There were 8 entries, of which 5 teams were all male, 2 were all female, and 1 was mixed.
In the first round, the eight teams were split into two pools, giving a total of 6 matches per pool. The placings at the end of the round closely matched the initial seedings. The two women’s teams were in positions 4 and 5, and they elected to fence in the second-round pools, followed by a women-only final match.
The second round was basically a re-run of the first-round format, with the top two teams from each of the first-round pools competing for positions 1-4.
The competition gave all teams a full day’s fencing, which most competitors seemed to enjoy, although some of the less experienced fencers were unprepared for such a long day. We just managed to clear the hall by the deadline of 6 pm.

The South East championships were held on Sunday 19th January at the University of Kent in Canterbury.
A good entry of 28 men were divided into 4 pools of 7 for the first round with Joe Joyner (Gravesham) and Ralph Johnson (Tenterden) coming through as number 1 and 2 seeds respectively. The first round of DE saw all of the top 8 seeds progressing with the exception of Alex Edwards (R&R 6th seed) who lost to Adam Whitelaw (Eltham College 11th seed). In the final 4, Joe Joyner defeated Stephan Munn (Blackheath) and David Carr (Meopham) defeated Adam Whitelaw (Eltham College) to set up the final between 2 under 20 fencers. An exciting final saw Joe Joyner defeat David Carr. Joe was also presented with the John Fairhall trophy for the top under 20 male fencer.
For the first time medals were also presented to the top intermediate fencers in the overall placings, with gold presented to David Carr, silver to Adam Whitelaw and bronzes to Tom Ingliss (UKC)and Alex Edwards.
In the Womens event 15 fencers competed in 3 pools of 5 with Patricia Kiy (Dream) and Nicola Hull (Dream) coming through as the top 2 seeds. However the DE saw several of the top seeds defeated leaving the final 4 of Jane Clayton (Mallard 8th seed) against Sarah Steacy (Crawley, 13th seed) and Aiden Sharp ( Dream 6th seed) against Nicola Hull ( 2nd seed ) The 2 veteran fencers reached the final where Nicola Hull defeated Jane Clayton 15 – 11.
The intermediate medals for the Women’s event were presented to: Aiden Sharp
(Dream) - gold, Sarah Steacy ( Crawley) - silver, Patricia Kiy (Dream) and Samantha Seager (Mallard) - bronze.
Grateful thanks to Peter Huggins and Dominique Kennett for the professional running of the event and to Janet Huggins for working hard on the armoury all day.
Thanks also to Peter Huggins for his final comment when presenting the medals, that the mens event was won by the “Boys” (referring to the 2 Under 20’s) and the womens event was won by the two “Old Dears”!!! (referring to the 2 vets). There is life left in the “Old Dears” yet!!
