Overview of Office 365 for Students
Downloading Office 2013, Using OneDrive, Office 365 Web Apps
FMCC is pleased to announce that Microsoft Office 365 is now available for use by students. All students
– regardless of their major – can take advantage of this offering. Students will be given access to the full
Office 2013 Professional Plus suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, InfoPath, Outlook, Lync, Publisher,
and OneNote)1. These can be downloaded and installed on student-owned home computers.
In addition to the Office suite, students can take advantage of free online file storage by uploading files
to OneDrive. This will facilitate access to files from anywhere as well as eliminate the need to carry
external drives. OneDrive provides each user with up to 1 TB (terabyte) of storage for files, images,
presentations, or other materials. Files can be organized into folders to enable easy navigation.
Office Web Apps allow students to open and edit files online rather than downloading them to the local
computer. The web apps include Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and can also be used from a mobile
device. Web Apps work from an iPhone, iPod Touch. or iPad; a Windows tablet or phone, or from an
Android or Google device.
In addition to all of these features, Office 365 is compatible with all current browsers. This includes:
Internet Explorer 10 or 11
Firefox
Chrome
Safari
Accessing the Student Office 365 Portal To take advantage of this offering, students must log into the Office 365 Portal. Open your browser and
navigate to the MyFM Student portal. Go to the FM home page (http://fmcc.edu). Locate the link
labeled MyFM:
OR
Once you click MyFM, click the link to the Student Resources page.
1 Mac Users will be given access to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Outlook for the Mac.
Users will enter a page that contains links to all of the resources available to students at FM. Locate the
link to the Office 365 portal.
Click the link labeled, Office 365 for Students. This link will bring users
to the Office 365 portal page. The organization account for this site is
the campus-assigned username and password for access. These are the
same credentials used to access all other campus resources (except My
Aid). The format for the log in is as follows:
So if the username is dp12345, students will log in as
[email protected]. The password is the same password used for
other campus resources. The log in screen is shown in the following
illustration.
Enter the credentials as described earlier in this document.
Downloading Office 2013 Once logged in for the first time, the Welcome screen appears. The illustration below shows the
welcome screen for a test user.
In the upper right corner of the Welcome screen is the username with a small gear shaped icon
(Settings) next to it. Click this icon and then choose the option labeled Office 365 Settings. This brings
the user to the Office 365 settings screen.
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD HERE. Select the Software option in this screen.
From this screen, click the button labeled, “Install” to download and install the Office suite on your
home computer. This is only for use on your home computer. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO INSTALL THE
SOFTWARE IN THE LABS AT FMCC. The install may take some time so it is important to let it continue
once it starts. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete this installation. Once the installation
completes, it will be possible to use the applications on the local machine by going to the Start button
All Programs Microsoft Office 2013. The illustration below demonstrates how to access the Office
suite of applications once installed on the computer.
Using OneDrive OneDrive is a free online storage service that allows subscribers to store files and folders in the cloud for
access anywhere in the world. At the top of the Office 365 Window are links that enable subscribers to
navigate the environment. Click the link labeled OneDrive. The first time OneDrive is accessed, the
screen appearance is as shown in the illustration below. Watch the video entitled, “Get Started with
OneDrive for Business.”
From the start button, click All Programs. Find the
folder labeled, Office 2013 and click that folder. Your
Office applications will be inside this folder. Your view
may look slightly different depending on the
applications installed.
OneDrive is an online version of the Windows Explorer. Along the top of the screen are three tabs.
Browse allows users to navigate areas of Office 365. File allows users to work with folders and files.
Library allows users to manage certain aspects of the OneDrive “library.” A library is simply a place to
store files and folders. Within the OneDrive documents folder is a folder labeled, “Shared with
Everyone.” This allows users to collaborate on projects. Shared with Everyone allows sharing within the
organization. Users can also create folders to share with specified groups or individuals.
Click the link to OneDrive.
Watch the OneDrive video.
Continue to OneDrive.
Office 365 Web Apps Another feature of this program is the ability to use the Office Web apps from anywhere even if Office is
not installed on the computer. Web apps for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are available for use from
OneDrive. Inside the OneDrive document library, click the large link labeled, “new” with the plus sign
next to it.
Once the subscriber chooses the kind of document they wish to create, the web app associated with
that file type will launch. Below is a screenshot of the Word web app. The web apps have approximately
80% of the functionality of the installed counterpart. The web apps allow for basic file creation and
editing. For more advanced features, use the locally installed version of Word.
Click new here:
Choose the item you wish to create.
You can also create a new folder.
There is no need to save the document since when working online the document is saved automatically.
Click the text in the title bar to rename the document. This applies to all documents created using web
apps. Click the link labeled with the user’s name to return to the documents library in OneDrive. To sign
out, click the drop-down arrow next to the username in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. Close
the browser completely after signing out. Never leave a session signed in.
