Salt for the Week
“If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.” (Ps 95) The psalm for this weekend is usually
associated with Lent, but has a message good for every day and every season! “Hearing” God’s voice sounds like an easy concept… But, if you’re a parent, you totally understand the feeling when a child doesn’t listen to you! Really hearing results in action, and when there’s no action, we assume there’s no listening. Hardened hearts have a difficult time listening. Hard hearts and deaf ears rarely will translate into changed lives. Our world can contribute to that hardness with too much information, too many choices, too many voices and too little time for consideration. Hopefully one of your goals for the year is more time to listen in prayer. Doing our favorite devotions, readings, prayers and novenas, rosaries and Scriptural meditations, are rich sources for prayer. But one of the most powerful ones is silence. (Remember “listen” and “silent” are the same letters!) Will you hear his voice today?
Reflection Questions
for this Week’s Scriptures 1. What are your sources of anxiety? How do
you deal with this in your life? 2. What distracts you from your spiritual
journey? What can you do to help lessen those distractions?
3. The demons in the Gospel (Mk1:21-28) knew who Jesus was and were afraid of his authority. Are you willing to submit to Jesus’ authority in your life? What might that look like? How might you change if you did?
4. Have you tried taking your anxiety to prayer? Realize that Jesus is with you in your anxiety. Ask him for freedom and peace in the midst of your struggles.
5. Do you get distracted in your prayer? Instead of fighting it, acknowledge your distraction and offer it to the Lord, and let it go. Many times whatever is our distraction is something for which we need to pray.
6. Demons can be addictions of eating or drinking or drugs. They can be low self-esteem, shopping, phone or internet usage- anything which you find is out of control. Are you willing….

Praying For—Because of the length of our prayer list, we find it necessary to make some changes. Currently, all names included in the Bulletin are also included in the intercessions at Mass. As a reminder, the only names that will be read at Mass are those people who have current critical health issues or have just been added to the prayer list and they will be included for three weeks. Those with continuing, but not acute, issues will remain on the Bulletin list. We ask that you inform us when someone can be removed from either list.
Online Masses and Radio Broadcasts… What churches (except those in a “big city”) would have ever considered a regular presence in the media? As with many other changes, the pandemic
forced us to look at evangelization in new ways. Due to some very talented staff members (Lori Keppler, Janine Berns and John Uhal) we were able to pivot pretty quickly to provide new opportunities for weekend worship here in the Emmaus Pastorate. Hours of research and set-up, trial and error and consultation with other sources has yielded wonderful opportunities spanning well beyond our five parishes. Part of the progression was moving from more temporary set-ups which carried their own technical issues, to more standard and secure installations. The live-streaming, which many of you have enjoyed, initially started at Saint Mark parish. Much was learned over those weeks and months. Recently, Saint Mary has come online and is now able to allow their parishioners to participate in their own parish. Saint Joseph is next in acquiring equipment to provide those services as well. In this way, each and every weekend Mass will be able to be accessed, as well as weddings and funerals. Bereaved families have been especially appreciative of the chance their distant relatives have in being “present” for funerals of loved ones. In addition, Deanne Wulfekuhle has been trained to operate the live-streaming and Jake Moellers is next in line for Saint Mary. Our audio recording of the Saturday night Mass is sent to KMCH radio in Manchester for broadcast on Sunday mornings at 11:00 a.m. We are able to tell where (and how long) people participate in the online broadcasts and have heard from many different parts of the country, as well as outside of the U.S.! Besides being a welcome asset to our local parishes and homebound, we are reaching people who may never come to one of our churches, but we are sharing the gospel of Jesus with them all the same. We are most grateful to those whose technical skills make this possible. If you would like to help support this part of our pastorate ministry, please call St. Mark office (563-928-7200.)

TOWN HALLS UPDATE! Sacred Heart’s Town Hall meeting was held this past Saturday, January 23, and was well attended. The ideas behind the Town Halls are: * Transparency in sharing parish data around
Sacramental statistics, attendance, and financial reporting.
* Pastoral Council updates regarding three to five year goals
* Opportunities for feedback from parishioners about what is going well, and a chance to voice any concerns or questions to parish leadership.
* A chance to see and speak in person with Pastoral Council members.
This year as a “COVID-19” solution, the meetings are held immediately following a weekend Mass. The dates for the remaining Town Hall meetings are listed below. Please do your best to include these important gatherings in your weekend schedule. Thanks to all who have participated so far! In parishes who have the option, we will livestream the presentation part of the meeting. Check with your Pastoral Council chair person for further questions.
