The Collect V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit.

Let us pray. O Lord, we beseech thee, let thy continual pity cleanse and defend thy Church: and, because she cannot continue in safety without thy succor; preserve her evermore by thy help and goodness; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Introit Miserere mihi Psalm 86:3,5,1 Have mercy upon me, O Lord, for I have called daily upon thee:

for thou, O Lord, art gracious and merciful, and plenteous in thy loving-kindness toward all them that call upon thee. (Ps.) Bow down thine ear, O Lord, and hear me: for I am poor and in misery.

(Bow) Glory be to the Father… (Rise) As it was in the beginning… Have mercy upon me…

The Lesson: Isaiah 50:5-9a The Lord God has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I turned not backward. I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I hid not my face from shame and spitting. For the Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been confounded; therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who is my adversary? Let him come near to me. Behold, the Lord God helps me; who will declare me guilty? V. The Word of the Lord. R. Thanks be to God.

The Epistle: James 2:14-18 What does it profit, my brethren, if a man says he has faith but has not works? Can his faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and in lack of daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what does it profit? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I by my works will show you my faith. V. The Word of the Lord. R. Thanks be to God.

The Holy Gospel: St. Mark 8:27-35 V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit.

V. + A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Saint Mark. R. Glory be to thee, O Lord.

At that time, Jesus went on with his disciples, to the villages of Cæsarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do men say that I am?” And they told him, “John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others one of the prophets.” And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Christ.” And he charged them to tell no one about him. And he began to teach them that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. And he said this plainly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter, and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not on the side of God, but of men.” And he called to him the multitude with his disciples, and said to them, “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the Gos-pel’s will save it.” V. The Gospel of the Lord. R. Praise be to thee, O Christ.

The snares of death compass’d me | round a- | bout: and the pains of | hell gat | hold up- | on me. I found trouble and heaviness; then I called upon the | Name of · the | Lord: O Lord, I be- | seech thee, · de- | liver · my | soul.

Gracious is the | Lord, and | righteous: -- | yea, our | God is | merciful. The Lord pre- | serveth · the | simple: I was in | miser- · y, | and he | help’d me.

And why? thou hast deliver’d my | soul from | death: mine eyes from | tears, · and my | feet from | falling. I will walk be- | fore the Lord in the | land |of · the | living.

Communion Antiphon Domine, memorabor Psalm 71:15,16,17 O Lord, I will make mention of thy righteousness only; thou, O God, hast taught me from my youth up until now:

Communion Anthem: “View Me, Lord” Richard Lloyd (b. 1933) View me, Lord, a work of thine!

Shall I then lie downed in night? Might thy grace in me but shine, I should seem made all of light.

Cleanse me, Lord, that I may kneel At thine altar pure and white; They at once thy mercies feel,

Gaze no more on earth's delight.

Worldly joys like shadows fade When the heavenly light appears;

But the covenants Thou hast made, Endless, know not days nor years.

In thy word, Lord, is my trust, To thy mercies fast I fly;

Though I am but clay and dust, Yet thy grace can lift me high.

Offertory Antiphon Domine, in auxilium Psalm 40:16b, 17 Make haste, O Lord, to help me; let them be ashamed and confounded together, that seek after my soul to destroy it:

make hast, O Lord, to help me.

An Act of Spiritual Communion for those who cannot now receive Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament

My Jesus, I believe that thou art truly present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love thee above all things, and I desire to receive thee into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive thee sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace thee as if thou wert already there and unite myself wholly to thee. Never permit me to be separated from thee. Amen.
