Staff positions are hourly (except Director). Funding is based on previous year’s numbers and

student performance.

Goal: To assist adults in becoming literate and obtaining the knowledge and skills necessary for employment and self-sufficiency, assist adults who are parents to obtain the educational skills necessary for them to become full partners in the educational development of their children, and assist adults in the completion of a secondary-school education.

Program Services

High School Diploma / Exit Exam Remediation This program is offered to students who wish to obtain a high school diploma. Students must meet the same graduation requirements as a student who graduates from a high school in South Carolina.

GED Preparation This high school equivalency diploma program is based on the GED Tests, a battery of assessments in four core academic areas: Language Arts (reading and writing), Social Studies, Science, and Mathematics. The new state GED Exam, starting January 2014, will be computer-based and aligned with Common Core State Standards.

Adult Basic Education This program serves adults who function below the 8th grade in reading and mathematics.

Community Collaborative Initiatives This program partners with community organizations. For on site services, Adult Education provides GED Preparation, ESL instruction, and a WorkKeys Career Readiness Certificate Program.

WorkKeys Career Readiness Program

The WorkKeys Career Readiness Program® provides instructional and assessment services to adult learners needing employability skill development for the purpose of job placement. The Career Readiness Certificate Program utilizes the Worldwide Interactive Network (WIN) Curriculum and KeyTrain in preparing participants for the WorkKeys assessments. Charleston Adult Education is part of the SC WorkReady Communities Initiative.

English Literacy

This program is designed to provide English instruction for adults who speak a

native language other than English or who have difficulty speaking, reading, writing, or understanding the English language.

State GED Testing Site

• Current version of GED test expires on December 31, 2013. Last revision was 2002. The paper and pencil version will no longer be available

• For over 40 years, Charleston Adult Education students travelled to Summerville to take the GED test

• New GED test is computer-based including the Essay Writing and is aligned with Common Core Standards

• Examinees will have broader access to GED test through the state-approved testing sites within each county

• Charleston County, based on size, ideally needs 2-3 testing locations. Number of GED test takers in 2012 – 2013: 390

• Testing sites can be dedicated space within a CCSD building that meets State Department of Education specifications

Brentwood Dedicated Room Use Ease of access from all parts of county via I-26

and I-526. Over 300 adults from the Brentwood/Dorchester area attend and travel to other program locations.
