Message

Fall 2020

Ann Booth

Region 13 RVP

Hello to all,

Well 2020 has certainly turned out to be a very, very different year for all. It was tru-

ly sad to have cancelled the AIS Spring 2020 convention and hopefully our Fall 2020

meeting in Oregon City, sponsored by OTIS, will still be held.

I would like to take this opportunity to say it has been my pleasure to serve as your

RVP for the past three years and be assured knowing you are in good hands with

John Ludi, your new RVP.

Take care and hopefully we will see you at the fall meeting. Happy irising!!!

Respectfully

Region 13

Fall Meeting

CANCELLED

It is our great regret that there are just too many unknowns with the state restrictions

to go forward. We are cancelling the Fall Region 13 Meeting. We are hoping that we can

work it out to just move it forward a year and do the meeting in 2021. We will update you

as soon as we know for sure. Dennis Muchmore has received only three registrations so

far and he has not cashed the checks so it will be easy to refund those to the people who sent

them in.

Hello from afar everyone! I miss getting to see eve-

ryone at our gatherings, but am more interested that I get to

see your faces again!! I have ventured out with Rita in

May to go to Rod Mendenhall's gardens to see all his SDB

and early Iris. That was a fun day! I have also ventured up

to Cascadia Iris Gardens in April, May and June to admire

how awesome their gardens are looking. I just love going

there to see what is new and what "GOOD TROUBLE" I

can cause! :)

Other than that, I went to visit South Dakota the second week in June and on my way

there, I stopped in Billings, MT to visit my friends Bob and Debbie Wicks. Of course, we

had to go admire 3 great Iris gardens: Eagle Ridge Iris Gardens; Muriel's Iris Garden

and Tina and Daughters Iris Garden. All were very beautiful!! My sisters gardens were gor-

geous, every morning we checked to see what was newly opened. SO fun! I stopped on the

way back from S. Dakota at Muriel's because she had an Iris called "Black Hills Gold" that I

insisted my sister had to have! I ordered 20 Iris for her, hahahahahaha! Sometimes, she

doesn't like me, but when they bloom she loves me!! I went back to the Black Hills again for

my Step dad's 87th bday on July 23rd. This time on my way back to Seattle, I delivered 10

Historic and French Iris to Delane Langton at Eagle Ridge Iris Gardens that he wanted from

my sister. I don't know what she traded him for. She is way crazier than I am, I think she is

up to 600-700 different Iris in her garden! More grass has to go to make room for more Iris

beds! I so love feeding her addiction! It has become a bit sadistical on my part!! hahahaha-

ha More necessary "GOOD TROUBLE"!!!

Love you all and miss you!!

IN MEMORANDUM: LORRAINE C.MILLER

LORRAINE C. MILLER of Quincy WA, a long time member of AIS and CBIS, passed

peacefully into the next life February 8, 2020. She was born in Lodi CA on December 20,

1921, married Henry Miller in 1939, and moved to Quincy in 1954 to farm land that was

part of her father's homestead. (The Reiman House and Museum, located next to the

Quincy cemetery is part of Lorraine's heritage.)

With her positive attitude and a bit of German stubbornness, Lorraine persevered through

several hardships in her 98 years. One was being an early settler in the Columbia Basin

Irrigation Project where previously barren land was being cultivated so blowing dust was

always seeping into the house. It took some time for the town to acquire amenities for

small town living and new schools to be built. Their children's ages ranged from one and

a half to fourteen when they made the move to Quincy. Another hardship was the trauma

of the sudden and unexpected death of her husband, Hank in 1973. Lorraine became a

young widow at age 51 and was not prepared for being on her own. The sons immediate-

ly stepped in to take over operation of the farm, but found the income from the farm

wouldn't be adequate for their two families and Lorraine. Lorraine soon went to work for

the School District.

After retiring at age 66, Lorraine started her small business, LORRAINE'S IRIS PATCH.

(With a nice catalog, too.) Those of you who attended the 2005 Spring Regional, hosted

by CBIS, will remember visiting her beautiful home gardens, her well kept commercial

garden and the guest iris beds. When she had to close her commercial garden, Elm recalls

digging and preparing Lorraine's collectable antique Arilbreds to be sent to the Aril Socie-

ty for their sale. Like many of us, she could never have enough irises. She was able to

have a handful of iris varieties growing outside her window during her later years while

living in a care facility in Quincy.

Lorraine had kept busy as the children were growing up; - PTA, 4-H, Sunday School,

church and the local garden club. In the early '70s she joined CBIS and was the Vice

President of the club in 1974, holding other various office positions until 2013, when she

resigned as secretary after a stroke made her speech incoherent. She remained active

with the club into 2018 when she had another more debilitating stroke. Before her stokes

she enjoyed attending Region 13 meetings and Spring Tours, She also went to several AIS

National Meetings - Denver, Dallas, Fresno, and of course, those held in our region.

We lost a great mentor to all in CBIS. I'll remember Lorraine as a classy lady, (Always

dressed to the nines....you know, well co-ordinate outfits, matching shoes and several

pieces of jewelry.)

Jackie "Jack" Boushay Obituary

Edited by Phyllis Barnett with a few personal notes by Elm Jensen

"Jack" Boushay, 81, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2020, at his home in Cashmere WA.

He was born on July 9, 1938 in Sunnyslope WA, the son of Cora Dale (Anderson) and Henry

Alfred Boushay. Being a bit rebellious as a teenager, Jack left school early and joined the U.S.

Navy. He served his four years in Georgia, returned to Wenatchee where he met his future

wife, (Rose) Lynn Sever. They married on his birthday in 1961. In 1965 they bought a house

in Cashmere and have lived on the same property ever since.

Jack worked for the Wenatchee School District as a maintenance engineer. He proudly attained

his GED after retirement, when he also took drafting and CAD classes. Jack was a self-taught

computer enthusiast. Before computers, Jack had several other interests. He had a beautiful

iris "show garden" that he spent many spring and summer days tending to. He also collected

stamps from all over the world and even traded iris for stamps. Jack and Lynn enjoyed square

dancing and bowling in their younger years. He also loved golf, until his back would not allow.

Family was the most important thing to him. He became a grandpa in 2006. A trip abroad was

made when Lila was born in Vienna, Austria, to their daughter Teresa.

Sadly, Jack succumbed to an unforeseen and short battle with melanoma, with wife, and two

daughters (Lisa Boushay-Ownby (Ray) of Moses Lake and Teresa Boushay of Cashmere), by

his side. He, also, leaves behind the grandaughter, Lila Anais Boushay of Cashmere and a sis-

ter, Wanda Wertz (Rich) of Omak WA, as well as extended family.

Elm Jenson, who personally knew Jack and Lynn , adds this: When I would receive his cata-

logs, they came from J and J Gardens. He called it "Jack and Jesus' Gardens". Some of his in-

tros bore religious names or phrases. Jack was an AIS Judge. He introduced 85 irises in all....6

MDBs, 30 SDBs, 5 IBs, 1 MTB, 6 BBs, and 37 TBs. His iris won 21 H. M. awards, 4 A. M.

awards and in 1980 Jack's I.B., 'Apple Blossom Pink', won the Sass Award. When his daugh-

ter, Lisa, was young she loved being in the iris garden with her dad and made some crosses of

her own. At least one, of which, was introduced. Elm remembers Jack introducing him to Gor-

don Plough, another well known local hybridizer of that time period.

No one knows why years ago Jack suddenly gave up hybridizing and socializing with his iris

peers and fellow hybridizers, but he should be remembered for his award winning iris contribu-

tions to the "iris world".

Outward Bound By Will Plotner

I had hoped to see all of you at the Fall Region 13 meeting hosted by

the OTIS club. Unfortunately with the Covid 19’s continuing persis-

tence and growth, it was not possible to put more than 10 people to-

gether in one place and be able to feed them even a lunch. We will

look forward to the 2021 year and hopefully this infection will be gone.

Please make a note to yourself to see as many SDB’s as you can and

vote the Lankow ballot next year. It is Region 13’s only regional award

Be safe and take care of yourselves

Will P. S. We may have some extra news later on as we did not elect our new officers and

new director as we usually do at our Fall meeting. The RVP and ARVP are working on

this problem with our presidents. The results will be published in the Spring issue as we

did not get this information in a timely manor for this issue.
