With regard to resuming public Masses in our parishes, the Diocese of Sioux City has based and will continue to base decisions on scientific data and reliable projections. There is a num- ber of criteria the Diocese is waiting to be met before it is deemed safe and responsible to open up churches again. This includes the downward trajectory of new COVID-19 cases reported within a 14-day period, the downward trajecto- ry of hospital bed, intensive care, and ventilator usage, and the downward trajectory of daily death reports. In addition to these things, it is necessary to have adequate contact-tracing and a robust testing program. Achieving these con- ditions will indicate that it is reasonably safe to resume, with precautions, the public celebra- tion of the Mass." -Bishop Nickless

Over the next 2 years, more specific tracks will be added that anyone can take if they’re interested in them (i.e. Parent Ministry - for any parent that wants to learn more about the faith and teach it to their chil-dren, Hispanic Ministry, Music Ministry, Franciscan Spirituality, etc.). Each course is one hour and you can complete it on your own timeline.

Initial Considerations (TO RESUME THE PUBLIC CELEBRATION OF MASS) *No Date set at this time! Dispensation. All the faithful ar e to be r eminded that the obligation to attend Sunday Mass

is still dispensed. The elderly and more vulnerable/high risk parishioners should be reminded that because of this, it is not a mortal sin to miss Sunday Mass, even though it is being offered, and that it is preferable that they remain home at this time.

Unified Approach. To reduce the r isks associated with people migrating from one par ish to another, the entire diocese will follow the same protocols and all parishes will be treated as a whole with reference to opening churches, allowing public Masses and the distribution of the Eucharist. When the time comes, the entire diocese will open up together, but until then, all par-ishes will remain closed together.

Protocols. The instructions and preparations r equir ed for r esuming public Masses are not

optional. Pastors are strongly encouraged to utilize their pastoral councils and other groups in

the planning and preparations for recommencing with public Masses. Because of the social

strife that has occurred in stores and restaurants due to the lack of cooperation on the part of

some individuals, pastors need to address the need for goodwill and understanding when public

worship is resumed. The four Iowa dioceses have reiterated that if there is a lack of compliance,

Masses will be cancelled for the health safety of all.

Also, this month we are pleased to announce the release of six new workshops for you to enjoy:

Intercultural Ministry with Youth

The Evangelizing Classroom

Giving Counsel and Pastoral Care

Introducing the Liturgy to Children

To all SM Parishioners:

The tree committee has met and has come up with a 5-10 year plan for removing the ash trees (before the ash bore comes) and other trees as needed (rotting or too many limbs breaking) and then planting a variety of new trees. The committee met with Raman Tree Service and makes the recommendation that we cut all of the men-tioned trees down and trim the other trees mentioned this spring so that we can start planting some new trees later this year. The parish council has approved going ahead with this recommendation.

Raman’s will cut down the 7 outside trees by the roads around Father’s house and trim the 2 big maples by the church and school. They will also cut down the inside trees by Father’s house that we have marked(except the 4 small trees that we can remove), clean up debris and remove all stumps for $7000.00. They will also trim the tree by the playground with limbs hanging over the road and trim the trees behind the school building for no ad-ditional fee.

Before going ahead with this project, we would like input from the parish. You may call or email the office with any questions or concerns. You may also call anyone on the tree committee with questions – Shorty Blauwet, Mark Roemen, Deb Blauwet & Father Francis.

Congratulations to Marvin & Mary Roemen who celebrated 65 years of marriage on May 14!

Holy Name & St. Mary

As Central Lyon School & West Lyon School is closed until further notice, there is no CCD at Holy Name & St. Mary's until further notice. Please look in the bulletin, at group text messages and on the Youth Group Facebook page for any updates.

My brothers and sisters, recently we forwarded to you the Iowa Bishops' statement about the suspension of Masses. This was in reference to the governor's statement on the reopening of churches in our state. Our Bishops and the Iowa task force on COVID-19 which the Bishops set up, agreed that it is not prudent to start reopening before preparing ourselves for it. They decided that we need to slow down and make sure we all know what needs to be done to make sure that every life is protected. The Bishops know that it is everyone's desire that we go back to church, but for the greater good, we are being asked to wait until all things are in place. That task force will come up with detailed guidelines which we will discuss with groups like the ushers and Eucharistic ministers among others. When this is done and the bishop's are sure that we are ready, they will reopen the churches for Mass.

In the meantime, let us continue to pray in our home as a family. St Paul tells us that 'everything works for the good for those who trust in the Lord.' May we see the good that God wants us to get from this experience.

-Fr. Francis
