In fields where pre-treatment SOIl samples indicatd tho, presence or high population levels 01 nematodes, a successful fumigaUon cannol be expected to BlCIdicate entire poputations. Therefore, post·lrealmerit sampling is recommended to determine lhe need for additional pest management practices. •

Consult State Agriculluraf Experiment Station or Extension Sel'V;ca speciaTisls fot Information on other practices such as post-harvest deslruction of crop residues. weed oontror or other cultural practices. and USB of nematode resistant crop varieties l~t may aid In reducing crop losses from SOIl 00r00 pests.

GENERAL USE PRECAUTIONS

Soil fumigation using this product should be conducted only according to direction:; and conditions of use described in this labeling.

FORMULATOR USE OF 1.3-D1CHlOROPROPENE: labeling for end use products containing l.3-d"lChloropropene that are prepared and sold by formulators must comply with all precautionary statements, use precautions, environmental hazards. handling and proteclive equipment requIrements. maximum application rat~ and other exposure mitigalion measures specified in this product labeling.

RECONTAMINATION PREVENTION:· This product will control pests that are present In the soil treabnent zone at time of fumigation. It WIll not control pests that ara introduced Into soil 'aner fumigation. To avoid reinrcslation of treatlXi SOIl do rot use Irrigation waler, transplants. seed pieces, 01' equipment that could carry soil bome pests from infested land. Avoid contamination from moving infeslcx:l soil onto treated beds throU9h cultivation, movement of soll from below the treated zone. dumping contaminated tare soil in treated fields and soil contamina6on from equipment or crop remains. Clean equipment careluUy before entering treated fields.

BULK TRANSFERS: Dry break or dry disconnect couplings are required for atl producl transfers involving bulk containers for 1,3-d"tehloropropene as of September 30, 1993.

Do not use conlainer.s. pumps or olher l.r.ln:!.fer equipment made of aluminum, magnesium or their alloys. as under certain conditions 1,3-dichloropropene may be severely COfTOS.lve 10 such metal.s.

EQUIPMENT CLEAN-UP: Because 1,3-dichloropropene: Is COlTOsiva under certain conditions, flush all application equipment with fuel oil, kerosene or a similar type or pelroleum solvent immediately after use. Fil! pumps end meters with new motor 0;1 0( a 50% motor oiVruel oil mixture before storing. 00 not usc water. Dispose or rinsale by incOlfX'ration into field just lrealed or by other approved means. Never introduce rinsate or unused product into surface or underground water suppITes.

CHEMIGATlON: Do not apply 1.3-dichloropropene through any type ofinigation system.

FERTILITY INTERACTIONS: Fumigation may temporarily raise the level of ammonIa nitrogen and soluble salts in the SOIl. This 15 mast Jilcely to occur when heavy rates of fertilizer and fumigant are applied Ie soils thai are either cold, wet, acid, or high In organic matter. To avoid injury to certain crops including red bools, carrol$, com, radishes. cola crops, legumes (beans), lettuce. onions, and sugar beets, fertiUze as Indicated by soil tests made after fumigation.

To avoid ammonia irljury or nitrate starvation {or both) to crops grown on hIgh organic soils. do not use fertilizers containing ammonium salts. Use only fertilizers containing nnrates until alter the crop Is weD established and the soil lempe~lure is above 65 degrees F.

In mineraI soils, do not apply mora than 213 of the nitrogen requirements from fertilizers containing ammonium sal1$ until the crop ts well estahnshed end the soli temperature Is above 65 degreE.s F.

When using high rates of the product as required by certain slale nursery regulations, liming of highly acid s0l1s before fumigation may stimulate nitrification and reduce the possibility of ammonia toxicity. Certain nursery crops such as cilrus seedlings. Comus sp.. Cratsegus sp., spruce. and vegetable crops such as caulifiower have shov.n evidence of phosphorus deficiency rollowing fumIgation. To avoid this possible effect, It Is suggested thai additional phosphate ferbTlZer (foliar appflC-d) is recommended where experience indicates a derlCiency may occur_

APPLICATION DIRECTIONS APPUCATION TIMING: ThIs. product can be applied at any tima of th6 year when soil conditions permit Conditions that allow rapid diffusloll of the fumigant as a gas through the soil noona!y give best results. Because this product does not provide resldoal control of soil pests, II should be used as a preplant appflCalion before p!anting each crop. The following soiltempernture -and moisture conditions 'Should exist at time of treatment. Failure to meet these conditions may ~esult in unsatisfactory product per!onnance:

SOIL CONDlnONS: Soil !empera!!!rR at the depth of apprlCalion must be between 40 degrees F and 80 degrees F. In areas where the soil temperature in the sprirlg may not reach 40 degrees Fin. time 10 anew application of this product prior to planting, late summer or early fan treatment Is recommended. Soil mojsblrn throughout the destre-d treatment zone should be: at 01'" near the permanent v.ilting point to allow optimum dispersion of the fumIgant, which moves as a gas through the soil air spaces. The permanent WIlting point varies with SOIl lexlure and organTc matter collient. Coarser texlured soDs can be fumigaled under conditions of higher soil mol.slure than finer textured soils: however, it the SOIl mol.slure Is \00 high, fumigant movement will be retarded and effectiveness or the lrealment will be reduced. Previous and/or local experience with !he :soi to be treated or the crop to be planted can often servs as a guJde to conditions that will be acceptable. If you do not know how to detel1nk"le the sol moistUre content of lhe area 10 be treated. consult YOlJ( local extension sesvice. or soil conservation service specialist or pest conlrol advisor {ag consultant) for assistance.

In general, no irrigation should immediately pl""eceda subsoiling or fumIgation: however, when surface SOIl moisture conditions are not likely to provide an adequate seal against fumigant loss, a very light sprinkler irrigatiOn-to wet the top 1 to 21l1Ches of soil may be useful.·

SOil PREPARATION: The SOI1 should be free of dods.· Large clods can prevent effective son sealing and reduce errectiveness of U,is product Plant residues should be thoroughly Incorporated Into the soil prior 10 Ireatmenl to . avoid inlerfering with application. Undecomposed plant material may harbor Pests that wiD not be controlled by fumIgation. Liltle or no crop residue should be present on the ~1 ~urface. Crop residue thaI is present should lie fiat to pennit the soil 10 be sealed errectively. Compacted sot! layers within the desired treatment zone should be fraclurcd before Or during application of ths -fumigant OCViatioll f~om the above conditions may result in unsatisfactory results.

PLA.CEMENT OF FUMIGANT: This product may be applied as either a broadcast (overa!!) or row treatment. II must be placed at least 10 inches below the final ~1 sLrlace. When s0!1 conditions anow. placement a minimum of 12 nclles betcw the final s0!1 surface is recommended. Deeper placement is recommended when fumIgating soil to be planted 10 deep-rooted plants. such as perennial rruit and nut crops, or to control deeply dis-tribuled pests.

APPLICATION METHODS AND EQUIPMENT BROADcAST APPLICATION: Use chisel (shank). Noble (sweep) pION orplow·sole application equipment. For best results when using chIsel equipment, use ripper-type. fO/Ward-swept shanks. Noble plow equipment is par1icuIarly userut for faU fumigation when the soil still contains some standing undecomposed plant material. Subsomng may bel necessary before application 8S described under -Soil Preparalion·~ Choose applkaUon equipment which allows the deepest aPP.ftCalion and best soil seal under existIng conditions.

The fumigant outlet spacing vanes with the type of appflC:ation equipment used. Wi!h chjsel flmiprnent a fumigant shank spacing of 12 to 24 inches is recommended. The outlet spacing for this equipment may be up to 1 112 times the appfation depth bul generally should be equal 10 the application depth and should not exceed the soil-shatlering capabilily of the chisels. The maximum ouIIel spacing should not exceed 24 inches. Wj!b plow'3n!e Nl!!ipmenl a 12·inch outlel spacIng is recommended. Do not exceed an outlel spadng of 18 inches. Wjth Noble ':sweeP) plow eq!!ipmen! use all out1~t spacing or 9-12 Inches along the- sweeps.

Broadcast apprlCaUon can be made in Ihe same direction or at an angllJ to the dirccron of row planting.. •

ROW APPttCATION: Use- chisel equlpmenl to treat a band or soil whem the crop Is to be planted, I.e. the plallt row. One or two chise!s per plant roN Is recommended. In general. when one chisel Is used, apply product at tha now rales given. When two chisels per plant raw are used, space tho chisels (fumigant oulIets) 8 to 12 inches apart and divide the flow rates equally betweell the two outlets. Regardless of the number of chisels used, !he: amount of fumigant applied per 1000 feet of plant row should remain the same. With certain deeper rooloo crops such as potaloes and sugar beels, higher f\O"N rales may be necessary to ensure adDqUate treatment of the zone of soil where primary root growth occurs: however, in no case should tho amount of fumrgant appUod per acre- excoed tho gallons pot acre- rollos. for broadcast treatment

APPLICATION METHODS AND EQUIPMEN:r (Con6nuod):

To prevent seed gcrminalion problems cauSed by Improper seed-lo-soU contact or Improper seeding depth, 40 not place !he seed directly ever the furrow left by the applicator chisel(s). 'YVhen one chisel is u5tld per ptant row, place the seQCi about 4 inches 10 one side of !he chisel furrow. \Nhen two chisels are usod per planl row, plant the seed offset from the chisel trace.

SEALING THE SOIL AFTER APPUCATIOH: lmmedialely after chisel application oIlIle product, the soij should be ·sealed"" Ie prevent fumiganlloss and ensure Ulat an effeclNe concentration of rumigant is maintained wiUlin the soli for a perlod of several days.

for BroadCas.1 Trealmeo! fOa! f"m1ga!ionl. sealtng can be accomplishe<fwith equipment lhat will .uniformly mix the soil to a depth of 3 to 4 inches to efrecwely eliminate chisel 01"" plow !races which can allow dIrect e.s.cape of the fumigant A tandem disc or slmaar equipment may be used for this purpose. To maxim1z.e .sealing, steps should also be laken 10 compacllhe soil surface to further retard the rate of fumigant foss by fallowing with a ring roner, cultipackcr or roner in combination with tillage equipment Compaction or the sail $urface alone may give the appearance of adequate sealing without effectively disrupling chisel or plow !.races.

For Row Trea1ment forming the beds at the time of application :s.hould be accomplished in a manner thai places the fumigant alleasl12 inches from the nearest son'air inler\'ace. TIle closest soVair interface could be the furrow for multiple knife appflCalions or L'"Ie top of the bed for- single knife applications.. Row treatments into preformed beds should be sealed by disrupting the chisel trace using press sealers, ring rollers or by reforming !he beds and foUewing with such equipment - -

Sealing can also be improved by applying non-perforated plastic lilm. suc.h as polyethylene. over the entire area or in strips. Use of a film to seal the soil surface docs not eliminate the need 10 eliminate chisel traces prior 10 application af the plastic film unit::!:ss simultaneous appficalian and tarp layjng by the same pIece of equipment occurs and !he tarp is a minimum of 1 mil thick.

Proper soil conditions at the time of appRcation (see Soil Preparation section) are Important to ensure proper placement of rumigant (see Placement of Fumigant section) and to obtain adequate sealing. Prior tillage ~1Jld be a~le to e6minate clods and thoroughly mIx crop residues inlo the 50011.

SOIL FUMIGATION INTERVAL: leave the sQllundislurbed an? unplanled for at least 7 days aOer application 01 the fumigant A longer undis:urbed interval Is required if the soil becomes cold or wet,. and for de.eIHOOted tree. shrub and vine plantlrl9 sites.

After tI10 rumigaoon interval. to prevent phytotoxicity, anew the fumigant to dissipate completely before planting the crop. Under optimum so! conditions for dissipation. 1 week fpr each 10 gallons/acre is recommended. For Fruil nut and nursery crops at least three months should elapse between treatmcnt and planting. To hasten dissipalion.. espcciaDy if heavy rains or !ow temperatures cccur during the [realmcnt period. till the sci! 10 the depth of fumigant application. Use a knife-ike chisel without turning the soil 10 reduce the possibl1ily of recontaminaling \he trealed soi. Oissipalion is usually complete when Ihe odor of the product is no lcoger evident at the application depth. Seed may be used as a bfoassay 10 determine if the product is present jn the 50011 at concentrations sufficient to cause plant injury. Do not planl if the odor of the product is present within the zona of fumigation.
