1. C h a r a c t e r i s t i c s . U S S BUNKER HILL is a n AEGIS G u i d e d Missile C r u i s e r of t h e TICONDEROGA class. However, i t is t h e f irst s h i p of t h e class e q u i p p e d w i t h t h e MK 4 1 Vert ical L a u n c h i n g S y s t e m (VLS) for missiles ( S t a n d a r d Missile 2 B l o c k 11, Tomahawk C r u i s e Missile) which sets i t a p a r t f r o m p r e d e c e s s o r s d e l i v e r e d w i t h t h e MK 2 6 G u i d e d Missile L a u n c h i n g S y s t e m . BUNKER HILL is t h e first c o m b a t a n t d e s i g n e d f r o m t h e k e e l u p t o c a r r y t h e Tomahawk C r u i s e Missile.

Its o f f e n s i v e s t r i k e c a p a b i l i t y is i m p r e s s i v e l y d e m o n s t r a t e d b y i t s a b i l i t y to s t r i k e t a r g e t s a t sea a n d a s h o r e w i t h a l l t h r e e v a r i a n t s of t h e Tomahawk C r u i s e Missile. A f t e r a f l a w l e s s p e r f o r m a n c e t h r o u g h o u t a l e n g t h y , s h o r t - n o t i c e W e s t e r n P a c i f i c / I n d i a n Ocean Deployment , f a i l e d gear t e e t h were d i s c o v e r e d on t h e u p p e r F i r s t R e d u c t i o n G e a r i n t h e Number Two Main R e d u c t i o n G e a r (MRG) w h i l e i n p o r t P e a r l H a r b o r , Hawai i . The g e a r was l o c k e d f o r t h e r e t u r n t r a n s i t to S a n Diego, C a l i f o r n i a .
F i f t y - s e v e n " T i g e r s " ( m a l e f a m i l y members a n d f r i e n d s of B u n k e r H i l l p e r s o n n e l ) were p i c k e d u p i n P e a r l H a r b o r f o r t h e t e n d a y t r a n s i t to S a n Diego. B a s i c " Q u a l i f i c a t i o n S t a n d a r d s " were d e v e l o p e d for t h e r iders i n c l u d i n g v a r i o u s t a s k s s u c h a s o b s e r v i n g weapons f i r i n g , d o n n i n g a k a p o k l i f e j a c k e t , a n d o b s e r v i n g Combat I n f o r m a t i o n C e n t e r o p e r a t i o n s .

3 . On 1 2 F e b r u a r y 1 9 8 8 , a v i s u a l i n s p e c t i o n on t h e Number Two MRG w a s completed. Gear t o o t h damage was c o n f i n e d t o t h e u p p e r f irst r e d u c t i o n g e a r , a p p a r e n t l y d u e t o m i s a l i g n m e n t r e s u l t i n g from a m a c h i n i n g error. The High S p e e d G e a r set would b e r e p l a c e d w i t h a n I n g a l l ' s S h i p y a r d s p a r e .

7. A s a t i s f a c t o r y Sea T r i a l was c o n d u c t e d t h r o u g h 5 0 % a n d 1 0 0 % f u l l power . A post t r i a l i n s p e c t i o n i n d i c a t e d 1 0 0 % f u l . 1 - f a c e t o o t h c o n t a c t on a l l gear e l e m e n t s . Number Two MRG is c e r t i f i e d for u n r e s t r i c t e d o p e r a t i o n s b y NAVSSES, NAVSEACENPAC, a n d W e s t i n g h o u s e o b s e r v e r s . 8. A Tomahawk Land A t t a c k Missile V a r i a n t D (TLAM-D), w a s f i red from t h e a f t v e r t i c a l l a u n c h e r a f t e r a n a m m u n i t i o n o n l o a d a t Pier B r a v o N a v a l A i r S t a t i o n , N o r t h I s l a n d . R i d i n g t h e s h i p was M r . H o r a c e Chambers from N a v a l S h i p Weapon S y s t e m s E n g i n e e r i n g S t a t i o n (NSWSES)
and some camera men who s h o t f o o t a g e of t h e l a u n c h . C o n d i t i o n I was set o n e h o u r p r i o r t o l a u n c h a s t h e s h i p maneuvered to t h e l a u n c h p o s i t i o n . A t 0900, l a u n c h o c c u r r e d a n d t h e missi le f l e w t o i ts c o n c l u s i o n w i thou t error.
9. COMNAVSURFPAC A v i a t i o n A s s i s t V i s i t (AAV) was upgraded to a n A v i a t i o n R e a d i n e s s E v a l u a t i o n (ARE) fo r t h e t h i r d c o n s e c u t i v e yea r .
10. A COMNAVSURFPAC b o i l e r i n s p e c t o r , BTCS Adams, c o n d u c t e d a Waste Hea t Boiler I n s p e c t i o n . A l l t h r e e Waste Hea t Boi lers were judged to be i n S a t i s f a c t o r y u m a t e r i a l c o n d i t i o n . For t h e Boiler I n s p e c t i o n R e p o r t see E n c l o s u r e (712).
11. BUNKER HILL was t h e first COMNAVSURFPAC s h i p t o have a n A v i a t i o n T e c h n i c a l A s s i s t upgraded to a F l i g h t Deck C e r t i f i c a t i o n by t h e Naval A i r E n g i n e e r i n g C e n t e r .
12. P a s s e d N u c l e a r Weapons T r a i n i n g (9024) , N u c l e a r Weapons A s s i s t Team v i s i t , a n d Command i n s p e c t i o n w i t h no m a j o r d e f i c i e n i e s .
13. E n r o u t e San F r a n c i s c o from San Diego BUNKER HILL c o n d u c t e d a l i v e C l o s e I n Weapons S y s t e m (CIWS) f i r i n g a g a i n s t a a i r b o r n e towed t a r g e t . The t a r g e t was s h o t off t h e w i r e on t h e first r u n by t h e STBD CIWS Mount (Mount 2 1 ) . 14. On 1 3 J u n e 1988, a v i s u a l i n s p e c t i o n of t h e Number ONE MRG ( d u r i n g follow on i n s p e c t i o n to t h e p o r t MRG r e p a i r s ) d i s c o v e r e d u n s a t i s f a c t o r y t o o t h c o n t a c t s . Naval Sea C e n t e r P a c i f i c (NAVSEACENPAC) c o n f i r m e d t h i s f a c t on 1 5 J u n e 1988, a n d recommended t h a t t h e s t a r b o a r d MRG n o t b e o p e r a t e d u n t i l f u r t h e r i n v e s t i g a t i o n r e v e a l e d t h e c a u s e of t h e problem. On 2 3 J u n e , t h e h u l l was c u t open a n d work on t h e Number ONE MRG began i n e a r n e s t .
I n l a t e J u n e 1988, BUNKER HILL p a s s e s t h e N u c l e a r Weapons Acceptance I n s p e c t i o n (NWAI) w i t h t e n o u t s t a n d i n g s a n d o n e e x c e l l e n t i n t h e v a r i o u s a r e a s cove red .
15. BUNKER HILL p a s s e d t h e C r u i s e Missile T a c t i c a l Q u a l i f i c a t i o n (CMTQ) i n a n u n p r e c e d e n t e d 31 h o u r s . F o r t h e o f f i c i a l r e p o r t see

18. Before l e a v i n g for J a p a n , BUNKER HILL had a D e p e n d e n t ' s C r u i s e for f a m i l y a n d f r i e n d s . The d a y a t s e a c o n s i s t e d of: a h igh-speed run , F ive - Inch Gun a n d C l o s e I n Weapon S y s t e m f i r i n g s , a n d a LAMPS

19. BUNKER HILL conducted a TLAM Quality Assurance Systems Test m i s s i l e shot o f f t h e Southern Cal i forn ian coas t . I t was c a r r i e d out s i m i l a r t o t h e 8 Apri l TLAM-D shot except t h i s was p a r t o f a coordinated land a t t a c k w i t h t a c t i c a l a i r bombers.
20. While i n p o r t Pea r l Harbor, a sof tware change (Baseline 2 .1 .4 ) was i n s t a l l e d . 21. BUNKER HILL conducted t h e AAW Quickfix v a l i d a t i o n on the P a c i f i c Miss i le F i r i n g Range (PMRF). The exe rc i se included f i r i n g a Standard Missi le II a t a high speed, high d iv ing t a r g e t while simultaneously having a 5"/54 Cal iber Gun engagement i n the system.
22. LONEWOLF 51 (BUNKER H I L L ' s embarked LAMPS MK III h e l i c o p t e r ) conducted an extremely successfu l torpedo f i r i n g e x e r c i s e working i n coordinat ion w i t h USS FIFE'S LAMPS helo - LONEWOLF 50. Attack c r i t e r i a was reached w i t h a sonobuoy b a r r i e r pene t ra t ion by a MK 30 mobile t a r g e t , and a MK 4 6 Mod 5 a i r drop e x e r c i s e torpedo was de l ivered 850 yards from t h e t a r g e t .
23. BUNKER H I L L steamed t o i t s new home p o r t of Yokosuka, Japan w i t h t h e USS FIFE (DD-991). The two s h i p t r a n s i t included numerous ship-maneuvering exe rc i ses and weapons f i r i n g s .
24. BUNKER HILL a r r i v e d i n Yokosuka, Japan jo in ing t h e forward deployed U.S. Seventh F l e e t a s p a r t of the Overseas Family Residency Program (OFRP) . A t l e a s t twelve h e l i c o p t e r s , 0wr~ed o r cha r t e red by Japanese news media, followed t h e s h i p from Tokyo Harbor ent rance t o the p i e r i n Yokosuka. Upon t h e s h i p ' s a r r i v a l p i e r s i d e , BUNKER HILL was gree ted by many well-wishers ( m i l i t a r y and c i v i l i a n ) , f a m i l i e s o f crew members, and approximately 80 Japanese r e p o r t e r s and photographers. 25. Wi th only th ree days no t i ce , BUNKER H I L L was underway f o r Olympic Presence Operations w i t h t h e USS N I M I T Z and USS MIDWAY. The s h i p ' s d u t i e s a s Force A n t i - A i r Warfare Coordinator f o r t h i s Federated B a t t l e Force were heralded by a l l p a r t i c i p a n t s i n t h e l a r g e operat ion.
26. ANNUALEX 63G is a major Anti-Submarine Warfare Exercise conducted each year i n con junct ion w i t h t he Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). During t h e exe rc i se , BUNKER HILL prosecuted 5 submarine con tac t s w i t h numerous simulated torpedo f i r i n g s over the s i d e , and torpedo drops by LONEWOLF 51.
Haven Operations were conducted al lowing BUNKER HILL t o use i t s AN/SPY-1A radar t o d e t e c t and t rack a i r t a r g e t s flyimg a t t a c k p r o f i l e s overlarid on the e a s t e r n c o a s t of Japan. T h e opera t ion was a complete success w i t h good de tec t ion ranges.
27. BUNKER HILL c o n d u c t e d a l i v e missile f i r i n g o f f Poro P o i n t , R e p u b l i c of t h e P h i l l i p i n e s . T h e t a r g e t was a l o w f l y i n g , h i g h s p e e d d r o n e d e s t r o y e d by a s h i p ' s S t a n d a r d Missile II o n A u t o - S p e c i a l engagement .
