David Purdue is appointed Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals

I am very pleased to announce that David Purdue has now formally taken up the post of Executive Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals, following a six-year tenure as the organisation’s Chief Operating Officer. An integral role at the Trust, the Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals provides clear leadership to clinical staff, overseeing the development and delivery of outstanding patient care, while overseeing the organisation’s strategies for Quality, Patient Experience, Research and Development and Infection Prevention and Control.

With almost 30 years of experience within the NHS, David qualified from the Nottingham School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse in 1990, working initially within cardiology at Queen’s Medical Centre and before specialising in coronary care at City Hospital. Following a second spell at Queen’s, the local resident set up a number of cardiac nurse-led services before going on to work at the NHS Modernisation Agency.

After returning to a patient-facing position in 2004, leading the specialities of Cardiothoracics and Emergency Medicine, David joined what was then Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in October 2008 as Divisional Nurse Manager for Medicine, before rising to the position of Chief Operating Officer in July 2013.

A passionate patient advocate, David is returning to clinical practice and will oversee the Trust’s approach to safety and quality, while supporting the organisation’s over 2,000 nurses, midwives and allied health professionals.

Given his previous commitment to the Trust, I believe David will be an extremely talented, committed and hardworking Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals. David is one of our most prominent and effective leaders, and we have benefited from his insights and expertise for a number of years. I believe he will apply the same rigour and candour to his new role and I look forward to the innovations he, and his team, will bring to this particular area of the organisation.

In addition to the role of Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals role David will retain his position as Deputy Chief Executive.

The Clinical Portal 2.0 arrives 31 October Introduced in early 2018, the Clinical Portal brings together a number of our digital systems into one, easy-to-use dashboard.

Throughout the past few months, the IT Programmes and Development Team have been listening to user-feedback in order to develop a new version of the system. Clinical Portal 2.0 includes access to CaMIS eReferrals, in addition to existing functionality but with a significantly improved user-experience, faster loading times and a better user interface.

The Clinical Portal forms phase one of the Electronic Patient Records project, amalgamating several systems that clinicians frequently use on the wards onto one easy to read dashboard.

This will enable clinicians to securely search for a patient on the portal, which will return an overview of their details from various systems without having to log in to each one separately. There will also be an option to input information, creating digital patient notes.

Since its introduction in 2018, the portal has seen 3,540 users, with over 240,864 patient searches and 789,077 pages accessed and just last month had its busiest ever day recorded with hundreds of concurrent users and over 4,000 pages viewed.

When 2.0 rolls-out in late October, the team intend to increase the number of staff with access to the portal, with administration and other support staff able to log in and make use of the intuitive digital service. Information on how to do this will be shared nearer to the go-live date.

For current users of the system, nothing will change and log in credentials will remain the same. The older version of the portal will continue to be accessible for a period of time, however the team are confident that the new-look system will be prove to be an immediate success with clinicians.

The Clinical Portal belongs to the DBTH Digital Transformation programme of work, and alongside Hospital@ and eObservation, will help us to improve

care and enable quicker and more informed decision making. You can find more information about Digital Transformation on the Hive here:

https://extranet.dbth.nhs.uk/dbth-digital-transformation/

We will update you on all things Clinical Portal in the coming weeks and months and we want to thank staff in advance for their support in making the launch of 2.0 a success.

AAA screening picks up large aneurysmAccepting an invitation to attend Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) screening has proven to be a life-saving decision for one Sheffield resident. Paul Scholey, from Sheffield, received his invitation in the post in February, just before he turned 65. He attended even though felt fit and well and was shocked to be told at his appointment that he had a large aneurysm and was urgently referred for surgery. Read Paul’s story here.

Medical students join DBTH

Pictured are some of our wonderful LICP 1 medical students with GP tutors and Medical Education Team. We have 58 students on site at the minute. Please welcome them to your area and offer them the benefit of your wisdom. If anyone is interested in becoming involved with our placement to provide education please get in contact with us at Medical Education.

On 1 September, DBTH launched its 24-hour emergency endoscopy service.

Led by gastroenterologists, there is additional input to the service from endoscopy nursing staff, anaesthetic and theatre staff to ensure the service runs smoothly, 24/7.

The majority of patients will have their procedure during normal working hours and the 24-hour ser-vice will support timely resusciation and escalation. There is also a trust protocol for patients presenting with gastrointestinal bleeding.

During office hours referrals should be forwarded to endoscopy department as soon as possible.

The team would like to thank everyone for their support and for helping to make this service a reality. More information is available here.

Blood transfusion resourcesThere is now a pre-administration bedside check animation video that can be accessed here. This is an extremely useful tool for all staff that are involved in administering blood products so please give it a watch.

The 2018 SHOT (Serious Hazards of Transfusion) report was released in July this year. It focuses heavily on considering human factors when investigating incidents as opposed to blaming individuals.

There is another video available here for you to consider when implementing incident reports.

If you have any issues regarding any aspect of blood transfusion call Emma Richards on 642574.

With the DrDoctor system, our patients can keep track of their clinical appointments and access service specific information.

For this to happen, we will need to have either their email address or current mobile number. Please help by letting patients know about this and asking them to supply these details to the reception desk of any service, or to their GP practice.

Attend the AMM DBTH's Annual Members' Meeting will be on Thursday 26 September, 4pm at the Keepmoat Stadium in Doncaster.

The formal meeting will begin at 5pm and feature presentations of the Trust's Annual Report and Accounts. There will also be an opportunity to hear from the exec team and governors, as well as time to ask questions.

You can register your attendance here.

Be aware of Counterfeit Currency Please be aware there is a batch of fake £20 notes in circulation particularly in Thorne, Moorends, Dunscroft and Stainforth. If you handle cash, please check the bank notes.

ESR Manager Self Service: Smart cards ESR Manager Self Service will go live on 8 October 2019. From this date, managers will require access to a working smart card in order to get on the system and make changes to their staff. One way of getting this sorted is to attend the Manager Self Service training, the schedule of which can be found here.

Is your phone number up to date? The internal phone directory is a useful tool that can help you find the contact details for without having to join the Switchboard queue. However, for the directory to be as effective as possible, we need to make sure that everyone has an up-to-date extension allocated to them. As a member of staff, you can actually edit your own directory information, so that everyone knows how to get in touch with you.

Simply follow the steps in this guide (Section 5).

World Patient Safety Day

17September

In Learning Rooms 1 & 2 Education Centre, DRI.

Over 100 clinicians at the Trust marked the very first World Safety Day (17 September) with a series of informative workshops, lectures and other learning opportunities.Coordinated globally by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the event’s core message is to ask hospital and healthcare workers to speak up for patient safety, improving practice wherever possible and committing to reducing avoidable harm within clinical settings. To show international solidarity with this message, cities around the world will light

up monuments in orange colour to show their commitment to safety of patients. This includes the Jet d’Eau in Geneva, the Pyramids in Cairo, the Kuala Lumpur Tower, The Royal Opera House in Muscat and the Zakim bridge in Boston among others.

To mark the occasion locally, our nurses and doctors have hosted their very own World Patient Safety Day event. The half-day session featured discussions from the organisation’s Safeguarding, Falls Prevention, Infection Prevention and Control, Skin Integrity and Medicines Management teams, to name just a few, a spotlight on sepsis management as well as sharing an engaging patient story filmed locally and screened for colleagues offering crucial insights and learning for those in attendance.

Patient safety is a priority for the Trust and we are pleased to say that we have made excellent strides in this particular area throughout the past six years. This includes record-low infection rates, with the Trust soon (fingers-crossed!) to register 700 days without incidence of hospital-acquired MRSA, as well as 40.2% decrease in the number of serious incidents reported and a number of improvements implemented such as increasing visiting times, better meal-time processes on wards and an emphasis on ensuring services are as quiet as can be while patients are sleeping.

David Purdue, Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals and Deputy Chief Executive, said: “Ensuring we are committed to patient safety helps us to avoid unintended or unexpected harm for those in our care. As a Trust, we are utterly dedicated to minimising patient safety incidents, as well as drive improvements to ensure we provide the highest quality care and treatment.

“Events such as World Patient Safety Day offer us the opportunity to come together, share best practice, learn from challenging and, ultimately, grow as an organisation. It is our vision to be the safest Trust in England, outstanding in all that we do, and I believe today was another step towards this direction.”

From 1 April 2018 to 31 March 2019, we cared for approximately 123,200 inpatients, 472,000 outpatients and delivered more than 4,700 babies. The Trust will be hosting its next patient safety event in early 2020, with a special guest speaker and further opportunities to share best practice for patient care and safety.
