    Lie as a Cross-Town Student

    By MIDN 4/c Okon

    Georgia Techs

    NROTC program allows

    students from three dier-

ent colleges to be a part ofthe battalion: Georgia Tech,Georgia State, and South-

    ern Polytechnic. Being a

    cross-town student myself,

    I know that Georgia State

and Southern Poly stu-dents have many benets

    and drawbacks for attend-

ing a dierent school thanthe rest of the battalion.

    One of the major benets

    is attending the school of

the students choice, whileparticipating in and reaping

    all of the NROTC programs

    benets. Those students

    still have access to the

CRC, GT student tickets, homecoming events, etc.

    They have the benet of

    meeting dierent people

from Georgia Tech whilestill attending their choicecollege.

    On the other hand,

    those students have to

calculate travel costs andtime into his/her schedule

    when coming into the bat-

    talion, although car pool-

ing tends to help with the

costs. Most cross- townstudents nd it dicult to

    attend homecoming and

    extra events the battalion

    participates in because of

    this traveling that is re-quired.

    If a cross-town is

    a 4/c midshipmen and

he/she has to do studyhours, the sta is more

    lenient on cross-town

    students and how

    those hours get done.

Instead of traveling 30-40 minutes (if attending

    SPSU) and 15 minutes (if

    attending Georgia State),

    cross-town students are

    allowed to complete them

at their own college, butlike Georgia Tech students,

    they must be supervised.

    Along with study hours,

    students can complete their

required community servicehours at their respective

    colleges.

    All in all, cross-town

students tend to lead a littlebit more of a hectic life than

    that of a regular college

    student.

    Football

With a team goal o nish-

    ing with a winning record

    in the graduate league,

    the Navy ootball team

    placed a huge importance

    on jump-starting the sea-

    son with early

    victories and rid-

    ing that success

    into the playos.

    Ater winning the

    rst our games

    o the season

    the Navy had the

    number one de-

    ense with only

    6 allowed points. With

    our straight wins the

    team clenched a playo

    spot, guaranteed a win-

    ning record, and ranked

at the top o the division. The th week the team

    suered several setbacks;

    our o starting players

    were injured, Tim Preston

    (Linebacker) and Robert

    Whelens (Quarterback) in-

    juries were season ending.

    The team was unable to

overcome these setbacks, losing their last regular sea-

    son game. Ater the loss,

    team captain Hans Toohey

said, This is the best sea-

    son that the Navy has

    had since I have played

    [our years].

For the playos, the team was ineli-

    gible or the grad-

    uate league brack-

    et, so they were

    placed in the inde-

    pendent bracket.

    The rst playo

    game was against

Rolo Brown. Due toinjuries and time

    conficts the Navy

team was short a man or

    the rst quarter. The Navy

    team lost 28-6 ending the

    season.

    3 TIPS

    1. When scheduling classes, usethe on-line course critique (http://

    sga.gatech.edu/critique/). The cri-tique provides a wealth o inorma-

tion to make your lie easier; how-

ever, there are some actors that are

more important than others. You are

able to view ALL o the proessors

who have taught a course, their

    average GPA and grade dis-

    tribution, when they

    taught the

    course, and you

can also read stu-dent reviews about

    them. Dont blindly

    ollow their average

    GPAmake sure you

    check actors like the drop

    percentage (W%) and the diculty

o the tests (in the survey data).

2.Evenly schedule your classes. This goes or both course diculty

and class distribution. I you knowyou have to take 2 lab sciences or

    your major dont schedule them

both in one semester! Classes with

labs and other 4-hour classes are big

time-eaters, so you want to make

sure you spread them out as much

as you can. The same goes or what

    time you take your classessure

    that class-ree Thursday looks ap-

pealing, but do you want 6 straight

hours o classes on Monday, Wednes-

day, and Friday? Try to leave some

time between classes so you have a

    chance to rest/eat/study and head

to class eeling resh! Take the extra

hal-hour to plan out which classes

you want to register or beore your

    time ticket rolls around.

    3. Dont be so hasty to drop classesduring the rst week o the semes-

ter. Unless you absolutely know youare going to struggle in a class (have

one o the Four Horsemen, acciden-

tally got in an Honors class, etc) you

should give it a shot. Use

    resources like the course

    critique and

    RateMyPro-

    essors.

    com to

    research

    your

    proessor

    thorough-

    ly beore

    deciding

    to throw

yoursel back to the mercy o the

    registration system. Remember, just

    because your teacher hardly speaks

English doesnt mean his tests are

dicult or you have a bad TA. It is

better to end up in a planned class

you are unsure o than a completelyrandom one you were orced into by

    registration conficts.

    Upcoming

EventsAs many o you may already

    know, this weekend is Homecom

ing here at Georgia Tech! What

does this mean you ask? Wel

    Homecoming has been a huge

tradition at Tech since 1920 and

    includes such activities as the

Freshman Cake race, the Mini 500

Mr. and Ms. GT, and the Ramblin

Reck parade. To see how each ac-

tivity plays its role in Homecom-

ing you are just going to have toget out there and experience it

    or yoursel

You cant orget ootball when it

    comes to homecoming. This yea

    your number 19th ranked Jackets

ace o against the ranked 4th

Virginia Tech Hokies in a battle

that is sure to be intense and

exciting. So make sure you get

your tickets or tune in to ESPN2 at1800 to watch the Yellow Jackets

move on to certain victory over

    the Hokies

    The annual Navy League

Mixer was held last month on

    Morehouse campus. This is a

    right o passage or midship-

    men, giving us an opportuni-

ty to interact with each other

in a relaxed setting while in

    the presence o seniors(in

    rank and tenure both) more

    knowledgeable than our-

    selves. We entertained sev-

    eral guest speakers, both

    reserve and active duty, all

    o whom brought a plethora

    o knowledge rom various

    service selections. The mixer

    gave each midshipman a

    chance to speak with some-

    one rom their community

    o interest. Having a chance

    to converse with someone

who knows the ins and outs

o the service will gain value

    and importance as we move

    closer to commissioning.

From the 1/c to the 4/c, mid-

    shipmen seemed to have

    been appreciative o the

    opportunity aorded to gain

    awareness and comprehen-

    sion o the potential roles

    we could play in the

greater scheme o theUnited States Navy.
