Symposium on Rules and Regulations of Defensive Driving

In conformity with customer top management and HSE Division com-mitment to support HSE policies and to demonstrate the importance of HSE role during all project,s phases; Amerya Petroleum Refining Co. (APRC) awarded Enppi a certificate of recognition for its outstanding and excep-tional performance in achieving the standards of HSE supervision, during the execution of construction works of Upgrading Phenol Extraction Unit Project at Amerya in Alexandria and for achieving one million safe working manhours without Lost Time Injuries (LTIs.).

Defensive Driving is a new meth-od for vehicles driving, such a method encourages abiding by traffic rules and regulations to avoid accidents, due to the driver’s or others’ mistakes. In light of Enppi social responsibil-ity towards its personnel’s safety, the HSE Division, in coordination with the HR Division, held a symposium titled “Rules and Regulations of Defensive Driving” on August 8th, 2016. Enppi employees from various divisions at-tended the symposium, Chemist /Mohamed El-Naier; the former Chair-

man Assistant of the Egyptian Holding Co. for Natural Gas (EGAS) for HSE, gave a speech on safety and risks sur-rounding vehicle drivers. Awareness and scientific films depicting all kinds of road accidents were played with explanation of reasons and measures to avoid them. The attendees inter-acted with their valuable remarks and comments. The symposium highlight-ed the following topics:• The main reasons for road ac-

cidents are driver, behavior, weather and road conditions.

• Drivers’ safety rules and attrib-utes i.e. concentration and smart reflex reactions to evade others’ mistakes.

• The healthiest seating position behind the driving wheel to avoid backaches due to long-distance drives.

• The importance of abiding by speed limits and limiting speed due to roads and weather condi-tions.

• Devices which can safely be used instead of mobile phones.

• The Seat belt and its importance and proper use.

• The blind spot dangers while driving, and measures to avoid it. The blind spot is the area that cannot be observed in the mirror, whether the interior or the spot one. A very famous blind external spot is that facing the back of the car from the two sides. If a car is in the blind spot of another one, it can never be observed even in the mirrors, then the most reli-able techniques to use to avoid the blind spot are:

1. Adjusting the side mirrors in an almost right angle for wider view.

2. Avoid being in the blind spot of other cars.

Strategic Management…Concept and Application

Dr. Eng. Ashraf Orabi

General ManagerProject Managers/Engineers

[email protected]

Market conditions are not static; dyna-mism is the order of the day, and every business needs to craft its own way of responding to market’s changes to re-main competitive. Stra-tegic management is an essential concept to identify and respond to the numerous sources of change. Scholars and practitioners defined Strategic management as continuous planning, monitoring, analysis and assessment of all that is necessary for an organization to meet its goals and objectives.

Share-holders’ main objective might be concluded in optimizing profits. For this purpose, they hire professional man-aging staff, who could make the most of limited resources and cope with a chang-ing environment. Employees’ satisfaction and motivation, better decision making and cost savings are considered integral parts of effective management objectives.

Strategic Management is the power-ful tool top management and senior man-agers would adopt to anticipate future problems and opportunities. It provides employees with clear objectives and di-rections for the future of the organiza-tion, which would eventually result in more effective contribution and better performance, compared to non-strategic management organizations.

At this point a valid question should be answered; why international organiza-

tions apply strategic management tech-niques?

CEOs’ of major successful multi-na-tional organizations presented long lists of reasons, which might be concluded and summarized in the following points:1. It represents a framework for im-

proved coordination and control of activities. Decisions will better sup-port established objectives.

2. It allows more effective allocation of time and resources to identified op-portunities. It also helps to integrate the behavior of individuals into a to-tal effort.

3. It creates a framework for internal communication among personnel.

4. It provides bases for the clarification of individual responsibilities and en-couragement to forward thinking and a favorable attitude towards change.

Page 27: October - December 2016, No 106 - Enppi. - Dec. 2016... · YASREF conceptual design and reached an innovative design ... FSRU/LNG berth with natural gas import via 170 000 m3 FSRU

The concept is clear and attractive. Managers would find it a magic solution for most problems and difficulties they face. On the other hand, application of the concern is hard and requires belief and understanding by senior and line managers. So, what should senior man-agers do?

Again, we get back to the experienc-es gained while applying the concept in different multi-national organizations. They advise managers to apply a set of activities which make it possible for them to meet targets in the following form:1. Forecast the future and provide a

picture of how the future will look like from the business perspective. Top Management creates a vision and senior managers draw the pic-ture.

2. Plan the future of the organization and think about all future activities that will need to be accomplished

from organizational members.3. Make and take decisions as a logical

and ordered process of ascertain-ing that managers address all pos-sible options and all of the critical elements needed for a successful outcome.

4. Organize activities and make all organizational differentiations to work as one whole, i.e. “The Organ-ization”, and assign the right person into the right position via selecting the right staff for a certain activity, which is the heart of enabling suc-cessful company’s future opera-tions.

5. Managers should coach and lead through illuminate to their subor-dinates or team members the right direction, where the organization will need to go. They are simply in-structors and trainers. The goal is to develop business with potential great business energy in all organi-

zational members.6. Employees must be motivated if

managers want to get the best re-sults from their work. Managers cannot find the person who works for nothing.

7. A controlling process will give man-agers the picture of possible faults, deviations and failures to what have been planned and actual re-sults from the implementation of plans.

8. Managers should consider how they look, talk, walk and think. Pre-sentable managers will build the picture of the company in the out-siders’ eyes.

9. Successful managers know how to delegate the right tasks to the right person. Delegating tasks to team members is something that differentiates successful managers from average and below average managers.

Treated wastewater is considered a water resource in the Middle Eastern countries such as: Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Tunis and Yemen.

Reuse of treated wastewater is applied in agriculture, groundwater recharge, fire protection and greenbelts. This study presents the reuse of treated wastewater in agriculture as it is the most needed application in Egypt.

Wastewater treatment plants are used on a large scale in Egypt. This study covers El-Berka Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), where the treated wastewa-ter from El-Berka WWTP is directly discharged to El-Gabal El-Asfar drain, running into Bilbeis drain, then Bahr El-Baqar drain running into El-Manzala lake on the Mediterranean, at the North shore of Egypt ( fig. 2). The Reuse of treated wastewater in agriculture has several constraints related to health, economic, environmental, social and legal concern.

A detailed feasibility study – environmental, techni-cal and economical was presented to determine the vis-ibility of the reuse of treated wastewater in agriculture.

The study presented the reuse of treated wastewa-

ter from El-Berka WWTP in agriculture, according to three scenarios:Scenario (1) Reuse of primary treated wastewater in ir-rigation of a new wooden trees farm, by using surface irrigation system.Scenario (2) Reuse of secondary treated wastewater in irrigation of a new farm consisting of wooden trees, veg-etables consumed cooked, and industrial crops by using sprinkler irrigation system.Scenario (3) Reuse of tertiary treated wastewater in ir-rigation of a new farm consisting of consumed raw veg-etables by using drip irrigation system.

The determination of alternatives in agriculture de-pending on the degree of treatment, the selection of irrigated crops and the selection of irrigation methods.

The environmental feasibility study presented the environmental impacts and the environmental evalua-tion by using risk assessment techniques. The optimal environmental scenario to reuse treated wastewater in irrigation is the lowest risk values. The technical feasi-bility study presented the environmental issues and

the recommended mitigations to mitigate the technical impacts. The economic feasibility study took into con-sideration the recommended mitigations from the en-vironmental and technical feasibility. The economic fea-sibility used Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) and presented the basic assumptions, cost and benefit stream for each scenario and the economic measures.

The optimal economic scenario to reuse treated wastewater in irrigation was the scenario with the high-est economic measures.

The optimal economic and environmental scenario was determined by using relative weights. The sensitiv-ity analysis has been applied to examine the feasibility of the optimal scenario against the change of the variables and/or technical coefficients, used in the environmental and economic evaluation (Fig. 3).

The theoretical investigation, which was carried out in this study, led to the following conclusions:(1) The existing situation of El-Berka WWTP is wast-ing the treated wastewater by discharging the treated wastewater in El-Gabal El-Asfar drain, which is not rec-ommended.(2) The recommended scenario to reuse the treated wastewater in irrigation is the second scenario (the op-timal environmental and economic scenario), where re-use of secondary treated wastewater in irrigating a new farm consists of wooden trees, potatoes and sugar beet by using sprinkler irrigation system.(3) The highest risk in scenario (2) is the pollution of air by droplets and stink besides the use of agriculture drains in municipal uses and fishing farms. To reduce the environmental risk value of scenario (2), the control of air pollution by droplets and fetidness shall be consid-ered.(4) The most effective variable to increase the Net Pres-ent Value (NPV) is the running costs, where for example a reduction of the running costs by 20% increases the NPV by 23.6%.

To understand the cost efficiency of the minimum facili-ties platforms in developing the marginal fields, we need to have an idea about the cost breakdown of a marginal field over the various activities, it is revealed that the majority of the field development cost is found in the conductor driving and well drilling as well as the platform installation, espe-cially if the installation is taking place using high-cost heavy lift installation vessels, therefore, decreasing platform instal-lation cost provided by these structural systems improves the feasibility of the marginal field development.

Conductor Supported Platform (CSP) concept has been widely adopted as a cost effective solution for marginal

fields, the concept is based on utilizing the conductors as the main supporting element of the topside in lieu of the traditional pile element, the cost efficiency is coming from merging the cost of the foundation piles and conductors in terms of material, fabrication and installation.

The main components of the (CSP) are: • CONDUCTORS: Provide housing for the wells and

structural support for the deck. • DECK: Support for equipment piping and manifolds,

Personnel access to the surface wellheads and trees.• SUBSTRUCTURE: Provides the installation template

The main components of the (CSP) “NAO” PlatformConductor Supported (CSP)

for the conductor, shares in resist-ing environmental load and pro-vides bracing system for the con-ductor group.

• APPURTENANCES: Boat landing, risers, caissons, etc.

The installation procedure of the (CSP) is starting from placing the sub-structure on seabed followed by driv-ing the piles (conductors) through sub-structure legs, installing the required appurtenances (boat landing, risers, caissons, etc.) and ending with install-ing the topside over the driven piles (conductors).

Compared to conventional plat-form system, the (CSP) concept has on one hand, a cost reduction privilege in material and fabrication coming from low substructure weight relative to conventional jackets and utilizing the conductors as the foundation piles, on the other hand, a considerable reduc-tion in installation time and cost com-

ing from eliminating the most installa-tion time consuming component of the platform (pile driving), as it merged in conductor driving, also the light weight of substructure and deck can allow in-stallation of all platform components by smaller Derrick Barges or even by drilling rigs reducing considerably the installation cost.

On the other hand, the CSP system is considered a fit for purpose solu-tion for marginal fields, i.e., the sys-tem doesn’t give operators the oppor-tunity to extend the utilization of the platforms or add another facilities, the limited reserve capacity may not make this system a preferable solution for some operators, especially as strength-ening such system is a complicated process

One of the most critical issues of the (CSP) structural engineering is the Dynamic sensitivity of the system, which should be precisely assessed

and properly accounted for, in evaluat-ing the (CSP) structural performance under loading conditions with dynamic nature, this includes wave response, seismic and wave induced fatigue. Be-sides; large lateral displacement asso-ciated with such type of flexible struc-tures would impose more challenges in the design of risers and piping.

The (CSP) concept is now adopted in the detailed engineering of GPC Platform “NAO”, currently being un-dertaken by Enppi as part of EPC pro-ject” GPC,Two New Platforms at NAO & HH Fields”, the platform is located in the shallow water with a water depth of 22.0 m and has four conductor/pile driven to about 90 m penetra-tion, through a subsea template of 100 tonnes lift weight, the platform topside is consisted of 3 levels and helideck ac-commodating well heads, manifold, 3 generators and E&I module with a total lift weight of 500 tonnes.

Distracted Driving

The human brain and adaptation to tasksIt must be known that the human brain can adapt to

different tasks in a quick way, and it is a serious error to consider accomplishing multiple tasks in the same time. Actually, the human brain lacks such ability. Hence, it can switch from one task to another in a rapid way, but it con-tinues working on one task only per time.

Dangers associated with distracted drivingA driver may be distracted for moments during driv-

ing. This distraction does not always entail problems. Yet, such moments can cause an accident leading to injury or death if others commit a mistake at the same time or if the vehicle deflects in a way that makes it impossible to avoid danger, consequently shortening the “Time of Re-action” which is needed to avoid any mishap.

Distracted driving has four main types:•Optical Distraction; which is focusing on a certain spot along the road, such as; staring at passengers in the back seats or the ads on the road sides…etc.•Auditory Distraction; which is listening to a certain sound such as; listening to a talking person or a weeping child, which may urge the driver to react.•Kinetic/Physical Distraction; which is being preoc-cupied by doing other things during driving, such as eat-ing, drinking, smoking, searching for objects or calling others on the phone.•Perceptive Distraction; which is being preoccupied with things other than driving. All drivers face this kind of distraction, since the human brain is designed in a way that makes it think of a long list of work, family or person-

What is Distracted Driving ? It is driving with a preoccupied mind, due to another activity that may distract the attention of a driver away from the major task, which is driving.

al tasks, this leads the subconscious mind to take charge of driving till the brain is free from thinking and restore concentration. In these minutes, danger is at its highest levels and if the driver faces a situation in which he must interact, his reaction will be distracted and it will not be accurate enough.

Drivers may face one or more of those distractions at the same time. For example, using the phones includes a physical distraction when dialing numbers or searching the phonebook, an auditory and perceptive distraction when conversing regarding work, since it requires think-ing, recalling data and information from messages…etc.

Texting messages exposes drivers to all four distraction types. The required movements to type entail that the driver directs his attention from the road four times more than the normal cases, this signifies a liable accident .

Many people assume that cell phones accessories (hand free sets, Bluetooth and head phones) can be enough to limit the dangers related to the use of cell phones during driving. In fact, all those tools may restrict the degree of some physical distractions but do not help with auditory and perceptive distraction resulting from a conversation and the interaction with the person on the phone line . In such cases, the driver stares at the road continuously, but the actual degree of vision and interac-tion with the surroundings is 50% less. How to reduce the level of distraction during driving ?

The release of more traffic laws is not the right so-

lution. The actual solution is the use of common sense and the awareness of the importance to drive attentively. We all face all types of distractions during driving, but we are responsible for minimizing the level of those distrac-tions and paying attention only to the road . This can be achieved through the following recommendation:• Reduce the causes of distraction via the accomplish-ment of what you need to do such as; making phone calls, eating, smoking…etc., before sitting behind the wheel.• Train yourself to refrain from being preoccupied with matters other than driving and focus on the road.• Also remember to get nap and relax before driving. Ex-haustion has a negative impact on concentration during driving.• Buckle children up and provide them with toys, books…etc. to keep them occupied.• If you need to deal with a sudden matter during driving, pull over in a safe area and deal with it.• Refrain, completely, from using the phone. In emergen-cy cases, answer when you are sure of your safety.• Adjust the internal and external mirrors and the driver’s seat position.• Refrain from placing medals or any accessories on the internal mirrors or on the dash board.• You can assign few of the tasks you need to accomplish to whoever is accompanying you in the vehicle such as; searching places in maps or answering your phone, till you reach your destination.

Our Beautiful Country

El-Gouna.. An Enchanting Paradise on the Red SeaThe famous Egyptian beaches overlooking the Red Sea are known for their charm and beauty , as Sharm El Sheikh,

Hurghada and El-Gouna. El-Gouna beaches with their soft sands, bright sun, fantastic coral reefs encourage diving lovers to enjoy scuba diving. El-Gouna also is known as the Red Sea Venice,

that consists of several islands and lakes and was established in 1990.

El-Gouna, is a 22-km-far city from Hurghada International Airport, overviews the fantastic Red Sea beaches, with their landscapes extending to 10 km. The sunny and moderate climate provides relaxation, privacy and comfort for tranquility seekers.

El-Gouna resorts and hotels have private beaches overlooking the two main beaches; “Zaytouna Beach” and “Mangroovy Beach”. El-Gouna, with a wide range of watersports, such as scuba diving, snorkeling, windsurfing, kitesurfing, waterskiing, and parasailing, encourages tourists to enjoy their time. «El-Gouna» Word Meaning

“El-Gouna” or “Lagoon” means artificial beaches and waterways, being dug to receive sea water. Only in El-Gouna, all beaches’ water is derived from the Red Sea without directly overlooking it.

The quiet, fine-sanded and wave-free beaches make sea voyages, in a boat or a yacht, a fairy tale. «El-Gouna» Six Neighbordhoods

El-Gouna consists of six stylish neighborhoods; “Marina

town”, is privileged by viewing water and yachts fronting the chalets. The neighborhoods’ platform can contain more than 126 yachts.

“Mediterranean Neighborhood”, where the Mediterra-nean-style-like villas and chalets, overlooking artificial lakes and are surrounded by tropical trees and grass giving a mag-ical touch to the neighborhood. “Golf Neighborhood” char-acterized by greenery surrounding, the colorful buildings and overlooking a huge artificial lake and golf courses. The neighborhood embraces two majestic hotels; “Golf Club” and “Steigenberger”.

“The Nubian Neighborhood” where buildings and villas are built to follow the Nubian style.

The buildings are topped with domes similar to the Arabian style. It is located between down town and the Italian neighborhood. “The Hill Neighborhood”; built on a 15m above the sea level hill, where you can have a panoramic view.

“Little Italy Neighborhood” is located between down town and Marina Town, where the umbrellas, sea chairs

and shiny colored buildings are designed by the famous Italian architect Reberto Boni.

El-Gouna consists of Down Town, Tamr Henna and Marina Abu Tig; the three main districts with boutiques, restaurants, night clubs and shopping malls; the later hosts El-Gouna Radio station.

The resort is pervaded by water canals , allowing a private beach for each house, villa or chalet. Atop almost all of them, stone bridges are built to facilitate movements. Furthermore, El-Gouna’s night-life is marvelous.

At night, the shops, cafes and restaurants are active, with bright colors and soft music to transfer the city into a European resort.

At night, tourists exchange their sea wears with night ones wandering on foot, by cars or scooters to attend the campfires and enjoy shopping, i.e. Kafr El Gouna and the new Down Town. Dinner in sea food restaurants is an experience which one should not miss in El-Gouna.

El-Gouna is the perfect place for youth, as they enjoy the freedom and privacy at the same time.

In El-Gouna youth will experience new adventures every day; starting with visiting Giftun Islands (a half-hour sea trip and one of Egypt’s most important reserves, where half of the world sea gulls live) to diving, coral reef discovering and yacht touring.

El-Gouna is considered the best destination for tourists, who are interested in Egypt and its glamourous atmosphere.

For a cultural adventurous tour, go to the nearby desert, enjoy the clear sky, while drinking the delicious Bedouin tea.

For years, El-Gouna kept on hosting events and meetings for the most important international companies, which gives the opportunity to the participants to enjoy the different activities and a happy time.

Accommodation prices in El-Gouna are expensive compared to Sharm El Sheikh.

Although there is no police but only security, El-Gouna is a safe place with no crime records of harassment or murder for a long time. El-Gouna City has four schools; German, international, private and experimental schools. Supermarkets sell traditional goods with their usual prices.

Consequently, El-Gouna is not only tourists’ heaven but also the retired people dream, who need to enjoy the rest of their lives in tranquility, meditation and relaxation.
