Miscellaneous News

The Bakersfield Convention and Visitors is pleased to announce another

busy weekend for local hotels. Bakersfield will be hosting the Cali Finale, a

large cheerleading and dance championship to be held Friday through

Sunday at Rabobank Arena. In addition to the championships, the event

will also feature the largest spirit expo on the West Coast. Cali Finale will

be bringing cheerleaders, their families, and their coaches to Bakersfield

for the first time. A news release is attached.

TRIP Traffic Advisory

Coffee/Brimhall Roads

Motorists will encounter nighttime lane closures at the Coffee

Road/Brimhall Road intersection Friday, April 19, 2013, as City crews

work on roadway paving in this area. Alternating lanes will be

closed between the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., but at least one

lane in each direction will be open at all times while work is

underway. All lanes will reopen in time for the morning commute.

Allen Road

Motorists are advised to anticipate traffic delays on Allen Road,

between San Juan Avenue and Brimhall Road, on Monday and

Tuesday, April 22-23, 2013 to allow the contractor to complete work

on the Allen Road Bridge. There will be intermittent traffic delays in

place for both northbound and southbound lanes between the

hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Motorists can expect delays of up to five

minutes.

Spirit Championships Underway This Weekend

Cali Finale to Meet in Bakersfield For First Time

Bakersfield, Calif. – The Bakersfield Convention and Visitors Bureau is pleased to announce that the Golden

State Spirit Association and the Aloha Spirit Championships will host the Cali Finale for the first time in

Bakersfield this weekend at Rabobank Arena.

This cheerleading and dance championships will bring together teams from the North Region and South Region

to battle in two days of all-star cheer and dance competitions. Divisions level 1-6 will compete along with

school cheer and dance. Award ceremonies will take place throughout the weekend and don’t miss the awards

ceremony for the Western Region Scholarship Team - over $10,000 in scholarships awarded!

The Cali Finale Spirit Expo is the LARGEST Spirit Expo on the West Coast. Instructional classes for coaches,

parents, cheerleaders AND dancers will be offered throughout the weekend. Admission is $25 per person for

all attendees for the three days and tickets are sold the day of the event at the Theater Box Office.

The Cali Finale Spirit Expo will open Friday at noon and close Sunday at 5:00 PM. For a complete schedule of

ADMINISTRATION:

January Monthly Total Attendance: 64,373 (Includes all programs,

reservations and volunteers combined for the month.)

o Bright House Amphitheater: Parks is assisting PW in the modification of existing

seating to achieve more leg room. The project will take several weeks and

may be suspended from time to time for events.

o State Farm Sports Village Phase II – The project is complete and in

establishment period. Phase II opening

o Unimproved Median Island Study: Project is complete and in 1 year

maintenance period.

o Bicycle Transportation Plan – Adoption is scheduled for May 2013.

o Special Event Reservations:

o March 3rd – Beach Park, Club de Pervianos Soccer Tournament – 200

Guests.

o March 9th – KRP Trail, Brain Injury Association of California Walk/Run –

150 Guests.

o March 16th – Beach Park, WISH Project International Walk/Run – 400

AQUATICS:

o Total attendance for City aquatic programming is 11,530 which is a 2.7%

increase as compared to the same time last year of 11,229. The increase

was due to high school swim teams, swim meets and trainings.

McMurtrey Aquatic Center:

o Monthly attendance at the McMurtrey Aquatic Center was 7,786

compared to last year’s 7,082. This 9.9% growth was due to the

increase in attendance for the high school swim teams, swim meets,

Waterpark Lifeguard class and Water Safety Instructor class.

100 Mile Club:

o The 100 mile lap swim club is currently made up of 348 active

members. The club has swum a combined total of 113,853 miles.

One year ago the club had 284 active members and swum a total

of 95,117 miles!

Underwater EGGStravaganza:

o The Seventh Annual Underwater EGGStravganza was held at the

McMurtrey Aquatic Center on Saturday, March 23rd. Total

attendance for the event was 323, with 149 children participating in

the underwater egg hunt. Families enjoyed the opportunity to swim

and play on the waterslides following the egg hunt which included

approximately 5,000 eggs.

Training Courses:

o Three classes were conducted this month by our Aquatic Trainers.

On March 2nd all current lifeguards attended and passed the First Aid

for Public Safety Personnel certification. This new certification satisfies

Title 22 requirements. Major efforts to recruit new lifeguards these

past months helped boost attendance to 29 participants at both the

Waterpark Lifeguard class and Water Safety Instructor class.

Jefferson Pool:

o High school swim team attendance at Jefferson Pool for the month

of March totaled 1,356. Two high school swim meets were also

hosted this month.

Silver Creek Pool:

o High school swim team attendance at Silver Creek Pool for the

month of March totaled 1,950. There were also two swim meets at

the pool.

Make A Splash Program:

o The Make A Splash drowning prevention program provided Parent

CPR and First Aid Training to 3 adults with preschool aged children

this month. Staff also presented Water Safety Presentations to 438

children at 20 different schools. Staff also gave a presentation on

the Make A Splash program at the Kern County Network for

Children’s Collaborative meeting on March 21st.

Other Aquatics Highlights:

Some of the activities currently taking place at the McMurtrey Aquatic Center

Total Attendance: 11,530

ATHLETICS:

o Adult, Youth, Fitness and Adaptive Programs total attendance for the month of

March was 21,892. Monthly attendance decreased by 15% as compared to

same time last year due to adult softball game rainouts; games will be made up

during the month of April.

Adaptive Programming:

o Adaptive softball games started on Thursday, March 21st at Beach

Park and Wayside Park for the six week spring league.

o Six teams from local adult day programs play each week in this

modified softball league.

Athletic Programming:

Adult Softball

Spring Softball started their ten week league on March 11th.

The Spring Adult Softball League has 172 teams registered- 108 Men’s and 64 Coed.

To accommodate the 87 softball games a week (172 teams), Mesa Marin’s 4 fields

are used 5 nights per week, Beach five nights per week, and Wayside is used four

nights a week.

Connor’s Concession reported earning $7,305.52 in sales at the Mesa Marin Sports

Complex.

Softball Tournaments

The Kern High School District All Area Girls’ Softball Tournament was held on March

15th & 16th. Sixteen teams participated in the tournament.

Second Annual “Quality of Life” Presentation & St. Patrick’s Day 5K Run/Walk

The City and CSUB joined forces again this year to improve the quality of life in

Bakersfield by partnering to present a lecture on “Five Science-Based Strategies to

Make You Happier”. The lecture was given by Steve Bacon, Ph.D. CSUB Faculty

Member on Thursday, March 14th.

In conjunction with this presentation, a St. Patrick’s Day 5K Run/Walk was held on

Saturday, March 16th at The Park at River Walk. There were 314 people participated

in the run.

o Volunteer/Donation Total: $1,056.00

o Overall attendance for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center was 4,132.

Attendance was up 21% from last March. The increase was due to our spring

break camp and egg hunt held in March rather than April.

Springtime Egg Hunt

o The springtime Egg Hunt was held in conjunction with Stay Focused Ministries Spring Break

Event. Over 2,000 participants attended and over 5,000 stuffed eggs were given away!

Stay focused Ministries served over 1,500 meals during the event. Giveaways by Bike

Bakersfield and Stay Focused Ministries were given away.

Spring Camp

o Spring Camp was a success with over 30 children per day in attendance. Campers were

fed daily and also participated in several activities.

o Volunteer/Donation Total: $1,360


SILVER CREEK COMMUNITY CENTER/SAUNDERS MULTI-USE FACILITY:

Silver Creek Community Center

Total attendance for Silver Creek Community Center was 479, compared to 856 in

2012. There were no rentals for Silver Creek Community Center in March.

After School Fun

Attendance: Weekly Average: 11 Monthly: 176

Saunders Recreational Facility

o Total overall attendance for the Saunders Recreational Facility was 1548 as compared

to last year of 1250. There were a total of three (3) rentals for the Saunders

Recreational Facility.

Patriots Park

o Parking stalls in all three parking lots were repainted by signs & markings.

o On March 1st, Streets department closed off the breeze way to Pin Oak Blvd from

Landover Lane.

Arbor Day – Union Avenue & Kentucky

o Trees were planted on the sides of the Union overpass. There were a total of eight (8)

volunteers to assure proper planting of ten (10) 15 gallon trees. The varieties of trees

planted were Crape Myrtles and Chinese Pistache.

Aera Park

o Tree staff installed new flags at the entrance and South/East corner of Aera Park

baseball diamonds.

Linnell & Brahama

o Tree staff removed all tumbleweeds and trash at the future park site.

WALL REPAIRS

1. Bids were awarded for seven wall damage locations on March 15th. The locations

awarded to Tony Cole were as follows:

Buena Vista @ Soltierra $1,545.00

STREETS DIVISION – WORK SCHEDULE

Week of April 22, 2013 – April 26, 2013 Resurfacing/Reconstructing streets in the following areas: Reconstructing various streets in the area east of Buck Owens Blvd. and north of Select Ave Resurfacing streets in the area south of Panama Ln and east of Akers Rd for resurfacing Sealing streets in the area west of River Blvd and south of Panorama Miscellaneous Streets Division projects:

Construction of spray pad at Siemon Park Video inspection of City owned Sewer & Storm lines to evaluate condition of pipes Miscellaneous concrete repairs throughout the city Installing handicap ramps on MLK Blvd between E California & E Brundage, Beale Ave between Monterey and Bernard St and Panama Ln between So. “H” St & Monitor prior to CIP project Testing an asphalt product that is 100% recycled material to resurface Elm St between 21st St & 19th St, the work will be done on 4/19/13 & 4/23/13. Crews will be preparing the street prior to the work being done. This work will be done at no cost to the city and staff will monitor and evaluate this process over the next few years NOTE: If raining, there will be no street sweeping service and all street cleaning personnel will be assigned to cleaning plugged drains and part circle culverts. This also applies when a large number of street sweeper are in Fleet for repairs. Areas that have been missed during this time will be swept at the end of the month.
