TRIP TO THE FOREST OF BOWLAND21st ndash 23rd July 2017

Friday 21st July

This weekend was the brain child of Jerry Bird who had chosen a fabulous location in the heart of the Lancashire countrysideIt was a lush green quiet almost an idylliclocation Unfortunately when we arrived at thefoot of Pendle Hill for our first dayrsquos walk it wasraining and overcast and the skies were very darkpossibly influenced by the memory of the Pendlewitches tried here in 1612 Indeed there weremany reminders of Englandrsquos Salem everywhereone looked A flying broomstick could havecome in handy as what began as a genteel strollsoon became an upward trajectory of somesteepness The plucky few who had elected towalk also faced a horizontal wind which did itsbest to push us back off the summit Yet onecould not help but appreciate the surroundingbeauty We were glad to return to the mostconvivial settings of the Shireburn Arms asuperbly equipped hotel with fabulous bar andrestaurant and an atmospheric smokey fireMike had kindly organised a quiz covering 25questions which followed a delicious eveningmeal of 3 courses Some of the group feeling abit disorientated through being in Lancashirechose the Barnsley chop for their main - to get ataste of Yorkshire

SaturdayThe longer walk on the Saturday also started inDunsop Bridge ndash famous for being thegeographical centre of Britain and havingchurch which was built by a race horse ownerwith the proceeds from his horse winning theDerby in 1861 It also has a bridge which crossesthe river Dunsop ndash hence the name The walkstarted and ended following the aforementioned

river In the middle was rolling pastoral land and atrek up Dunsop Fell The good thing about beingon top of the fell was the views over to Pendle Hillin Lancashire and Pen-Y-Ghent and FountainsFeel in Yorkshire The weather wasnrsquot bad upthere either and the heavy rain and thunderstorms forecast earlier in the week decided tostay away The bad thing about the fell top wasthe risk of being swallowed up in the boggyterrain Thankfully everyone made it across in onepiece and no footwear was lost to the bogalthough a number feet did get very wet In spiteof this and the sometimes strenuous nature of thewalk all remained in good spirits and enjoyedtheir day Also after 105 miles they could to tuckinto their evening meal knowing they had at leastwalked off some of the calories in advance

The meal was once again par excellence Somepeople opted for steak pie chips and mushypeas ndash proper hearty stuff There was a wondrousquiz in the evening devised by Vince Mihill whichall enjoyed immensely Later on drinks were takenby the fireside after a long satisfying daySundayI went for the eggs Benedict in the morning ascouldnrsquot justify the full English as wasnrsquot doing thefinal day walk because I had to get back toLeedsThanks to Jerry for organising a splendid weekendand for all the walk leaders and quiz masters ndashcanrsquot wait for the next HASSRA walking groupweekend away

TRIP TO THE FOREST OF BOWLAND21st ndash 23rd July 2017

Friday 21st July

This weekend was the brain child of Jerry Bird who had chosen a fabulous location in the heart of the Lancashire countrysideIt was a lush green quiet almost an idylliclocation Unfortunately when we arrived at thefoot of Pendle Hill for our first dayrsquos walk it wasraining and overcast and the skies were very darkpossibly influenced by the memory of the Pendlewitches tried here in 1612 Indeed there weremany reminders of Englandrsquos Salem everywhereone looked A flying broomstick could havecome in handy as what began as a genteel strollsoon became an upward trajectory of somesteepness The plucky few who had elected towalk also faced a horizontal wind which did itsbest to push us back off the summit Yet onecould not help but appreciate the surroundingbeauty We were glad to return to the mostconvivial settings of the Shireburn Arms asuperbly equipped hotel with fabulous bar andrestaurant and an atmospheric smokey fireMike had kindly organised a quiz covering 25questions which followed a delicious eveningmeal of 3 courses Some of the group feeling abit disorientated through being in Lancashirechose the Barnsley chop for their main - to get ataste of Yorkshire

SaturdayThe longer walk on the Saturday also started inDunsop Bridge ndash famous for being thegeographical centre of Britain and havingchurch which was built by a race horse ownerwith the proceeds from his horse winning theDerby in 1861 It also has a bridge which crossesthe river Dunsop ndash hence the name The walkstarted and ended following the aforementioned

river In the middle was rolling pastoral land and atrek up Dunsop Fell The good thing about beingon top of the fell was the views over to Pendle Hillin Lancashire and Pen-Y-Ghent and FountainsFeel in Yorkshire The weather wasnrsquot bad upthere either and the heavy rain and thunderstorms forecast earlier in the week decided tostay away The bad thing about the fell top wasthe risk of being swallowed up in the boggyterrain Thankfully everyone made it across in onepiece and no footwear was lost to the bogalthough a number feet did get very wet In spiteof this and the sometimes strenuous nature of thewalk all remained in good spirits and enjoyedtheir day Also after 105 miles they could to tuckinto their evening meal knowing they had at leastwalked off some of the calories in advance

The meal was once again par excellence Somepeople opted for steak pie chips and mushypeas ndash proper hearty stuff There was a wondrousquiz in the evening devised by Vince Mihill whichall enjoyed immensely Later on drinks were takenby the fireside after a long satisfying daySundayI went for the eggs Benedict in the morning ascouldnrsquot justify the full English as wasnrsquot doing thefinal day walk because I had to get back toLeedsThanks to Jerry for organising a splendid weekendand for all the walk leaders and quiz masters ndashcanrsquot wait for the next HASSRA walking groupweekend away

Next yearrsquos overseas trip organised by the Walking Club is to the village if Igls which lies on aplateau above historic Innsbruck and is only a short bus ride away

TRIP TO THE FOREST OF BOWLAND21st ndash 23rd July 2017

Friday 21st July

This weekend was the brain child of Jerry Bird who had chosen a fabulous location in the heart of the Lancashire countrysideIt was a lush green quiet almost an idylliclocation Unfortunately when we arrived at thefoot of Pendle Hill for our first dayrsquos walk it wasraining and overcast and the skies were very darkpossibly influenced by the memory of the Pendlewitches tried here in 1612 Indeed there weremany reminders of Englandrsquos Salem everywhereone looked A flying broomstick could havecome in handy as what began as a genteel strollsoon became an upward trajectory of somesteepness The plucky few who had elected towalk also faced a horizontal wind which did itsbest to push us back off the summit Yet onecould not help but appreciate the surroundingbeauty We were glad to return to the mostconvivial settings of the Shireburn Arms asuperbly equipped hotel with fabulous bar andrestaurant and an atmospheric smokey fireMike had kindly organised a quiz covering 25questions which followed a delicious eveningmeal of 3 courses Some of the group feeling abit disorientated through being in Lancashirechose the Barnsley chop for their main - to get ataste of Yorkshire

SaturdayThe longer walk on the Saturday also started inDunsop Bridge ndash famous for being thegeographical centre of Britain and havingchurch which was built by a race horse ownerwith the proceeds from his horse winning theDerby in 1861 It also has a bridge which crossesthe river Dunsop ndash hence the name The walkstarted and ended following the aforementioned

river In the middle was rolling pastoral land and atrek up Dunsop Fell The good thing about beingon top of the fell was the views over to Pendle Hillin Lancashire and Pen-Y-Ghent and FountainsFeel in Yorkshire The weather wasnrsquot bad upthere either and the heavy rain and thunderstorms forecast earlier in the week decided tostay away The bad thing about the fell top wasthe risk of being swallowed up in the boggyterrain Thankfully everyone made it across in onepiece and no footwear was lost to the bogalthough a number feet did get very wet In spiteof this and the sometimes strenuous nature of thewalk all remained in good spirits and enjoyedtheir day Also after 105 miles they could to tuckinto their evening meal knowing they had at leastwalked off some of the calories in advance

The meal was once again par excellence Somepeople opted for steak pie chips and mushypeas ndash proper hearty stuff There was a wondrousquiz in the evening devised by Vince Mihill whichall enjoyed immensely Later on drinks were takenby the fireside after a long satisfying daySundayI went for the eggs Benedict in the morning ascouldnrsquot justify the full English as wasnrsquot doing thefinal day walk because I had to get back toLeedsThanks to Jerry for organising a splendid weekendand for all the walk leaders and quiz masters ndashcanrsquot wait for the next HASSRA walking groupweekend away

TRIP TO THE FOREST OF BOWLAND21st ndash 23rd July 2017

Friday 21st July

This weekend was the brain child of Jerry Bird who had chosen a fabulous location in the heart of the Lancashire countrysideIt was a lush green quiet almost an idylliclocation Unfortunately when we arrived at thefoot of Pendle Hill for our first dayrsquos walk it wasraining and overcast and the skies were very darkpossibly influenced by the memory of the Pendlewitches tried here in 1612 Indeed there weremany reminders of Englandrsquos Salem everywhereone looked A flying broomstick could havecome in handy as what began as a genteel strollsoon became an upward trajectory of somesteepness The plucky few who had elected towalk also faced a horizontal wind which did itsbest to push us back off the summit Yet onecould not help but appreciate the surroundingbeauty We were glad to return to the mostconvivial settings of the Shireburn Arms asuperbly equipped hotel with fabulous bar andrestaurant and an atmospheric smokey fireMike had kindly organised a quiz covering 25questions which followed a delicious eveningmeal of 3 courses Some of the group feeling abit disorientated through being in Lancashirechose the Barnsley chop for their main - to get ataste of Yorkshire

SaturdayThe longer walk on the Saturday also started inDunsop Bridge ndash famous for being thegeographical centre of Britain and havingchurch which was built by a race horse ownerwith the proceeds from his horse winning theDerby in 1861 It also has a bridge which crossesthe river Dunsop ndash hence the name The walkstarted and ended following the aforementioned

We have Suzanne Gee to thank for teaching some members thevintage art of ldquotatting (lace making)rdquoSuzanne showed an enormous amount ofpatience with the less dexterousattendees but we got there in the end

BOOKING TERMS AND CONDITIONSHASSRA TRIPS AND EVENTS

The following terms and conditions will apply to all events to ensure that every member has a fair opportunity toparticipate in events The terms and conditions should be read in conjunction with the relevant booking form

1 Wherever possible events will be advertised with a closing date for applications that is at least 4 weeks from the datefirst advertised including proposed events where expressions of interest are being requested

2 Persons wishing to travel together should complete one application form per room submit their applications togetherand determine a lead person who will be responsible for forwarding payments due and act as the contact on behalf of thegroup via a signed disclaimer agreeing to these terms and conditions

3 A booking will not be accepted or entered in a draw without the correct deposit and signed disclaimer

4 Once the closing date is reached the number of applicants wishing to travel will be determined Where there aresufficient places for all applicants then deposit cheques will be banked and places confirmed

5 Members should be aware that once deposit cheques have been banked they are not returnable and travellers will beliable to pay full price of the trip (unless the place is subsequently filled) Full price means the un discounted nonshymember price Where necessary HASSRA (Leeds) will provide an invoice for the full price for insurance purposes buttravellers need to be aware that the cost of insurance (if purchased) is non-refundable

6 Travel operators will be asked to date insurance cover from the date on which they receive notification of the personstravelling It is therefore essential to obtain adequate travel insurance before booking if you do not purchase theinsurance offered

7 Single supplements There will be no member discount on supplements for travellers wishing to secure a singleroom Where members indicate on the application form that they are willing to share a room with someone of the samesex the organiser will arrange for pairing If an individual has indicated that they are willing to share they will not have topay a single supplement even if no pair is available

8 Where the number of applicants exceeds the places available a random draw of application forms will determinethose successful in receiving a place subject to Clause 8 Cheques accompanying these applications will then beprocessed Remaining applications will continue to be drawn at random to determine the order of the reserve list

9 The trip organiser will be granted up to two places on that trip without entry into the ballot An organiser is the personwho arranges the trip on behalf of the HASSRA Events Committee whether or not she is a member of the Committee

10 Where expressions of interest have been sought for a proposed trip if that trip is subsequently confirmedapplications received from those expressing interest prior to the closing date will be given priority to book before anyunfilled places on the trip are advertised On these occasions once the closing date is reached remaining places will befilled on a first come first served basis

11 Members who have been unsuccessful in a ballot for a trip may record this on their application for the next trip to thesame destination and will be given priority for available spaces

12 Applications from solely non-member groups ie not accompanying a full HASSRA member wishing to participate inan event will be considered only in the event of places remaining after the closing date has passed

13 The priority order will be a) Organiser +1 b) Previously unsuccessful on similar trip (ballot if necessary) c) Priorregistered interest (ballot if necessary) d) Other Members e) Non Member groups

14 Non-members may apply to travel at the discounted rate on an event provided that they satisfy the criterion forassociate membership and send a completed application for membership together with the appropriate payment on orbefore the closing date for the trip Associate Membership will last for 12 months from the date of processing theapplication The Committee reserves the right to determine specific criteria for prior membership on certain trips Anysuch requirements will be notified in the advertisement Participants are reminded to conduct themselves in anappropriate manner while attending HASSRA sponsored trips and events Formal complaints may prejudice anindividuals eligibility for future trips
