Piburger See The Piburger See is not only the best protected lake in Tyrol (natural monu-ment, landscape protection area, lake protection area), it is also one of the most researched.
Almost 40% of the water flow into the lake takes place underground.
The outflow was directed into an un-derground channel in the 19th centurywhich lowered the lake level by approx. 1.5 m.
This is the warmest lake in Tyrolreaching up to 24C.

10 WATER WALKS
.WATER IN THE TZTAL VALLEY
Water, the element which hasshaped the tztal valley.
The glaciers are melted by the sun-shine, releasing freshwater whichfeeds into the meadows and the tzta-ler Ache river which winds its wayalong the 65 km long valley. The tzta-ler Ache catchment area extends over893 km with an elevation from 700 to3,774 m. This glacial meltwater fills thereservoir used by the local populationand provides a supply of drinking water.
Glaciers store of the worldsfreshwater reserves and therefore represent the biggest natural waterstorage in the world.
In 1770, the advancing ice dammedmany of the big lakes here which triggered catastrophic flooding acrossthe entire tztal and Inntal regionswhen they burst their banks. This inher ent danger of nature has increa-singly led people to treat nature withcare as well as promoting research intoglaciers.
But the wide range of water present inthe tztal valley is not just of interestto scientists. The tztal glaciers are aleisure area for locals and tourists alike. These icy natural wonders also serveas a hiking and skiing area. The glacialmeltwater enables various action-packed activities such as rafting, whitewater adventures and much more.
Quality seal
Some of the family-friendly circularroutes have been labelled as premiumtrails by the German Hiking Institute.
The criteria for receiving the Germanhiking seal are:
A top quality experience Easy walking Attractive trails Pleasant surface coverings Very well marked footpaths

Waalweg Theme Trails In the past, the so-called "Waal" water trails were man-made irrigation ditches for providing the Alpine fields and pastures with enough water. Still today, some of them are used by the local farmers. For our ancestors these "Waalweg" trails were essential for cultivating their meadows and fields.

31UMHAUSEN-NIEDERTHAI
The towns are just as picturesque asthe landscape. Umhausen with its various hamlets (Tumpen, Kfels andFarst) is a fantastic hiking area in sum-mer and a starting point for numeroushigh Alpine tours. The special attractionhere is the Stuibenfall waterfall wherethe 159 m high mass of water can beviewed from 5 platforms, some veryexposed in places! A suspensionbridge crosses the waterfall at 1,500 mfrom which the small and idyllic townof Niederthai can be accessed. The hiking area here is truly exemplary andcharacterised by pure peace and quiet.
