|ARCHIVISTSubmittedby:GloriaLund TheAnnualmeetingforNationalEpiscopalHistoriansandArchivists(N.E.H.A.)wasinlateJunethisyear,inNewYorkCity.ThehumiditywasbarelytolerableaswewalkedthesixblocksfromourhoteleachdaytoSt.Michael’sEpiscopalChurchonW99thSt.,wherethemeetingswereheld.

Inspiteofmy‘tongueincheek’attitudetowardsthethemeofthismeeting“Immigration,GoingOutandComingIn:Ministries,TransitionandChangeintheEpiscopalChurch”,thereweresomeveryinterestingpresentations;examplesfromhistoryarehowtheStateofVirginiawelcomedforeignrefugeesinthe1950sandhowtheDioceseofOlympiaishandlingRefugeeResettlementrightnow.Also,apanelconversationonthepracticalvalueoftheChurchArchivistandtheactualfactsofworkingwithAncestory.com,whichtheDioceseofNewYorkhasjustcompleted.Ithinkwearegoingtobepleasedwiththeirwork. WehadawonderfulfieldtriptothebeginningsofourChurch–TrinityChurch(1697)andSt.PaulChapel(1766)aswellaslearningabouttheroletheyplayedintheaftermathofdestructionof the Twin Towers in 2001. Another afternoon we toured the General Theological SeminaryLibrarywiththeirRareBooksandArchivalDisplayandwereinvitedtostayfortheirAnnualGardenPartyandEvensong–alovelyafternooninthemiddleofanintensiveweek.Exceptthatthebusesforgottopickusupattheendoftheday–butthenyoudon’tsweatthelittlethingswhenyouareinNewYorkCity. Iwasproud tobeapartof the committee thathas restored theLaurenceD.FishParishHistoryAwardwithaprizeof$200.TheawardwenttotheRev.RobertSemeswhowroteAChurchGrows in theDesert:AHistoryof theEpiscopalChurchof St.Paul in theDesert,1939-2014 (PalmSprings,CA).Ourplanistogivethisawardeverytwoyears–thenextawardwillbegivenin2019.HopefullytherewillbetwodifferententriesfromtheDioceseofSpokane.Iamcertainlylookingforward to seeing one of our own bring this award home. For your information, Archives forCongregations:APracticalGuidetoDevelopingaChurchArchives,2ndedition,isnowavailable.WearelookingforavolunteertoassistwiththetranslationofthispublicationintoSpanish. IcertainlyhopethatDiocesanCouncilwillbeabletocontinuetofundmyinvolvementastheArchivistastheyhaveinthepast,asIfindtheseannualmeetingsveryinformative.Iwish,also,thateachofourcongregationswouldseetoitthattheyhaveanarchivistappointedandinplacethatwouldjointhisorganizationandparticipateintheannualmeeting.Thereissomuchtobesharedandtolearn.

• Episcopalianscontinuetoworshipat8and10AM• TheWay of GodMinistries "CommunityGathering" of homeless and neighborhood

residentsmeetat12:30PMforworshipandameal.• ConquestChurch,ayoungadultcongregation,meetsat4PM

HundredsofpeopleuseSt.Michael'ssevendaysaweek:

Over250peopleattendedoneoftheirorientationmeetingsrecently!• St. Michael's food pantry is open every Friday from 10 AM to Noon

In2016thepantryserved5,848households,anddistributed144,294lbs.offoodwith1,551volunteerhours.

SpecialEventsthroughouttheyearinclude:

• World AIDSDay vigil and health fair in partnershipwith local health organizations,featuringAIDSmemorialquiltsfromtheYakimaMuseum

• FirstAnnualTransgenderMemorialService• FaithActionNetwork’sYakimaLegislativeBriefing• ChristmasParty,ShoveTuesDayPancakeSupper,andEasterBasketsforthewomen

andchildreninParkwayApartmentsTransitionalHousing• OurFirstAnnualDinnerandAuctionFundraiserinNovemberputonincollaboration

2017hasbeenaveryspecialyear for theBishop'SGuild.Wewelcomedourninthbishopof thedioceseofSpokane,theRightReverendGretchenRehberg.Atherordinationwepresentedherwithvestments,therochetandchimere.Followingtheordination,wehostedareception.

ThepurposeoftheBishop'sGuildistosupporttheBishopandhermissionascalledupon.Theguildsupports the Bishop's Discretionary Fund and Scholarship Fund from the proceeds of our twoannualfundraisers.

WearepartoftheCathedralGuildOrganizationalthoughourmembershipconsistsofwomenfromcongregationsaroundtheDiocese.Wewelcomenewmembers.Ourcurrentmembershipincludeswomen from Coeur d Alene St. Luke's, Ritzville St. Marks's, Spokane, Cathedral of St. John, St.Andrew's,St.David's,St.Stephen's,SpokaneValleyEpiscopalChurchoftheResurrection.

The Guild traditionally hosts receptions for ordinations that are held at the Cathedral andsometimesforconfirmationsattheBishop'srequest.

TheBishop'sGuildmeetsoncemonthlyonthesecondFridayintheGuildRoomsofthecathedral.atnoon

|CAMPCROSSSubmittedby:ColinHaffner,ExecutiveDirectorTheseasonatCampCrosswasgreatonceagain.Energyandexcitementovercampisextremelyhigh,andthisshouldonlyincreaseinthecomingyears.Thechallengesofthissummerwererelativelyquietcomparedtoyearspast,thoughthereisalwaysmuchgoingonandmuchtobedone.Averyquicksnapshotofthesummer(andyear)todate:CamperDemographics:

• CampCrosshashadanall-aroundsuccessfulyear.Mostcampsexceededregistrationnumbersfrom2016.TheexceptionwasourJr.HighCamp,whichcouldbeattributedtotheJuly4holiday.

• About67%ofouryouthcampersand80%offamilyandadultparticipantsidentifywithachurchintheEpiscopalDioceseofSpokane.

• About1in3campersreceivedafullorpartialscholarshiptocampthissummer.• Ofthosereceivingcamperships,80%weresponsoredbyachurchintheDioceseof

Spokane&20%receivedacampershipfromCampCross.• 25%ofourcampersthissummerwereatCampCrossforthefirsttime.

GivingtoCampCross:

• FundraisingfortheSaints-A-Crosspontoonboatispickingupagain.BishopRehbergsentoutaletteronSeptember1thathasreceivedagoodresponsetodate.FurtherpushesintheDiocesanDigestandaphone-a-thonattheendofSeptemberarealsoplanned.

• $10,000giventotheCampCrossEndowment.• Nearly$19,000wasgiventotheCampCrossFund.• We’vereceiveddesignatedgiftstotalingmorethan$15,000towardthepontoonrepairs

andotherneedsatcamp.• Inaddition,wereceivedin-kinddonationsofanewrefrigeratorfortheArk,anawningfor

thewaterfront,newbedmattresses,andanewkayak.• Further,morethan70volunteersgavetheirtimethissummerascounselors,resource

teamleaders,healthcareproviders,andkitchenvolunteerstotalingnearly6000hoursoffreeskilledlabortoCampCross,ormorethan$70,000inwages.

• WewereabletoaccomplishafewmorefacilityneedswiththehelpofGonzagaUniversity’sRealityCamp.Theyjoinedusforthe6thyearin2017anddidworkchangingrottedboardsonthedeck,paintingcabins,anddoingalargeamountoflandscapingonthenewlyrenamed“BishopWaggonerSunsetChapel.”

• TheJr.HighSessionwasendedearlyduetoafailedsepticpump.Thiswasrepairedbutwillneedaddressinginthenearfuture.

• Acomprehensivefacilityauditisbeingcompletedtogiveabetterunderstandingofthescopeofcurrentfacilityneedsforthecamp.

OtherNotes:

• Weareontargettomeetourbudgetgoalsthisyear.AsofAugust15wewereabout$10,000underbudget.Thiswillleveloffastheseasoncomestoaclose.

• TheschedulefornextseasonwillbepostedpriortoAnnualConventionfortheDiocese.• Volunteersarebecomingabiggerchallenge,especiallyintheareaofcertifiedhealthcare

providers.• CampprogramcontinuestofurtherintegratetheDailyOfficeintoeachday,andthiswillbe

fullyintegratedstartingin2018.

• ThepoorairqualityalteredsomeactivitiesandprogramduringtheSr.Highsession.|CANONSFORREGIONALMISSIONSubmittedby:TheRev’sAnneBarton,MarilynWilder,BillOsborne,RobinBiffleNorthwestRegionTheRev.MarilynWilder(TrinityChurch,Oroville)Inthispastyear,inmyroleastheCanonforRegionalMissionfortheNFW,IhaveworkedregularlywiththeRegionalDevelopmentTeaminthepreparationandfacilitationofthe2017SpringandFallDiocesanGatheringDays.ThescopeofthisteamworkconsistedofworkingwiththeRev.CanonSusan Cleveley, Canon for Congregation Development, and the Regional Development Team increatingthematerialandagendafortheGatheringDaysaswellasmonthlyWEBEXmeetingstodiscussissuesandchallengesforthespiritualhealthanddevelopmentofthecongregationsintheDiocese.WeallmettwotimesonretreattogetherinthislastyearinordertopreparethecontentfortheGatheringDays.IhaveoccasionallybeenasupplypriestfortheBishop’sChapelintheMethow.TheyusetheAllianceChurchinWinthropforchurchonSundayevenings.Regularmeetingsoftheclergyoftheregionarehappeningasoflate.WearetryingtomeetbySkypeforaportionofthesemonthlymeetingstohelpwiththelong-distancespeoplemusttraveltogettogether.We,overthelastyearhavebeenworkingwiththebook“UnbindingtheGospel”butnowwillbereadingandsharing“StateoftheEpiscopalChurch,USA”byCrabtree.IthasbeenmypleasureandmyprivilegetoservewithBishopGretchenRehbeg,theRev.SusanCleveley, theRev. JanetGriffinandthemembersof theRegionalDevelopmentTeamtogether inministryinthisDioceseinthelastyear.NortheastRegion:TheRev.BillOsborne(St.Stephen’s,Spokane)TheCanons forRegionalMissionare called towork in collaborationwith theBishopandotherCanonsforRegionalMissionforcongregationaldevelopment.Specifically,theCanonsforRegionalMissionarerequiredtopresideatallmeetingsoftheregion;tocallandpresideatregularmeetingsoftheregionalclericus;toworkwithothermembersoftheRegionalDevelopmentTeamandwithDiocesanstaff;toorganize,plan,andleadthetwice-annualRegionalGatheringDays;toconsultwithregionalclergy;tobeavailableforcounseltotheVestriesandBishop’sCommitteesofcongregationswithvacantcuresand,whenrequested,tohelpprovideforsacramentalcareduringvacancies;toadvisetheBishopofanysituationswhich,intheopinionoftheCanonforRegionalMission,requirestheBishop’sattention;toreportfromtimetotimetotheBishopandtheDiocesanCouncilontheprogress,needs,andprospectsoftheworkwithintheregions;andtomakeanannualreporttotheConventionoftheofficialactsbytheCanonforRegionalMission.

havealsomettogethermonthlyalongwiththemembersoftheBoardofSt.Michael’sSpecializedMissionastheyhavebeguntoplanfortheirministryworkinbecomingmorelinkedwiththelocalcommunity.InadditiontoleadingtheClericusmeetings,IhavemetmonthlywithBishopGretchenRehbergandtheotherthreeCanonsviaWEBEXinordertoshareinformationwithourBishopandoneanotherthe issues facing the congregations of our Diocese. In specific instances of direct contactwithchurchesintheSWregion,IprovidedtrainingonhowtoleadMorningPrayertoaministryteamatHolyTrinity,Sunnysideandon-goingconsultationwiththeDeaconandSr.WardenofAllSaints,RichlandwhiletheirRectorwasonsabattical.IalsometregularlywithindividualclergyintheSWRegionandSr.Wardenstoprovidepastoralsupporttothemasneeded.IthasbeenmypleasureandmyprivilegetoservewithBishopGretchenRehbeg,theRev.SusanCleveley, theRev. JanetGriffinandthemembersof theRegionalDevelopmentTeamtogether inministryinthisDioceseinthelastyear.SoutheastRegionTheReverendRobinBiffle(St.Mark’s,Moscow)Inearly2017,IwasappointedCanonforRegionalMissionintheSoutheastRegion.Thesehavebeenmonthsofintenseorientingandlearning.Themostexcellentpartoftheworkisthatitisalmostalways teamwork—with other members of the Regional Development Team (RDT); with theRegionalDeveloperintheSoutheast(TheRev.CanonSusanCleveley);withtheclergyintheregion;withtheBishop;withPaulsenHousestaff;andwithsomanyothers—allundertaken“toequipthesaintsfortheworkofministry,forbuildingupthebodyofChrist”(Eph.4:12).CanonsaretopresideattheRegionalGatheringDays(RGD),but—thankfully—thatplanningandfacilitationhappeninconjunctionwiththeRegionalDeveloperandwiththeentireRDT.Theeightofusmeetforanintenseplanning“over-nighter”beforeeachRGD,andagainafterwardtodebriefand to get a head-start on thenextRGD. In addition to the four face-to-facemeetings,wemeettogether one amonthwith the Bishop via a remote internet video platform (WebEx) to shareaccomplishments and challenges of the congregationswe serve throughout the diocese, and toshareperspectivesonhowmorepowerfullywemight“becompellingwitnessestoJesus”—inourownplacesandwithinthedioceseasawhole.Canonsalsoconveneandfacilitateregularmeetingsoftheregionalclericus;intheSoutheast,clergytrytomeetmonthlyforthreehours.Duringthosemeetings,theRegionalDeveloperandIhopetohear from the clerics in the region how we can support their work in serving the region’scongregationsintheirministries.Inmeetings,weusuallyspendanhourineachofthreeareas:1)formationinourlivesandworkasclergy,andasdisciplesofJesus;2)sharingpersonalnewsandtalking about ministries in our congregations; and then 3) the Regional Developer and IcommunicatenewsfromtheBishop,PaulsenHousestaff,otherregions,andthelargerchurch—allofwhichmaybearonourworktogether.This year in the Southeast, The Rev. Canon Susan Cleveley (who also serves as Canon forTransitions) has taken the lead in working with congregations in our region who are without

CanonforRegionalMission:The Canon for Regional Mission (CRM’s) holds clericus meetings within each region.Consideringeachregion’suniqueneeds,eachCanonmeetswithregionalclergy4-9timesper year for fellowship, theological reflection, study and conversation pertinent to theirministriesandcongregationalwork.Theycallandpresideoverthetworegionalgatheringsheldinthespringandfallandareex-officiomembersofDiocesanCouncil.ForadditionalinformationpleasetheCanon’sreport.RegionalDevelopers:As members of the bishop’s staff, Regional Developers (RD’s) work within each regionprovidingsupport,resourceandtrainingtocongregations,theirleadersandclergythroughvestry/bishopcommitteeretreats,congregationalmeetings,large/smallgroupfacilitation,consultation with congregational leaders. Thisspring,theRegionalDevelopmentTeamandcongregationaldevelopershostedthe

Spring Regional Gatherings in four locations around the diocese, connectingapproximately 200+ diocesan leaders for fellowship, sharing, training and openconversation with the Rt. Rev’d Gretchen Rehberg. The morning was spentappreciativelyexploringourcongregationsthroughtheuseofbiblicalstoryandimagerytobetterunderstandwhoweareandwhereGodinvitesustogo.Additionally,ourworkwasmeanttowelcomeandorienteachother,aswellasournewBishop,tothedioceseasawholeandeachcongregationinparticular.Afterlunch,BishopRehbergsharedhervisionandprioritiesforthedioceseandansweredquestionsfromparticipantsonawiderangeoftopics.

2. OurFallRegionalGatheringDaywillbeheldonSeptember30,2017(afterthewritingofthisreport).Wewillreflectonscripture,thenatureofthechurchasbothahumananddivineinstitutionandexplorehowourbuildingsandpropertiesshapeusandactasoutward and visible signs of our inward grace. We will conclude the day withpreparationfordiocesanconventiontoincludetheexplorationandsharingofconcretewaysthatwewitnesstoJesusChristinourownuniqueministrycontextsthroughoutthediocese.

3. As in 2017, the 2018 Spring Gathering Days are scheduled to be held over fourconsecutiveSaturdaysandtheBishopwillbepresentineachregion.

CongregationalDevelopment:1. ThissummersawusofferingthefourthyearoftheSpokaneCollegeforCongregationalDevelopment.TheRev.CanonSusanCleveleyservesastheDirectoroftheCollege.Assuchshegatherswiththedirectorsfromotherdiocesesandhelpsplanthecurriculum.The College is an intensive two-year course of practicum and study designed forcongregational teams wanting deeper, intentional learning, skills development and

practiceintheareaofcongregationaldevelopment.32participantsfromfivediocesesattendedtheweeklongintensiveinSpokane.Additionally,weaddedanewunitfocusedoninterculturalcompetencyandinvitedourgraduatestudentsjoinusattheendoftheweek increasing our participation to 39. Through the generous underwriting of thebishop,everySpokanediocesanattendeewhowishedreceiveda30%tuitionreductiontooffsettheirfees.Thetrainingstaffincluded:theRev.Cn.SusanCleveley,theRev.Cn.Arienne Davison (Diocese of Olympia), the Rev. Cn. Bill Osborne, and the Rt. Rev.GretchenRehberg.TheRev.CanonSusanCleveleyrepresentedtheDioceseofSpokaneontheCollegeforCongregationalDevelopmenttrainingstaffintheDiocesesofChicagoandOlympia.

Themissionandpurposeofthetreasureristooverseeandassurethe“receipt,care,anddisbursement”ofthefundsoftheDiocese.ThispersonisresponsibleforascertainingthesoundnessofthefinancialpracticesoftheDioceseandmaintainingitsfiscalintegrity. Receipts of pledged income from congregational Askings for 2016 exceeded thebudgetedamountbyjustunder7%.ThisoverageistheresultofthepaymentofbackAskingsowedmostlybythreechurchesfromthepreviousyear(s).Wehavebeeninthe94%to96%rangeofAskingssupportforthepastseveralyears,andthe2016levelofsupportpushesustothehighendofthisspread,andfurther.Allinall,theattentiontocurrentandpastAskingsby our churches is most commendable. The Diocese, as always, stands ready to assistchurchesfacedwithunforeseenfinancialdifficulties.AndLaurieBoss,ourFinancialOfficer,isvigilantinanefforttoflaglocalproblemsinthisregardbeforetheybecomemoredifficulttodealwith. Current incomehas for themostpartbeen fairly steadywithpledge income fromAskings,asofJuly31,oncoursetoendtheyearwithinthemid-90%rangeofthebudgetedlevel. These numbers are bolstered by the receipt of $7,574 in Askings owed from thepreviousyear. PledgeincomefromAskingsfor2017isbudgetedtobeabout$48,500lessthan2016,the amount of Askings foregonewhen St.Michael’smoved from “parish” to “specializedmission”status.Andournationalchurchpledgefor2107is$9,400lessthan2016. Withaneyetomaintainingbudgetarystability inthelongerview,BishopRehberghas instituted a financial planning protocol of annual set-asides to assure that sufficientfundingisprovidedfortheevents,conventions,etc.thatoccureverythree,five,ortenormore years. This will accumulate funding over time for such events as EYE, GeneralConvention,Lambeth,andaBishoptransition.|UNITEDTHANKOFFERINGSubmittedby:KateMietus,DiocesanUTOCoordinator The mission of the United Thank Offering is to expand our awareness of theabundanceofGod’sblessingsinourlives,throughdailygratitudeandmonetaryofferings.OnehundredpercentofthemoneycollectedintheUTOBlueBoxesisgivenoutintheformofgrantsformission(humanneeds)orministry(expandingthechurch). ThechurchesintheDioceseofSpokanegave$7889.44duringtheFall2016UnitedThankOfferingIngatheringattheDiocesanConventioninLewiston,Idaho,October,2016.Twenty-eight parishes in the Spokane Diocese participated in the Fall Ingathering. TheSpring2017Ingatheringbroughtincoinsofthanksgivingsandblessingsintheamountof$688.91.TwoparishesintheSpokaneDioceseparticipatedintheSpringIngathering.|WESTCENTRALMISSIONSubmittedby:TheReverendCanonKarenSchomburg InMayof2016agroupofdeterminedvolunteersjoinedmetodothehardworkofa“turn around” project for theWest CentralMission. Over the last yearwe have continued to keep our focus on Dinner Table. EveryWednesday night, year-round, we serve a full sit down dinner to over 70 people in theneighborhood. We send home left overs, hygiene kits, and provide a safe and warmenvironmenttoourfriends.Butwhatwehavedonethatisthemostimpactfulistheslowandintentionalworkofbuildingrelationships. Earlyinourturn-aroundworkforthemission,wedecidedtojoinforceswithSpokaneAlliance. Under the guidance of Carol Krawczyk, Spokane Alliance lead organizer, wereceivedtraininginacommunitylisteningmethodcalled“housemeetings”. WeformedanewteamundertheguidanceofTheRev.WoodyGarvin,tofocusonthiswork,consideringWCEMour“groundzero.”Ourgoalwastolistentoover200people,askingthemtotellustheirhopesanddreamsfortheirWestCentralneighborhood,beingcarefultolistenandnotadvise,hearandnotjudge,bepresentandnotpatronizing.Whatwehavelearnedsofarinourlisteningarethreeconcerns:GenerationalPoverty,Housing,andAddiction.Aswemoveforward,wewill be asking for leadership for local organizations in the neighborhood toorganizeforthecommongood,workingwithSpokaneAlliancetowardsthesegoals. Inaddition,wepartneredwithSt.AndrewsagainthissummertoprovidebreakfastandlunchaswellasanartprogramtotheRiverCityYouthOpsastheyworkedintheareagardens and sold their vegetables at Farmer’s Markets. In addition, this partnershipcontinues to blossom and grow as we continue to build relationships with the leaders,volunteers and staff of RCYO. St. Andrew’s staff and volunteers have been strong andimportant supporters of the mission adding an additional level of service andprofessionalism,especiallyfromTraceyWaring. BuildingrelationshipswiththeSpokaneareachurcheshasbeenanimportantfocus.In particular, volunteers from St. David’s, St. Stephen’s, St. John’s Cathedral, BethanyPresbyterianandthosefromotherareachurcheshavejoinedusonWednesdayevenings.ThosewhocomeonaregularbasishaveexperienceddeepChristianformationinlearningto become Jesus’ “hands and feet on the ground” in West Central. As chaplain, myresponsibilityistoserveboththevolunteersandtheguestswhocometodinner.Walkingwiththosewhohaveneverexperiencedthewidearrayofdiversityandintensepovertyhasbeencentraltomyworkwithvolunteers.Sittingwiththosewhoseliveshavebeenshatteredby drugs, loss of employment, prostitution, a series of bad luck, and mental illness isoverwhelmingworkforthosewhoarenotpreparedtosufferalongwithourneighborsinWestCentral. InthemonthsandyearsaheadIbelieveWCEMwillbeacentralgatheringplaceforthosewhocaredeeplyabouttheWestCentralneighborhoodtheyliveinandarewillingtoworktomakeitaplaceofhope,stabilityandvitality.MyhopeisthatthisworkwillbeamodelforothercongregationsinthisDiocesetofindmeaningfulnetworkedrelationshipsin

What a promise of ministry and mission for those in attendance. That sameweekend was the Province VIII Annual Meeting, hosted this year by the Diocese of LosAngeles.MaryKayFerrell,ChurchPeriodicalClubprovincechair,KateMeitus,DiocesanUTOchair and Evita Krislock Province VIII ECW National Board representative were able toparticipate.MaryKayandEvita,duetotheirleadershiprolesinECWweresenttotheannualmeetingby their supportingaffiliations (CPC,ECWNational). ThisprovidedourDiocesewith a presence and ongoing support of women's ministries as we build our diocesannetwork of Women in Ministries. Working together we can effect a change. WomeninMinistriesplansawinterretreatforthewomenofourDioceseMarch16-18,2018,attheImmaculateHeartRetreatCenter.Watchforfurtherinformationregardingthis event from the Diocese and on our Women in Ministry Facebook page. Triennial2018isfastapproaching.TriennialisagatheringofwomenthroughouttheEpiscopal Church to learn, grow, and network as we discover new ways that may betraditional, tried and true that we hadn't considered, or consider 'out of the box’ andinnovative ways to share our good news. Triennial is held in conjunction with GeneralConvention,scheduledforJuly5-10th,2018inAustinTexas.OurthemeGo!SharetheWordEveryday,Communicamos,EveryWhereisexcitingwhenweconsiderhowthatimpactsus,the Church and theworld. Our Diocese hopes to send four representative fromWiM toexperience this life changing event, one from each region. Registration cost is $475.00.Pleaseconsiderhelpingsponsorawomanfromyourregiontoattend.|YOUTH&YOUNGADULTMINISTRYSubmittedby:JaneGober,MissionerforChristianReligiousEducation So far during 2017 the Youth and Christian Religious Education ministry of theDioceseofSpokanehasofferednurtureandshepherdingfordiocesanyouthministries,campformation and local lifelong formation. Theheart of thisministry is preparation for andofferingyoutheventsforyoungpeoplefromacrossthediocese.Thisministryalsoworkstonetworkourcongregationalformationwithofferingsacrossthechurch,andtomoredeeplyknit together the formationworkof the local churchwith the summerholiness at CampCross.

In the last program year we were able to launch a new senior high youth eventEPISCOBALLwhichbeganinconjunctionwiththeordinationofBishopRehberg.ThefocusofEPISCOBALLisserviceandouryoungcrewwereabletoservewiththeordinationeventsinavarietyofways.In2018theyareaimingtowardaweekendofserviceandfellowshipinYakima. ThehighlightoftheyearwasperhapstakinganamazingcrewofseventeensandtwoadultsandonebishoptotheEpiscopalYouthEventinOklahoma.Wealsohadoneteenonthedesignteam!Allourtravelwentsmoothlyandtheexperiencewaslife-givingforallwhoparticipated. IwanttosharewithyouthisreflectionfromEmilyAsplin,amemberoftheCathedral.

“NeverinallmyyearsasanEpiscopaliandidIthinkIwouldwitnessbishopsfromallover the world dancing their way through a procession. With a thousand otherteenagerssingingaroundmerunningcongalinesalongtheaisles,Ifeltanentirelynewsenseofconnectionwithmyfaithandacomfortinmyspirituality.Ihavealwaysbeenhesitantto“diveinto”abeliefinGodduetoquestionsIstillhadaboutdifferentaspectsofChristianity.EYEgavemethetoolstomoldmyrelationshipwithGodsothatitfilledthecracksleftopenbyskepticism.ItremindedmetokeepquestioningandexploringwhatGodandJesusmeantomeandhowtheyimpactmyeverydaylife.Inonepraxissession(aseminartypeofworkshopeachwithadifferent,faith-basedtopic),welearnedaboutMarshallRosenberg's theoryonnonviolentcommunication. Itblewourminds.We redefined violence and nonviolence and discussed how they influence ourenvironments,ourselves,beliefinheaven,imageofGod,andevenourworldeconomy.Wecameoutofthesessioninawewithacompletelynewviewontheideaofa“lovingGod”andhowwecanlivelovinglyandnonviolentlyinourownlives.

Ontheflighthome,asmybodywasstillrecoveringfromtheOklahomahumidity,Ibegantodigest themassiveamountof informationandexperiences thatmadeup thepastweek.Amidtheexhaustion,Ifeltawarmsenseofwholeness:myfaithfeltrenewed,myintentionsandplansfeltenergized,andIfeltincommunionwiththosefrommyDioceseandfromtheentirechurch.FromHawaiitoMaine,AlaskatoFlorida,FrancetoGuam,I had the opportunity to meet a diverse group of people who were all united by acuriositytodiscovermoreaboutourfaith.SomanyoftheotheryouthItalkedtoagreedthat the love and power in this experience made them unafraid to be Christians,Episcopalians, and people ready towalk in the footsteps of Jesus, spreading love toeveryoneandeverythingweencountered.ItintroducedmetoexcitingphilosophiesonGodandfaithandshowedmetheimmensepowerthattheyouthcanbringtoourchurch- contributing new ideas to our congregations, connecting with other youth duringmeaningfultimesintheirlives,andhelpingenergizeourfaith.EYEwasanincrediblyformativeexperienceforme,andIhopethateverysingleteenagerinourDiocesehastheopportunitytobeasimpactedandinspiredatthenextEYEasIwasthisyear.”
