Research Information Management SystemNUI Galway and the University of Limerick have recently awarded the Research InformationManagement System contract to Vidatum Technologies. This software system will support NUIGalway in meeting its own, and external needs, in the areas of research data management, reporting and dissemination, alongside open access to research publications. This will replace thecurrent RSS and remedy the current situation where it is clear that lack of integration betweenexisting systems or with external systems is a barrier to efficient and sustainable workflows, resulting in incomplete data, time-consuming reporting processes and loss of competitiveadvantage. Extensive engagement with Vidatum Technologies, NUI Galway academic and supportstaff will continue as we work through the installation process to ensure that the system meetsthe needs of those who will use it.

We are also intending to procure a grant management system that will process funding grantsfrom application stage all the way through to contract review/signoff and to research accountsetup. This system will also be integrated with the financial system and other internal systemincluding the research information management system.

School Research Profiles ProjectThe Institutional Research Office, in conjunction with the Research Office, are conducting abibliometric analysis of research outputs for each of NUI Galway's 16 Schools (i.e. all publicationoutputs and citation analysis) for the past 10 years. This project will be integrated with theongoing national citation project, which NUI Galway is engaged in, through the IUA, withThomson Reuters and the InCites tool.

Return of Research MattersThe first redesigned Research Matters magazine was published in April. The publication highlightsrecent achievements, upcoming events and ongoing research projects and profiles members ofthe research community. It is distributed to all staff, postgraduate students and targeted externalstakeholders. Three issues will be published in 2011 with plans to move to a quarterly release in2012. The magazine is produced by the Research Office with the assistance of an Editorial Boardmade up of academic and administrative staff members from a number of disciplines. To submitan item for inclusion in future issues, contact [email protected].

Staff ChangesMaria Nolan is working mornings to cover Joanne Bane’s maternity leave.Geraldine Fallon is working afternoons to cover Ann Ryan’s maternity leave.

5 Research Accounts

Have you seen the new Research Accounts Website?Hopefully the redesign will make locating and navigating through the information containedeasier than it was in the past. Our newly revamped FAQ should answer most of the questions aResearcher has.

Researcher Workshop SeriesWorkshops involving all the Research Support Services offices are being held. Details of theworkshops can be found on our News Section. If you would be interested inorganising one for your School/College/Research Centre please contact Orla [email protected].

College Induction for First Year Research PostgraduatesNew research students often have questions on what to do about getting their collegestudentship or external funding processed and what the process is, who to go to, where to get theappropriate forms signed, when are payments made etc. Research Accounting would be happy tobe involved in your College Induction if you wish and make a short presentation to your researchstudents on “Scholarships” for Researchers. Please contact Orla Timon if you wish to discussfurther.

Agresso Training for ResearchersWe now have a Video Tutorial for running reports on Agresso. Paul Cryan holds monthly hands ontraining for Researchers and will also hold sessions within Centres if that is the preferred option.Contact Paul by email [email protected]

8 PhD Successes

David Byrne was recently awarded second place for his poster presentation at the Institute ofStructural Engineers Young Researchers Conference held at the Institute’s headquarters inLondon. The conference, now in its 13th year, provides a platform for research students topresent their work and exchange ideas with their peers and industry leaders. David, a PhDstudent from Wicklow town, was presented with the award for his poster, entitled The analysis ofshear transfer in void formed flat slabs, including in-situ measurements from a building. David’sentry was shortlisted from over 60 abstracts submitted from PhD students throughout the UK andIreland, and was judged by a panel of selected members from the Institution. The principalinvestigator for this project is Dr Jamie Goggins, School of Engineering and Informatics at NUIGalway, and was co-supervised by NUI Galway’s Eamonn Cannon. The research project is co-funded by the Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology (IRCSET) and ArupConsulting Engineers under an Enterprise Partnership Scheme. It forms part of an initiative todevelop the new Engineering Building at NUI Galway as a ’living laboratory’ for engineering, where live data sets from numerous types of sensors will be used to illustrate structuralengineering and building performance concepts in undergraduate teaching and in thedevelopment of full-scale research in structural engineering and energy.

Natalie Haustrup, a PhD student at the National Centre for Laser Applications (NCLA), School ofPhysics was the winner of the Graduate Student Award for the paper submitted to the 2011 E-MRS Spring Meeting. Natalie presented her work on nanoparticle generation during laser ablationof thin metal films to the Symposium. Natalie’s PhD research is funded by an IRCSET embarkfellowship and is supervised by Dr. Gerard O’Connor in the School of Physics.

Saravanan Rengaraj, a PhD student in the Biomolecular Electronics Research Laboratory wasrecently awarded first prize in the poster competition during, “Eirelec’11: Electrochemistry theFuture?, an international meeting held in Adare Co. Limerick in May 2011.

9.2 Recent Outputs

The outputs below are taken from Scopus and ARAN (NUI Galway’s open access repository). Thisis a selection of publications for this period. Limitations from exporting publications from Scopushave arisen as they do not index all journal titles, however, the new Research Support System willallow for a more accurate reporting by months. Data will be migrated from the old RSS system tothe new system. Please Note: For this quarter publications are not taken from the Research Support System (RSS)as the new RSS system is currently been updated with information from the old RSS and byinformation from the school profiling project.
