SMC presents ‘The Matchmaker’

DOWAGIAC, Mich. — Paul Mow directs “The Matchmaker” at Southwestern Michigan College Oct. 24 26.

In Thornton Wilder’s play, irascible, penny-pinching store owner, Horace Vandergelder (Josh Boger), refuses to let niece Ermengarde (Jessica Lopez) marry Ambrose Kemper, the poor artist she loves (Daniel Breen), while planning to remarry himself.

Vandergelder’s beleaguered clerk, Cornelius Hackl, is played by Jason Cope, with Danny Ferenczi as Barnaby Tucker, Vandergelder’s shop assistant.

Isaac James portrays Malachi Stack, Vandergelder’s tipsy apprentice.

Ferenczi and Boger live in the same Niles neighbor-hood, but met at SMC because the former attended Edwardsburg High School while the latter went to Brandywine High School, where he knew James. Cope is from Bellevue, near Lansing.

Boger played the title role in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” two years ago before moving to Tampa with his family.

“It seems like I’ve done this forever,” said Boger, a former Bremen, Ind., resident.

“I went to a really small school and we did little kid musicals, so I started in second grade and never stopped. My stepmom was a choir director. There was always music in the house. My dad played guitar in bands and acted when he was younger. I’ve never played a character this mean. It was difficult finding the right voice.”

“The leads are trying to transfer to other schools to be vocal performance or acting majors,” said Cope, who debuted in last spring’s Jason Robert Brown musical, “Parade,” in which Ferenczi starred as Leo Frank.

Cope came to college from Renaissance fairs, intend-ing to major in medieval studies and be a professor or an historian who goes on digs.

“Some of the verbiage is hard because it was written a long time ago,” said Ferenczi, who has amazing physi-cal comedy chemistry with Cope. “Thornton Wilder definitely has an eye for comedy. I acted all through high school. I want to go to (the University of Michigan). My first part was sophomore year.”

James started freshman year with “The Sound of Music” and “Bye Bye Birdie,” both with Boger. He por-trayed Rooster Hannigan in “Annie” and the Cat in the

Hat in “Seussical.” As a high school junior he appeared in SMC’s “Joseph.”

“I’ve only done musicals until now, with the excep-tion of a melodrama at The Tin Shop in Buchanan,” James said. “This has a lot of heart. Each character has their own time to shine so you can find something to like about them.”

“It’s very well-written,” Boger agreed. “Even if you don’t like all the characters, you’re going to like one. It was very smart of (Mow) to make a minimalist set. It’s not about flash, it’s about heart-to-heart moments with each character. Major characters each have their own monologue, breaking the fourth wall with the audience.”

Mow took students to U of M over Easter for “Les Miserables.”

“That was an eye-opener,” Cope said, “because that legitimately felt like a professional production. If these kids are the same age as us, we don’t have any excuses for not being all we can be in every production SMC does.”

“That’s kind of what Paul wanted to show us with that trip,” Ferenczi said. “Hey, this can be you, too.”

Ferenczi and Cope will jump from “Matchmaker” into “The Christmas Schooner” at the Mendel Center, fol-lowed by SMC’s spring musical, Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Woods.”

Dolly Gallagher Levi (Eliza Carpenter), the match-maker, pretends to help Vandergelder find a suitable bride while actually scheming to marry him herself.

Cope’s Hackl meets the woman of his dreams (Jessica Blank as Irene Malloy, the hat-hating milliner), although

Vandergelder intends to marry her.Miranda Rael plays Minnie Fey, Malloy’s hat shop

assistant.Bruno Streck Rodrigues and Alex Jones are waiters at

the upscale Harmonia Gardens Restaurant. Chloe Chavers is the nanny Gertrude, with Tera Lynn Woolley as a gypsy musician.

Dakota Olguin is a world-weary cabman sucked into slapstick situations involving mistaken identities and secret rendezvous behind carefully placed screens.

In the end, everyone emerges happy and smarter.Wilder revised his 1938 farce “The Merchant of

Yonkers” and retitled it “The Matchmaker” in 1955. The year SMC was founded, 1964, David Merrick produced a musical version on Broadway.

“Hello Dolly,” starring Carol Channing, won 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

“Hello Dolly” was also made into a 1969 film nomi-nated for seven Academy Awards that starred Barbra Streisand. SMC staged “Hello Dolly” in 1982.

General admission costs $7, $5 seniors and is free to students with ID and those 18 and under. Shows start at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Premiere indoor facility open for businessCommunity invited to try out new golfing experience

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. — SWM Indoor Golf, the area’s first indoor golf center boasts

2,700 square feet of golf simulators located at 600 Langley Avenue in St. Joseph, Michigan. The establishment hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony last week.

The premiere indoor golf center will officially open their doors to the public following the opening ceremony. Golfers of all levels will be able to par-ticipate in a series of free challenges for prizes including closest-to-pin, long drive, putting, and bunker shot.

Local entrepreneurs, Richard Askren and Michael Alexander, both from Coloma, Michigan, and avid golfers and gamers developed the idea several years ago; wanting to create a facility where the local golf community could play their game all year long.

“Golf is such a popular sport, and with so many great courses in our area, we wanted to develop a space where golfers of all skill levels could hone their game throughout the year, and not have to risk losing momentum due to our sometimes long and cold winters,” said Askren. “SWM Indoor Golf will feature four state-of-the-art golf simu-lators where golfers of all ages can play a round of golf or work on their swing on the virtual driving range,” added Askren.

Askren and Alexander took their idea to the Women’s Business Center at Cornerstone Alliance and worked with the team to launch their start-up.

“We could not have done this without the Women’s Business Center,” Alexander said. “We knew that our idea was a good one, but weren’t completely certain on how to implement the logistics to make it happen; they were such a great

resource, and this experience would have been much more difficult without their expertise and guidance,” said Askren.

Plans for leagues and lessons are in the works, along with renting a portable golf simulator to use off site. Rates can be found on their website at www.smin-doorgolf.com. Golfers are now able to reserve time on the simulators to play a round of virtual golf or practice their swing.

“It’s always great to work with inno-vative entrepreneurs who have a pas-sion,” said Margaret Adams, Women’s Business Center Manager at Cornerstone Alliance. “Michael and Richard knew what they wanted to do, and were very diligent in making certain they had everything needed to launch this pre-miere business. All businesses start with an idea; we simply offer the resources and expertise to turn these ideas into a viable and successful business.”

To learn more about SWM Indoor Golf, visit their website at www.smind-oorgolf.com or their Facebook page h t t p s : / / w w w . f a c e b o o k . c o m /

The other day I was at brunch with my friend Matt, who ordered a stack of vegan pancakes. I just couldn’t resist. I hadn’t had pancakes in ages, but

as soon as I saw those fluffy pastries soaked in maple syrup, I had to indulge.

One bite and I was back to my child-hood Saturday morning breakfasts at the family table, dad on the griddle, mom at the skillet, the brothers scrambling around debating political issues, the cold Lake Michigan wind rattling outside.

My dad made pancakes or waffles about every weekend growing up, so years ago I came up with several vegan varia-tions of this family brunch staple. There’s something about the chill in the air that makes me crave my breakfast breads and brunch sweets. I guess with the holidays approaching and colder weather we need that comfort.

Top these gluten free griddle cakes with maple syrup and some local, seasonal fruit sauce and you’re set. In a world where pumpkin seems to be getting all the atten-tion, let’s not forsake the apple, our region’s fall jewel. By simply cooking the apples down a bit, add-ing some sugar and spices, you can make a scrump-tious seasonal topping in minutes.

This updated spiced apple recipe is cholesterol free since the apples are cooked in coconut oil. You can use the apples for more than just pancake topping. They’re great atop a vari-ety of dishes including ice cream, barbecue tempeh, or as a pie filling. Mix the recipe up by stirring in cranberries and orange zest.

Also, I use arrowroot powder to make the syrup in this recipe instead of using cornstarch which means it works paired with a corn-free recipes as well! As far as I can tell, arrowroot seems to be at about a 1 ½ times ratio to

corn starch. Arrowroot powder comes from a plant grown in the rainforests and is known to be one of the easiest sub-stances to digest. It has long been used in natural remedies for digestive issues.

Spiced Cooked ApplesYield: about 4 cups cooked apples

4 large baking apples such a Gala, McIntosh, Golden Delicious, or Granny Smith¼ cup coconut oil½ cup cold water 3 teaspoons arrowroot powder (or 1 teaspoon cornstarch)½ cup organic brown sugar½ teaspoon cinnamon¼ teaspoon nutmeg¼ teaspoon pure vanilla extract1/8 teaspoon ground clove

Peel and core apples, then slice very thinly.Heat oil in a large saucepan or skillet. I have a skillet with about 2 inch deep sides, which is perfect for this. Add the apples and cook until they start to become ten-der, stirring often. This should take about 5-7. Meanwhile, whisk together the arrowroot and water.Stir the arrowroot and water slurry along with the brown sugar into the cooking apples and reduce to a gentle simmer. Add the spices and vanilla. As soon as a gel forms, turn off the heat.

Cornmeal Pancakes Yield: about 6 pancakes

Combine the cornmeal, buckwheat flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cin-namon, and sea salt in a large mixing bowl with a whisk or fork. Leave a well in the center and set aside. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flax seed and water until you have a slurry. Add the soymilk and 2 tablespoons oil. Mix well then pour into dry ingredients and combine.Heat a skillet over medium high and add about 1 tablespoon vegetable oil. When oil starts to bubble, pour on batter in about ¼ cup dollops. After about 4-5 min-utes, or when batter starts to bubble, carefully flip pancakes. Cook until each side is golden brown and repeat until all batter is gone.Serve topped with a spoonful of cooked spiced apples and maple syrup.

Artlights!SOUTH BEND, Ind.

— Leaders at the South Bend Museum of Art invites the

community to join them for an evening of elegant fun as they host their annual gala event honoring guest artist Gundega Penikis and Friend of the Arts, Jeff Gibney.

ArtSlam begins with cocktails and a silent auction at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30.

All proceeds of the event will benefit community programming at the museum.

Ceramic Artist Gundega Penikis has nurtured area clay stu-dents for 40 years, teaching in the SBMA studios, Saint Mary’s College and Indiana University South Bend. Gundega arrived in South Bend in 1970, and within the year enrolled in a ceramics class at the then Art Center. “I dis-covered that working with clay was interesting, challenging and discouraging, but never boring.” She continues to create art and inspire her students in the SBMA studios.

Friend of the Arts Jeff Gibney (1949 – 2014) served as Executive Director of South Bend Heritage Foundation and South Bend’s Director of Community and Economic Development. His commitment to improving the quality of life in South Bend through neighbor-hood development focused on not just affordable housing, but incorporated the fundamental value of the arts in creating a satisfied and healthy community.

The evening’s program includes the tallying of votes for ArtSlam! This is a friendly competition among Five Fans of the SBMA: Rob DeCleene, Anne Feferman, Paul Kuharic, Chris Stackowicz, and Brooke Marks-Swanson. Each “Fan” has selected their favorite artwork from the Permanent Collection of the Museum and is creating a work of art in response to it, to be auctioned off at the event.

Click here or on each ArtSlammer’s photo to Vote for your favorite!

Votes are $40 each with all pro-ceeds benefitting community pro-gramming at the South Bend Museum of Art.

Rob DeCleene is a native of South Bend and a graduate of Adams High School. From there, he went to IU Bloomington and graduated in 1994 with a B.S. in Tourism Management. He has enjoyed a career in the tourism industry ever since and returned to his hometown in May 2010 to accept his current position as exec-utive director of Visit South Bend Mishawaka. The vibrant arts and cultural scene of our communities and campuses are a constant focus for Rob and his staff as he works to position our destination as posi-tively and impressively as possi-ble. He also loves his two Boston Terriers very much.

Anne Feferman is a SBMA

board member and serves on the executive committee. A South Bend native, she is the VP of Residential Mortgage Operations at Teachers Credit Union and serves in various community capacities such as the South Bend Education Foundation, Temple Beth-El and more. Her passions and interests include jewelry mak-ing, gardening, reading and being outdoors. “Growing up, my father was an avid collector of art and an SBMA board member. Both my parents felt very strongly about artistic expression and enrolled my brother and me in classes at the SBMA. That ignited a wonderful outlet for a lifetime of creative expression.”

Ceramicist Paul Kuharic has taught art for 15 years, the last 10 at St. Joseph High School in South Bend. “I have always derived plea-sure from creating things,” he states. Self taught in ceramics, he first started in the basics, striving

to achieve competency in form and function on the potter’s wheel. “As a teacher I am forced to teach func-tional pottery, but on my own time I choose to make more sculptural pieces. I don’t produce art about one subject or another. In my work, visual references derive from both nature and products of human con-sumerism. I make art solely for the enjoyment of executing ideas in a three dimensional way.”

Brooke Marks-Swanson received her MFA in Metals from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, Illinois and a BFA in Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design from Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana. Her wall pieces and jewelry have been fea-tured in national and international exhibitions, and reside in numer-ous public and private collec-tions. She has given workshops on process and exhibiting at craft shows, and taught Jewelry Design and Metalsmithing at Indiana

University-South Bend. A member of the Society of North American Goldsmiths, Brooke resides and maintains a full time studio in South Bend, Indiana, USA.

Chris Stackowicz was raised in Granger, Indiana and graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a BFA in Printmaking and a minor in Art History. He completed his MFA in Installation and Graduate Certificate in Cultural Studies at Stony Brook University in New York and taught art at Cardinal Hayes High School in the South Bronx. Chris moved back to Granger in 2004 and was Chair of the Department of Visual Arts at Bethel College before stepping down to form cstackstudios, a company focused on large scale community

based public beautification proj-ects. Examples of his work can be seen all over town: the Marian Devotional Ceiling Painting at Queen of Peace in Mishawaka Indiana, the exterior wall mural at Bar Louie in Mishawaka, Indiana, the 933 Bridge Project, the Downtown South Bend Crosswalk project, South Bend Brew Werks Floor Mural, and the Spring Forward project on vacant and abandoned home facades. Chris has also worked as an interna-tional photographer for the Greek Architecture Project at Corinth Greece, and for the Peirene Visual Reconstruction Project through the American school of classical studies. His work has been shown locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. Chris has served on numerous boards including Reading For Life and is also a candidate for County Council District C.

As an expert apprais-er, people often ask me what items are

worth. When I travel, peo-ple ask me what is a good buy and how to spot a bar-gain. Here are some quick tips about negotiating when traveling abroad:

Remember that every price is negotiable.

When you are shopping in a foreign country, learn about the customs associ-ated with bargaining in a specific locale.

Always be polite.Payments made in cash

will provide you with more negotiating power.

Use local currency whenever possible.

Use your smartphone to help you learn common shopping phrases in the local language.

Do your homework and know what you are buying.

Ask about the shop’s return policy if you are not satisfied when you get home.

Get contact information (name, physical address, website address, and phone

number) about the shop for future reference.

If you have not come to an agreement after negoti-ating, say thank you and move on gracefully.

When traveling to vari-ous parts of the world, there are certain items that are known to be bargains. For instance, in the Mediterranean region, I shop for leather goods and fashion accessories in Italy and pottery, wine and figs in Greece. Turkey and its geographical link between Europe and Asia is a great place to visit the grand bazaar shops in search of locally made textiles, jew-elry, and spices. The Middle East is also a good shopping area for jewelry and gemstones.

In the Baltics countries such as Denmark and Finland, you will find bar-gains on woolen clothing and hand-made wood objects. The Caribbean islands offer good deals on collectible objects and original sculptures and handbags made by local artists. In the South Pacific islands, you will find

woven basketry and pearls on sale.

While the unique quali-ties of objects found in far off lands are interesting, be prepared to shop wisely while on vacation. Remember that in many tourist areas, prices are inflated in an effort to attract buyers who live elsewhere. Stick to your budget and compare prices from shop to shop when-ever you can. No matter where you travel, remem-ber that quality equals value.

BENTON HARBOR, Mich., Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra and internationally-

acclaimed Cirque de la Symphonie perform your favorite ‘spook’-tacular classics in perfect sync. Haunting har-monies and spectacular acrobatic art-istry will turn the hall into a chilling chamber of fantastical fright and delight. Concert-goers are invited to come in their best costumes and expe-rience the enchantment of symphonic music at its ghoulish best on Saturday, Nov, 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the Lake Michigan College Mendel Mainstage.

“Those who experienced the incredi-ble evening’s entertainment provided by cirque at their last visit,” said Music Director Robin Fountain, “will remem-ber the sheer exhilaration their showman-ship produces in combination with the powerful music making of the SMSO.”

Cirque de la Symphonie Background and Bios of Performers

Cirque de la Symphonie is an excit-ing production designed to bring the magic of cirque to the music hall. It is an elegant adaptation of some of the most amazing cirque acts performed on a stage shared with the full symphony orchestra, showcasing many of the best artists in the world.

The audience is thrilled and bedaz-zled by aerial flyers, acrobats, contor-tionists, dancers, jugglers, balancers, and strongmen. These accomplished veterans include world record holders, gold-medal winners of international competitions, Olympians and some of the most original talent ever seen.

Each performance is perfectly cho-reographed to classical masterpieces, raising cirque artistry to a fine arts level. Adding a stunning visual ele-ment to the concert experience, these aerialists and acrobats provide a three-dimensional entertainment extravagan-za. Orchestras play with enhanced enthusiasm, while patrons marvel at the jaw-dropping spectacle of aerialists flying overhead and astonishing acro-batic feats. Fusing the power and maj-esty of the live orchestra with the best of cirque artistry, Cirque de la Symphonie is the only cirque company in the world that performs exclusively with symphony orchestras.

Over one hundred orchestras world-wide have featured Cirque de la Symphonie in sold-out venues, adding energy and excitement to the concert experience. Join us on Facebook and explore our website for images, video, schedule, reviews, and more: www.cirquedelasymphonie.com
