Dear Friends,

It has been a real delight over the lastfew days to see so many children outand about on their way to school orcoming home again and the youngerones, at any rate, looking cheerfuland enthusiastic. Along with thecontinuing success of the vaccinerollout, the reopening of schools hasraised many spirits.

Having said that, I do not underestimate the immense strain that wehave been under during the last twelve months or the feelings ofweariness and worse that many are currentlyenduring. For those who have had to cope withrelationship breakdown, job insecurity, isolation, illness or bereavement, whether related to thepandemic or not, the trauma will have been deep.Even those who have managed to negotiatelockdown restrictions comfortably have had their livesdisrupted in one way or another. As we readjust to alife which is hopefully returning to something likenormal, there will need to be a season of mourningfor all that has been lost over the last year.

It’s in that context that I want to speak about Easter joy. At the time ofwriting, it looks as though it will be safe to celebrate Easter back inchurch, albeit with the same precautions that were in place beforelockdown. Plans are being made for a service of Holy Communion inchurch and a Family Service in the church hall to runconcurrently on Easter Sunday morning. Our celebration willbe real although muted on account of what we are unable todo, namely gather in numbers, greet each other physically, sing exuberantly. After all that has been experienced over thepast year and referred to above, there may well be a sadnesstoo. It’s all the more important, then, to emphasise that reality is notdetermined by whatever we may be feeling. Christ is still risen. We havecause to celebrate even if our feelings say otherwise.

For some that celebrationwill involve attending publicworship or maybe justvisiting the church gardenand placing flowers in thecross on the lawn. Forothers wisdom dictatescontinued discretion andcelebration will take place athome – floral decorations, chocolate eggs, quiet prayerand worship online, or withthe TV or radio, will be theorder of the day. But it willbe important to make aneffort to mark the day as oneof celebration.

St Paul’s Letter to thePhilippians is often referredto as “the epistle of joy”. Thewords "joy" and "rejoice" are

used sixteen times in the course of the letter. Perhaps surprisingly, theword “rejoice” occurs several times as a command and Paul practised

what he preached; he speaksof his own joy in spite of beingheld in prison. In spite of hiscircumstances, he holds ontothe bigger picture shaped bybelief in the one who for oursake “humbled himself bybecoming obedient to death…on a cross” but is now exalted“to the highest place” and given“the name that is above everyname” (Philippians 2.8-9).

In the online service forMothering Sunday, I recalledhow at the Last Supper Jesusprepared his disciples for thegrief and subsequent joy theywould experience at his deathand then his resurrection, byusing the powerful images oflabour and childbirth: “A woman giving birth to a child has pain becauseher time has come; but when her baby is born, she forgets the anguishbecause of her joy that a child is born into the world.” (John 16.21). Painand distress may seem overwhelming and never ending but, as the wiseman once said, “This too shall pass”. Such a conviction may seem likeblind optimism at the time.

Nevertheless, we hold onto the faithfulness of God demonstrated byraising Jesus to glorious life from the devastation of his death. ThisEaster the pandemic will not have passed, we may be feeling anxious, depressed or just plain numbed but we can and should still rejoice and

celebrate as we are able and, trusting inGod, hope for better days to come.

Yours sincerely,

Robert

Robert reflects on this year's LentcourseThis year’s Lent Course fromUSPG “For Such a Time as This”,focusing on environmental issues, has been proving a success so farat St Oswald’s. Numbers takingpart have definitely been up onprevious years – maybe it hashelped that using Zoom hasenabled participants to attend fromthe comfort of their homes! Wehave been challenged by theissues raised in the coursebooklet, benefitted from members’knowledge and perspective and

simply enjoyed the fellowship with one another. Perhaps weshould consider continuing online midweek discussion groups? We have already achieved the Eco Church Bronze Award butthere is much more to do. I hope that there will be some actionswe can take as a result of following the course. If you have ideasabout how as a church we can benefit the environment, pleasecontact Brian Thomson ([email protected]) orJane Brading who are convening a task group on this issue onbehalf of the PCC.

This magazine issue covers Good Friday, Easter, Ascension andPentecost, and my choice of hymn relates to the latter, when thedisciples received the Holy Spirit:

Come down, O Love divine, seek thou this soul of mine,And visit it with thine own ardour glowing;O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear,And kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing.

This is a translation of a poem originally written in Italian about 600years ago. The writer was Bianco da Siena (c. 1350 – 1434). Little isknown of him: born in Tuscany he became an apprentice in the Sienawool trade before joining a monastery. He died in Venice. The poemwas forgotten until the mid -19th century when it came to the notice of DrRichard Littledale (1833-1890), a High Church vicar who had parishes inNorwich and London. He translated four of the verses into English toproduce the hymn we have today.

The hymn is a prayer for the Holy Spirit to enter our lives. The HolySpirit is referred to as Love Divine or Comforter: the latter is from John15:26 (AV). The Spirit turns earthly passions to ashes and its lightilluminates our path. Its fruits are to be holy charity and lowliness.

It was to be another half-century or so before Littledale’s translationappeared in any major hymn book. In 1906 it was included in the firstEnglish Hymnal. This book’s musical editor was the composer RalphVaughan Williams (1872-1958) who, in the absence of a satisfactoryexisting tune, and rather than adapting as he usually did a traditional folktune, provided one of his own. He called it Down Ampney after his birthplace in Gloucestershire.

Thanks largely to the lovely words and the well-matched tune, the hymnhas become very popular and can certainly be sung at any time of thechurch’s year.

Here is the last verse –

And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long,Shall far outpass the power of human telling; For none can guess its grace, till he become the placeWherein the Holy Spirit makes his dwelling.

A CROXLEY RAMBLER IN SOUTH OXHEYBrian Thomson - 23 March 2021

For various reasons, including the lockdown restrictions, I have notmanaged much rambling of note recently. But I did wander aroundSouth Oxhey last week. It was an important occasion. As Chair of

ASCEND I was due to meet our newCEO, Tiffany Richards, for the firsttime face to face. She replacesChristine Wyard who has runASCEND for the past 18 years, so thisis a big moment for the charity. Theidea was to walk around the centre ofSouth Oxhey to get a sense of thearea.

When I arrived at ASCEND’s Step-Upcentre in Oxhey Drive, there was asmall queue of people with shoppingbags outside the door. ASCEND ishosting an informal food bank.Members of the local community havebeen donating food for those who arestruggling with the impact of theOxhey Drive

covid lockdowns. It hasbeen well used.

Oxhey Drive is a goodplace to take stock of thearea. The avenue ofhornbeams that wasplanted when the townwas laid out in the 1950sare now mature andbeautiful. Across theroad are classic 1950sCouncil-style red brick

flats and houses. But behind the Step-Up building is a wood that hasbeen there for centuries with bluebell leaves shooting from thewoodland floor and trees that were pollarded when this was part of theBlackwell family estate.

Then just 100 yards away is a large construction site. The old towncentre has been flattened and is being replaced by new shops, apartments and houses. The 1950s buildings had become run down.Living conditions were poor and the area was one of the most deprivedin the county. Not having the funds to rehabilitate the area, ThreeRivers Council brought in a developer, Countryside Properties, torebuild. It meant that the residents had to move elsewhere. Thedevelopment is controversial. Few of the local businesses can affordthe higher rents being charged for the new shops and few local peoplecan afford to live there either. So it is not just the urban landscape thatis changing but the social fabric too.

We began our walk past the wood and across Prestwick Road toASCEND’s gardening project, Dig Deep. This is an old Councilallotment which had been abandoned. It has been rehabilitated byASCEND volunteers to create a splendid outdoor learning space. Wewere greeted at the entrance by a colourful show of daffodils andpolyanthus. Vegetable beds have been prepared for planting and theplace is getting ready to open for courses as soon as lockdownrestrictions permit. I noticed some frogspawn in one of the small nature

ASCEND'S Dig Deep project

ponds and the whole areawas surrounded by trees inblossom.

Back on Prestwick Road wepassed the hoardings behindwhich the foundations for theproposed Lidl supermarkethave been laid. It is due forcompletion next year.Meanwhile, the first phases ofthe redevelopment have beencompleted. Most of the newshops in Station Approach areoccupied and the whole areais dominated by the tall flatson Prestwick Road. Manynew residents have arrived.

We walked to All Saints’ Church, now 20 years old, a modern buildingon a historic site. Next to the church is the old chapel built in 1612 forSir James Altham who lived at Oxhey Place. The big house has gone

but the cedar tree that was on the houselawn is still growing happily beside AllSaints’. Normally ASCEND uses theChurch Centre as offices for staff, classrooms for courses and as a place tomeet clients and volunteers. Of course, access to the church building has beenvery restricted for the last year butASCEND’s staff and tutors have beenvery inventive. It has taken a lot of workbut many activities have been movedonline so that clients continue to benefit.Nevertheless, everyone will be pleasedwhen we can get back to normal and seepeople face to face.

BOOK REVIEW

Helen McAlpine

I've just finished "Living HisStory" by Hannah Steele. Ithink that it's a very goodread - very accessible andvery thought provoking. And there are lots of ideasabout how we talk topeople. Ideas that givegreater confidence inwitnessing to people wemeet, befriend and developtrust with - in conversation,in the way we live and theexample we show others. It's not radical but very clearin offering encouragementto the reader personally and

churches more generally to offer "belonging" to individuals, whichcan then provide opportunities to share the Good News. And it'sgood to look at this in the context of what we actually have andcan develop, rather than what we don't have (and might betempted to try to create badly).I think this is one of the very few Lent books that I might go backand read again once I've given it a chance to percolate a bit -highly recommended by me.Thanks Robert very much for your recommendation.

Christian Solidarity Worldwide. CSW's vision is a world free fromreligious persecution, where everyone can practise a religion or belief oftheir choice. CSW works to document abuses, trains advocates forjustice and encourages policy-makers to stand up for freedom ofreligious belief. CSW helps supporters to encourage victims of abuse, campaign and pray for change.

Campaign update 25 Mar 2021

CSW's campaign to end Uyghur forced labour in China’s XinjiangUyghur Autonomous Region – saw a hugely encouragingbreakthrough.CSW is delighted to report that, in January, Marks & Spencer publiclysigned the brand commitment, providing assurances to its customersthat its products will not be linked to the abuses of Uyghurs – apredominantly Muslim ethnic group.

They are the first top-tier global retailer to make its commitment publicand this was thanks in no small part to your campaigning and prayers. We thank God.

Our strategy, as part of the Coalition to End Uyghur Forced Labour, is tocreate a domino effect so that as more brands sign, it becomesuntenable for others not to. Money talks, and CSW believes that ifenough brands refuse to buy cotton from the Uyghur region, this willforce the Chinese government to stop subjecting Uyghur people toforced labour. For CSW campaign details see www.csw.org.uk/campaigns.htm

Eco-tips for St Oswald’sJane Brading

What can I do to help the environment?

Once services in church resume, if you are able to walk or cycle tochurch instead of coming by car, please try to do so whenever possible. In addition to being good for you, it is good for the environment as itreduces both pollution and harmfulgreenhouses gases.

St Alban’s Diocese are encouraging us towalk to church as a practical demonstrationof concern for our environment and, inparticular, to do so on Walk to ChurchSunday which will be on 9th May.

What are we doing as a Church to help the environment?

As reported previously, St Oswald’s has achieved a bronze Eco Churchaward in the scheme run by A Rocha to help churches care for creation.A group has now been formed to build on this encouraging start and takeforward our work to become more sustainable as a church. If you haveany suggestions you would like us to consider, please contact BrianThomson or Jane Brading.

Plastic-Less Living

Reduce the single-use plastics in your life – to reduce the actions whichdamage God’s Creation.

Here are 5 easy steps to help you consider and reduce the single-useplastics in your life.

1. Give up disposable cups - 7 million plastic lined disposable cups areused in the UK every day. A reusable cup not only saves waste butsaves money too with many coffee shops offering discounts.

2. Bring your own reusable bags. Plastic bags and produce bags inparticular are often used for minutes before being discarded. Mostplastic bags are not recycled, ending up in landfills.

3. Avoid overpackaged foods. Stay clear of the three tomatoes sittingon a Styrofoam tray and covered in plastic cellophane.Where you can buy in bulk re-use plastic containers – for example takeyour own for buying meat, fish or cheese. [Or try the Green Stores inNew Road.]

4. Look around your bathroom and see what plastics you canreplace. Do you have plastic bottles sitting around your shower? Find a

Did you know that ……….by 2050 we couldhave more plastic than fish (by weight) in the sea. Over 8.3

billion tonnes of plastic have been produced since the 1950s.That’s enough plastic to cover every inch of the UK ankle-deep morethan ten times over. Just 9% was recycled.

‘To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain andrenew the life of the earth’

Page 21: of St. Oswald’s Church Croxley Green

21

brand you like and try and get it in bulk. If it's not available in bulk – askthe manufacturer to offer it. Check your toiletries don’t containmicrobeads (avoid anything that lists polyethylene as an ingredient). Tryusing bar soap instead of liquid soap.

5. Buy once and buy well. Choose natural fibres. By investing inquality you are minimising the demand for cheap items that end up inlandfill. When buying new clothes look for organic cotton, wool, andother natural fibres. Synthetic fabrics createmicrofibre pollution when washed.

Make your voice heard: Share what you are doing with friends, familyand community. Ask your MP what they are doing to tackle single useplastics. Join the UN’s Clean Seas campaign and Greenpeace’s PlasticPledge. Call on supermarkets for a Plastic Free Aisle.

We hope these tips have made you more aware of your plastic use andhelped you create some lasting changes.
