Forward Jackson campaign leaders announced that the initial goal of $38 million had been reached A celebration party was held by the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce at Miss Olliersquos on Tuesday September 20 Kyle Spurgeon PresidentCEO of The Chamber said the money raised was from 82 Chamber members and other businesses within Madison County through committed pledges over a five-year period Ryan Porter The Chamberrsquos Vice President of Strategic Initiatives and General Counsel stated that the Forward Jackson campaign has three partsThe first part consists of rebranding the

communityrsquos image through websites and various other forms of media Spurgeon said that Jackson does not have a consistent brand The Chamber will work with local and regional business leaders to develop a way to show the benefits of living and

doing business within the area The second focus is on economic development and the creation of new jobs This is done thought the recruitment of new industries and assisting existing industries with expansionsThe last part of the campaign is community development which includes diversity health and wellness public safety and education

Upon reaching the initial campaign goal the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce has set an additional ldquostretch goalrdquo of $500000

Tennessee Govenor Bill Haslam and Economic and Community Development Commissioner Bill Hagerty announced in September that Mallory Alexander International Logistics LLC in Memphis Copperweld Bimetallics LLC in Fayetteville and Paradoxe Corporation in Jackson are the recipients of the Governorrsquos Awards for Trade Excellence (GATE) The GATE recognition honors large medium and small-size companies who have achieved excellence in engaging in global trade The winners were presented their award at the 58th Annual Governorrsquos Conference on Economic and Community Development on Friday September 23 during the Governorrsquos Luncheon

ldquoThese existing Tennessee businesses are showing Tennessee products and services can be successful in a global economyrdquo Haslam said ldquoThe GATE Award winners are to be congratulated for exploring new markets and seeing the opportunities available in a global marketplacerdquo The companies represent winners in three categories Mallory Alexander International Logistics LLC for the large company category Copperweld Bimetallics LLC for the medium company category and Paradoxe Corporation for the small company category Paradoxe Corporation specializes in electrical power transmission and distribution of energy and address three distinct segments electrical utilities industrial and construction and original equipment manufacturers The companyrsquos core geographical market is North America Central America and South America In 2010 95 percent of Paradoxe Corporationrsquos annual sales were attributed to exports ldquoI congratulate the GATE Award winners for successfully navigating the challenges and opportunities that the global marketplace can bringrdquo Hagerty said ldquoHaving spent much of my private sector career working with overseas markets I have a unique admiration for and understanding of the benefits of global trading and how it can help existing Tennessee companies expand and remain competitiverdquo

Gerdau Mill Celebrates 30th Anniversary in Jackson The Gerdau mill in Jackson Tennessee originated as Florida Steelrsquos fifth steel mill in operation when it began melting and rolling steel in September 1981 Employees and their families were invited to the mill to celebrate the 30th anniversary ldquoThirty years in operation is a great achievement which I attribute largely to our dedicated work force and the long-standing support of the Jackson communityrdquo said Chris Ervin vice president and general manager of Gerdaursquos Jackson mill ldquoWe are grateful for our success and the opportunity to celebrate this important anniver-saryrdquo The Gerdau mill is one of the cityrsquos top 10 manufacturers employing approximately 360 people with an annual payroll of about $3588 million The Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce helped company leadership see the advantages of selecting Jackson for Florida Steelrsquos first location in Tennessee citing its great location for industry and superior transportation system ldquoWe were told the people in the area seemed to have an exceptionally strong work ethic and that turned out to be truerdquo said Bill Kipp human resources manager at the Gerdau mill ldquoWe have a significant number of em-ployees who have been with the company more that 20-plus years and close to 20 employees who have worked at the mill since the very first day in operationrdquo In addition to the companyrsquos involvement with the American Heart Association the Jackson mill has been a partner in education with North Side High School for 20 years Other social responsibility partners in the area include Jackson Symphony the STAR Centerrsquos Kidfest the Exchange Club and United Way

Tourism continues to be a leading industry in Tennessee and specifically in Madison County generating $14866 million in direct tourist spending and creating over 1600 jobs Shortly after his inauguration Governor Bill Haslam created a ldquoTourism Task Forcerdquo along with Tennessee Department of Tourist Development Commissioner Susan Whitaker with a goal of putting Tennessee into the top 10 states in terms of out-of-state travel spending Currently Tennessee is ranked 18th in the nation The three chairs of this committee include Jack Soden Elvis Presley Enterprises Ted Miller Dolly Parton Productions and Colin Reed Gaylord Entertainment The Jackson Convention and Visitors Bureaursquos Lori Nunnery will join 12 tourism leaders from across the state to strategize and identify goals to increase Tennessee tourism spending and job creation ldquoFirst of all I would like to thank Governor Haslam for the opportunity to serve on the Task Forcerdquo Nunnery said ldquoAppointment to this committee will give Jackson and West Tennessee a voice in the continued growth and development of Tennesseersquos tourism product Jackson is well positioned between Memphis and Nashville and itrsquos crucial for us to share our distinctive regionrsquos rural attributes to compliment the statersquos larger attractions and destinationsrdquo Nunnery will be meeting with West Tennessee various tourism partners to continue the conversation on a local level and will join the Task Force as it begins meeting in the upcoming weeks

bull BEINGFRIENDLYThe first voice a person hears when calling your business will generally set the tone for a good business conversation SMILE when answering By being friendly and professional a lsquoPositiversquo impression is achievedbull SPEAKCLEARLYANDDISTINCTLYWhen answering the phone say your businessrsquos name followed by your name Donrsquot hurry the telephonemdashtake the time to clearly pronounce your name Also donrsquot speak while chewing gum eating or drinkingmdashit will slur your words and make the caller feel heshe is interrupting Above all DONrsquoT SHOUT into the phone but make sure your voice is loud enough to be heard by the callerbull LISTENINGDonrsquot use the phrase lsquoHOLD pleasersquo and then do so without waiting to hear the response from the caller It is always important to repeat pertinent information back to the caller to avoid confusion bull REMAINFOCUSEDWhile you are speaking to the customer donrsquot answer e-mail talk to someone nearby open mail or do other work If you are taking notes of the conversation on your computer advise the caller of this Nothing is more irritating to a caller than to hear the click of computer keys or whispered side conversationsbull KEEPTHECALLERINFORMEDShould you have to check on something for the caller inform that person of how long it should take and that you will place himher on hold The use of lsquoIt will take just a secondrsquo is not accurate Tell the caller it will take several minutes and offer to call back if they cannot hold bull PUTYOURENERGYINTOTHECALLIf you sound bored or tired on the phone the caller will consider you unprofessional and uninterested in assisting their request It sometimes is good to stand up when speaking as it may help you to breathe better and gain some energy and focusbull KEEPYOURVOICEMAILCURRENT If you cannot personally answer all calls make sure that your voice mail is just as professional and friendly as if you are there in person Always offer to have the caller leave a message asking for their name and number with a promise to return the call as soon as possible

West Tennessee Healthcare has been presented with the Positive Images of Aging Award by the Southeastern Aging Network The Network consists of eight southeastern states and the award was presented at their 38th annual SE4A Awards Luncheon in September in Memphis The Positive Images of Aging Award has been presented
