Is social media the new form of communication for the sciences industry? Many fi rms are taking a new look at their marketing strategies and are inspiring new social media forums that summarize trends and highlights within the industry. Some sites bookmark and catalog articles of importance or facts regarding scientifi c discoveries while others are creating podcasts in the fi eld or are generating content aggregators and newsfeeds. Even NASA is connecting through social media and is using links to Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Ustream, and Flickr.

Many scientists have adopted the use of open sourcing such as Linux software and are creating sites that utilize blogs and wikis (a website that allows the easy creation and editing of any number of interlinked web pages via a web browser using a simplifi ed markup language) to solve complex problems in a group collaborative such as Bizarro and ResearchGate. One new tool scientists are working to take advantage of is Google Wave. Google Wave serves as a combination of e-mail, instant messaging, wiki, and social networking for real-time collaborative editing.

Whatever the form of media output, these new corporate models serve as an inherent reminder that technology and socialization is evolving and adapting. One can suspect that more, larger companies will follow suit.
