OFFERTA TESI MAGISTRALE - FISICA NUCLEARE SPERIMENTALE (Rivolgersi Prof. S. Leoni – [email protected]) Progetto che prevede stage presso Neutron facility di ILL – GRENOBLE http://www.ill.eu Durata dello stage: April/May to July/September 2016 SUBJECT: FIPPS (FIssion Product Prompt gamma ray Spectrometer) FIPPS is ILL’s new nuclear physics instrument being constructed within the ENDURANCE program. It consists of a halo free pencil beam of thermal neutrons directed onto stable or fissile target materials. The gamma rays emitted in the neutron-induced nuclear reactions are detected by a ring of 8 clover detectors (each consisting of 4 high-purity Ge crystals) and different types of ancillary detectors. FIPPS will be set up progressively, starting with the neutron beam collimation system, the detector support and the installation of the clover detectors that will become available during 2016. The detectors will be immediately used for background and in-beam measurements to optimize the signal to background conditions. The shielding towards neighboring instruments will be iteratively improved based on test measurements and simulations. The performance of clover and ancillary detectors will also be measured as function of magnetic stray fields. These tests serve to validate the operation of all detectors under presence of magnetic stray fields that are typical for g-factor experiments, use of circular gamma ray polarimeters and the installation of a gas-filled magnet as recoil separator.* Activities of the trainer: Participate in setting up the neutron beam collimation system and the clover detectors. Tune automatic liquid nitrogen filling system of the detectors. Tune digital data acquisition for optimum resolution. The focus of the training will be on advanced gamma ray spectroscopy and corresponding data analysis and simulations. The Institut Laue-Langevin is an international research centre based in Grenoble, France. At the leading edge of neutron science and technology, it operates one of the most intense neutron sources in the world.

SUBJECT: FIPPS (FIssion Product Prompt gamma ray Spectrometer)

FIPPS is ILL’s new nuclear physics instrument being constructed within the ENDURANCE program.
