EXPLANATORY NOTE

1. This Index to Proceedings of the 23rd session of the Economic andSocial Council is intended to offer a bibliographical guide to the discussionand documentation of the meetings. Being a sessional index it does notinclude ad hoc committees meeting between sessions. Documents of standingcommittees whkh have lnet between sessions are, however, included. Theindex consists of the following parts:

Part A: IntroductionThis part includes check Bsts of meetings and a brief description of

the composition of the Council and its committees.

Part B: AgendaThe items on the agenda are listed' in part B, with references to the

relevant subject headings used in part C.

Part C: Subject indexThe subjects dealt with during the sessio~l are arranged alphabetically

in the subject index. In this index will be found, under appropriate subjectheadings, references to the documentation, discussions, and to the dispositionof each item. The agenda item number is indicated in parentheses followingthe subject heading. To facilitate the finding of statements nlade in generaldebate in plenary and committee meetings, names of delegations are notedin parentheses following the meeting number. They are also noted wheneverreferences are made to a subject not scheduled as an agenda item.

Part D: Index to speechesSpeeches by representatives are listed in part D. The Telnarks of the

President of the Council and of chairmen of committees are normally notindexed. However, the speeches of chairmen or rapporteurs of committeesare indexed when they present or explain the reports of their committeesto the Council. The index is arranged in alphabetical order by country,organization or department of the United Nations Secretariat, subdividedby subject discussed and names of speakers, with the indication of themeeting at which the speech was made.

Part E: Numerical list of documentsThis is a list of the documents included In this index, arranged by

document syrabols.

2. Official RecordsAll the summary records of plenary and committee meetings of the

Economic and Social Council first appear in mimeographed form. Summaryrecords of plenary meetings are later printed as separate fascicles in theOfficial Records of the session, whereas summary records of committeemeetings remain in lnimeographed form. Of the other documents, someappear initially as printed Supplements to the Official Records-a factalways indicated in this index-but all the rest are first issued in mimeo­graphed fonn. Most of them are subsequently printed in the Annexes tothe Official Records, where they are grouped into fascicles according toagenda item numbers. The resolutions adopted by the Council, which arefirst issued in mimeographed form, are collected in the printed SupplementNo. 1 to the Official Records of the session.

After their re-publication in the Official Records, the provisional docu­Inents described above are no longer available in their minleographed form.
