It p l a y s a d e f e n s i v e role by p r o v i d i n g p r o t e c t i o n for a n ENTIRE C a r r i e r - B a t t l e Group or S u r f a c e A c t i o n Group a g a i n s t t h e S o v i e t a i r , s u r f a c e a n d s u b s u r f a c e t h r e a t . Its o f f e n s i v e s t r i k e c a p a b i l i t y is i m p r e s s i v e l y d e m o n s t r a t e d b y i t s a b i l i t y to s t r i k e t a r g e t s a t sea a n d a s h o r e w i t h a l l t h r e e v a r i a n t s of t h e Tomahawk C r u i s e Missile.
