Take the Sunday School teacher who asked a child in her class, Johnny, do you think Noah did a lot of fishing when he was on the ark?” “No,” replied Johnny, “How could he with just two worms.” Or consider the case of the Sunday School teacher who said to her class one day, “We have been learning how powerful kings and queens were in Bible times. But there is a Higher Power. Can anybody tell me what it is?” One child blurted out, “Aces!” It was with no surprise then that I can across one day a Madonna and Child by Rogier van der Weyden (c. 1450) that gets to the heart of a matter: High above the Virgin Mary’s head an angel floats looking on adoringly. Mary holds the toddler Jesus in her lap looking on. One hand holds him secure and the other keeps an object from falling off her lap. That object is a book. Upon further inspection one sees that it is an Old Testament. And then you see what the child Jesus is doing: tearing out the pages of the Old Testament! And his Mother looks on approvingly! What is the message? In the child Jesus everything you needed the Old Testament for to find out about God is now found in Him! When you see Him – you see God! That is the message of the Apostle in Philippians 2:6: who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited…” Paul uses two words in this one short verse that are critical to our understanding of this child Jesus tearing pages out of an Old Testa- ment. The first is ‘who’ here or in some versions ‘being.’ It is not the common word for being, instead it points to the every essence of a thing. It is similar in thought to the word Paul uses for form, morphe in the Original Language. That word stresses the essential form which never alters. So the whole idea behind these words is this: Jesus was essentially God! When I cannot see or hear God very well in my life, God invites me to look at his son, Jesus. Dear Friends at SSUMC, Children never cease to amaze me! We can get to the heart of things with a child. Take the Sunday School teacher who asked a child in her class, “Johnny, do you think Noah did a lot of fishing when he was on the ark?” “No,” replied Johnny, “How could he with just two worms.” Or consider the case of the Sunday School teacher who said to her class one day, “We have been learning how powerful kings and queens were in Bible times. THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO STARBUCKS by Leonard Sweet is a book which catches your attention just by the title alone. He writes chapter after chapter comparing Starbucks and the church on the EPIC scale: E for Experiential, P for Participatory, I for Image and C for Connection. Sweet believes we should experience a spiritual life on this scale just as Starbucks has changed its company from its beginning. In the epilogue he traces the history of coffee from its discovery by the Chinese up to the present modern day coffee houses. This book is on the New Books table outside the church office. Check it out!

Ben Franklin’s epitaph for himself

The body of Benjamin Franklin, printer, like the cover of an old book, its contents torn out and stripped of its lettering and gilding, lies here,

food for worms. But the work shall not be lost; for it will, as he believed, appear once again in a

new and more elegant edition, revised and corrected by the author.

We are free at last … With the arrival of Jesus, the Messiah, that fateful dilemma is resolved. Those who enter into Christ's being-here-for-us no longer have to live under a continuous, low-lying black cloud. A new power is in operation. The Spirit of life in Christ, like a strong wind, has magnificently cleared the air, freeing you from a fated lifetime of brutal tyranny at the hands of sin and death … We are free at last.

New Pew Bibles

The Administrative Council voted to approve the staff recommenda-tion that we purchase new pew bi-bles for the sanctuary. We will be purchasing the NIV Bibles to re-

place those in the pews. The cost of the bibles is $10. If you would like

to purchase any of these in honor or memory of someone, please make

the check to SSUMC and put ‘new Bibles’ on the memo line. We will

place a bookplate in the front cover, so please include the name of the person honored/remembered and

the name of the donor.

Don’t forget about our “Spare Change Ministry” We are still collecting change to help with ministries to assist with those in need. You can

bring your change to the office and take back your box to

A watchful eye must be kept on ourselves lest, while we are building ideal monuments of renown and bliss here, we neglect to have our names enrolled in heaven. -James Madison

While we are zealously performing the duties of good citizens and soldiers, we certainly ought not to be inattentive to the higher duties of religion. To the distinguished character of

Patriot, it should be our highest glory to add the more distinguished character of Christian. -George Washington, from the General Orders of May 2, 1778

As to Jesus of Nazareth, my opinion of whom you particularly desire, I think the system of morals and His religion as He left them to us, the best the world ever saw or is likely to see. -Benjamin Franklin

John Adams, who became America’s second

president, was so elated when the United

States was about to celebrate independence

from England that he wrote: “It ought to be

commemorated as the day of deliverance, by

solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It

ought to be solemnized with pomp and

parade, with shows, games, sports, guns,

bells, bonfires and illuminations from one end

of this continent to the other, from this time

forward, forevermore.”

I am a Christian in the only sense in which He wished anyone to be: sincerely attached to His doctrines in preference to all others. - Thomas Jefferson

This is all the inheritance I can give to my

dear family. The religion of Christ can give

them one which will make them rich indeed

- Patrick Henry

In Their Own Words….
