8th Grandparents

Day Event

A wonderful intergenerational event with over 25 grandparents (whose total ages came to over 1,600 years!) and 61 children taking part in traditional games and a 1940s singalong with the Wraggle Taggle Band. The final half of the afternoon including 1940s dances and party pieces including doing the Hokey Cokey. This was our 8th year in organising such an event.

Grandad Robin sang Over the Sea to Sky and Emily (13 years) sang some beautiful Spanish songs. Several younger children performed “Heads, Shoulders, Knees & Toes” accompanied by Mick & Mick on the banjo and guitar as the Wraggle Taggle Band.

“The children were really interested in my time as a evacuee”. Yolanda (85 years).

“The hokey cokey was best as we all got up and danced together“ Anna & Hope

“I was proud of my granddaughter who got up and sang a Spanish song” (Maria 81 years).

Some watched some WW2 propaganda films (dig for victory, doctor carrot) and older people then told stories about living through the 1940s. Several had been evacuees as children who were moved out of London due to the bombings. Children were enthralled with their stories. There was a quiz in which you had to put 1940s prices to a range of items (eg. a small bungalow cost £250 whilst a car cost £169!)

In the front room Uni ran a Make Do and Mend workshop recycled materials to make paper ros-es and brooches. Dedicated under 5s table areas enabled young children to take part using col-ouring books and pens. Two students from the City University filmed sessions to put on a short documentary on the education channel. Family bingo (at 12 noon) proved highly popular and over subscribed. A wonderful intergenerational activity.

At 1 pm was a communal lunch of bangers (Halal) and mash with several sittings to ensure eve-rybody had a nourishing hot (free) lunch together. Over 100 people from several generations sat down together to have a meal.

Afternoon A range of traditional games were organised with older people explaining the rules to the children present. Games included; snap, tiddly winks and doodlebug

The Wraggle Taggle Band came along to sing and play sings from a specially designed souvenir Song Book including the Lambeth Walk, Don’t Dilly Dally, Run Rabbit Run! And more Mid afternoon there was a traditional English afternoon tea followed by a 1940s Fashion Show

put on by children who had made a range of recycled items including handbags.

50 adults and 61 children took part in our Grandparents Day event
