    The Halloween Fashion ShowBy

    Claire Edwards

The Halloween fashion show was a huge hit atHuakailani. We had many great costumes. Lower Schoolseemed to like the Storybook Character Theme, while UpperSchool enjoyed the Animal Theme.

Upper, Upperschooler Kaylee Bartram said, The Halloweenfashion show was weird. Kaylee dressed up as Big Bird fromSesame Street. Another student Savannah, thought it was fun.

She was a cowgirl, another great costume! Ginger, 6th gradesaid, It was funny because there were a lot of princesses.Ginger was a jack-in-the-box, a very creative costume.

Altogether I think everyone had a great time.

With their unique color and beauty, Monarch butterflies aone pf the most elegant butterflies in the world. Here at

Huakailani School for Girls, we have released many butterflies.

Monarch butterflies start as a tiny egg. Then when theyhatch, they appear as a tiny caterpillar.

Mother Monarch butterflies lay their eggs on crown flowe

leaves. The reason why is because when they hatch they eat thleaf. Not many crown flowers remain on Hawaii.

People see the caterpillars eating the leaves and use

peticides. They don't know that it kills caterpillars.

Sometimes when a bird sees a butterfly or caterpillar it

will eat it. When it eats a Monarch, it tastes horrible. Once a birdeats one, it knows not to eat an orange and black butterfly again

The birds in Hawaii eat them even though they taste bad becuathere is a lack of insects to eat due to over use of pesticides.

When a monarch caterpillar is grown up and ready to tuinto a butterfly it forms "J" shape. Before a caterpillar makes a

"J", it attaches itself to something with a silk thread. Then itmakes a chrysalis.

After that process, it takes about one week to turn into abutterfly. Here is an example of the lifecycle of the butterfly.

Now you know all about Monarch Butterflies. Remember if you

have a Crown Flower in your yard:

DO NOT SPRAY IT WITH PESTICIDES!

Plant Your Butts HereBy Savannah Morrow

Plant Your Butts Here is a campaign that helpsdecrease the amount of cigarette butts in our environment.

Students at Huakailani paint pots and put them in front of

businesses that want them. Recently, students have added

scoopers so the business employees or owners can cleanthem out. Last year a 4th grader in the upper school

published a letter to Kaneohe Ranch asking if they would

help us with the project. The director of the school met a

lady who is going to make this project to become national.
