated about a mile north of Grant Park.
