October 2011

This month our running team participated in the Lupus Run at La Mirada regional park. Our four girls trained hard and were among the top ten girls to reach the finish line. We were also very fortunate this month to have a parent volunteer come in and teach our kids how to make friendship bracelets. All the materials for the bracelets were donated by our YAL parents. In the middle of the month our kids all participated in a YAL clean up for our community service. The kids were all given a specific task during the clean up. The goal was to encourage our mentees to take pride in their facility.

Grab a hot cup of Coco and a warm blanket and a book and most of us are content, but this winter, many will be without the basic resources needed to keep warm and healthy. Compton YAL students wanted to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate by giving the gift of warmth to someone in need this holiday season. We designed a chart to show how many blankets we wanted to get and worked towards our goal and deadline. The students told family and friends to help them in collecting new & gently-used blankets.

The drive was simple, easy and fun! And we collected 10 blankets our goal was 24 but this is consider a successful blanket drive since this is our first drive. This blanket drive will help make a difference in the lives of the homeless and less fortunate. We hope that our efforts will give someone in need hope, comfort and warmth this winter.

This month’s community service program was a

volunteer project for the City of Industry Pro Rodeo.

This event is a fundraising event for the Gabriel

Foundation that assists the local schools. The Law

Enforcement Academy from La Puente High School

were in charge of parking direction and security of

the event. They took the skills they learned at school

and applied them first hand at this once a year

experience.

The following weekend the kids that attended this

community service project were rewarded with a

nature hike to a remote waterfall. They got to swim

in the ice cold water as the enjoyed a break from the

walk and ate their lunch.

On Sunday, October 2, the Lakewood YAL running team meet at 5:30 am and traveled to La Mirada, Ca to support Lupus International at their annual Lupus Race for Life event.

All team members successfully completed the 1 mile or 5K race. Deputy Harcrow and Ms. Sandra supported the team by activity participating in the races too. After a great race,

the team enjoyed a delicious breakfast and entertainment.

Teens from the Lakewood YAL engaged in their monthly philanthropic event during the City Council meeting on September 27th. The YAL members took an

active role in leading the pledge of allegiance at the beginning of the meeting. In addition, the teens gave an oral presentation to the Mayor, council members and community residents in attendance. They prepared a PowerPoint presentation to use as visual support while they verbally explained the many activities that

For the month of October, the students continued a

two month long Teddy Bear and Friends drive. These stuffed animals are to be

donated to a local homeless shelter. With the colder

weather approaching, the students also started a blanket drive. These

blankets will be donated to those in need.

At our YAL we encourage and teach leadership skills. During one of our lessons, we emphasized that being able to write and recite a

speech is very important when it comes to being a leader.

Our community service project was making get well cards for a very important older person of the community who took a turn for the worse. And he never received them because he passed away the next day. He was also a mentor to the children in our program, he will be missed. Our condolences goes out to his widow and family.

On a happier note the kids made door hangers for Halloween and enjoyed getting paint everywhere.

Due to bad weather conditions we couldn’t make our planned NHL game so to get them out we went to the pumpkin patch and just let them enjoy the rides and a pumpkin was donated for us to carve and roast seeds

PICO RIVERA

Y.A.L October 2011

This month the Pico Rivera YAL teens were in for a treat. They were introducing to making right choices in life and one of them was fitness. “Fitness rocks” is 30 minutes workout with the staff member Mercedes Quintanilla. The boys and girls are separated during the exercise. Many of our kids enjoy this activity that the center provides.

The second right choice in life is being healthy. This month the kids were taught to make tuna salads, cranberry smoothies with granola and many healthy choices in foods, rather than eating or munching on hot Cheetos, cheeseburgers or fries.

The final right choice in life we discussed is to continue your education. A former gang member in Pico Rivera came to the YAL center to talk to the teens. The speaker named Manuel talked about his bad childhood in life and he encouraged the teens to continue their education and become someone in life.
