Next month, I will be back to the more enjoyable aspects of Club life. Thank you for bearing with me through a column focused on “business.” It might not be enjoyable, but I thought it important enough to share with you. Thank you for the many words of encouragement and gratitude I have accepted (on behalf of the entire Board and staff) from scores of members since I began my presidency. I have heard a few complaints from some members, and while it is every member’s right to complain, I heard some things that are simply not true. For example, our Club is audited annually by an independent firm and any member may request and receive a copy of the latest audit by notifying the Club. Also, please know during this time of austerity that no member of the Board of Governors receives free dues. The modest expense allowance that had been available to Board members for decades was appropriately halved last year and entirely eliminated this year. I am very proud of the dedicated work of the Board of Governors and disappointed when it is the subject of uninformed criticism. Of course, the graciousness and camaraderie of members far outweighs any complaining I have heard.

I hope the summer has given way to a beautiful, enjoyable fall for you and yours. Thank you for your membership and support, and I look forward to seeing you at the Club.

Fellow members-

This month I must break away from the great traditions and events of

the Club, about which I prefer to speak in this column, to talk a little bit about the “business” of the Club - membership and finances.

I want specifically to discuss with you, first, the Club’s needs, next, the plan for success to which the Board and management have agreed and, finally, how you can help in carrying out our plan.

First, the need. The Club’s needs are, in my view, primarily owing to the reduction in the member headcount it has sustained since the onset of the great recession in 2008. We have approximately 15 percent fewer members on October 1, 2011 than we had on October 1, 2008. This reduction places pressure on the Club’s finances because those absent members are no longer paying dues and otherwise spending money at the Club. So, the Club needs to pare down its expenses and increase revenue wherever it can do so responsibly.

Next, the plan. The Board and management recently took a hard look at the next two fiscal years, which run from September 1, 2011 through August 31, 2013 and decided that imposing an assessment on our loyal membership and making significant cuts in membership services is not the way to go. This Club exists for the benefit of its membership, and we are more than pleased that you pay your dues and enjoy the amenities of your Club and you should be obliged to do nothing more. Having made that decision, one option was to capture any additional revenue we can, and the staff has done an excellent job of positioning our food and beverage, catering and overnight guest rooms business to increase per-member revenue nicely despite the unfavorable economy.

The other option was to pare down expenses as much as possible while still maintaining first-rate service and facilities for our members. Working together, the Board and management cut more than one million dollars in expenses from the combined budget for fiscal years 2012 and 2013. As

many of you know, this involved a staff restructuring that involved the elimination of positions that were occupied by two fine, longtime employees. Making significant cuts is never easy, but on behalf of the Board and management, I can tell you doing so was the responsible thing to do to protect our Club and set it on a course for continued success and renewed growth.

Finally, the request. The most important thing I can ever ask of a member is to continue to support the Club with your time, enthusiasm and membership. Belonging to the MAC never has been and never will be a job. That having been said, please keep an eye on the monthly membership column to learn about the Platinum membership drive, which will be rolled out this fall. Beyond the support of your membership, there is no better way to support your Club than to nominate a new member or two to our ranks who will come to love and support the MAC as you do. Additionally, although a mandatory assessment is not, in my view, the wise path to revenue enhancement, I know there are some members who are willing to make a voluntary contribution to help the MAC. For example, many members voluntarily support the MAC Preservation Fund, the Charitable Society for Children and the Employee’s Christmas Bonus fund. You will all receive a note shortly asking you to consider a voluntary gift to support the Club itself. Although, as I mentioned above, our budget is in shape for the coming fiscal years, the Board and management are endeavoring to establish a capital reserve fund for any capital needs or unforeseen emergencies for which the budget has not accounted. Any voluntary gifts received will be separated from our operating account and will only be spent with the consent of the Board. Again, it is enough to support your club with your membership and no one should feel obligated to give, but I know there are many who want to give over and above their membership and those members should know the Club will benefit from their generosity. I am pleased to announce that the fifteen members of the Board of Governors have kicked off this voluntary

Salute our nation’s veterans at a celebration for those who have

served our country. On Thursday, Nov. 10, the MAC will host the 2011 Veterans Day Commemoration at the Downtown Clubhouse. Guest speakers, a delicious lunch and musical entertainment will be just a few of the highlights of the special day. Show your support for the military men and women.

This year’s guest speaker will be Lt. General Robert R. Allardice, USAF. Lt. General Allardice is Commander 18th Air Force and the Vice Commander Designee for the U.S. Air Mobility Command.

The Veterans Room located on the Downtown Clubhouse’s

4th floor continues to add to its impressive collection of memorabilia. Dan Green recently donated to the Club a framed picture commemorating the distinguished military service of three MAC members; his father, George Green, Robert Croak and Robert Murphy. These three brave men saw combat at some of the most historically significant battles of World War II.

George Green served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1939-46. He saw combat at Bougainville, Guam and Iwo Jima. Green earned numerous honors during a distinguished career of service including the Iwo Jima Bronze Star and the Purple Heart with Gold Star.

MAC Remembers World War II HeroesRobert Croak served in the U.S. Navy

Reserves, 1943-46. On June 6, 1944, he was part of the D-Day landing at Omaha Beach, on the coast of France.

Robert Murphy served in the U.S.

Navy, 1943-46. He served on the USS Cecil, which played an important role in the invasion of Okinawa. The USS Cecil received two battle stars for World War II service.

High school football is in full swing and your children have been hitting the books. With the newness of the school year over, this month brings the

excitement of the homecoming dance to high schoolers. The MAC will make your children’s or grandchildren’s homecoming night memorable and elegant. The MAC can host homecoming dinners in the Jack Buck Grill or Rendezvous Room.

Your child or grandchild and their friends will enjoy a delicious three-course dinner at the Club for only $35 per person, which includes a Caesar salad, entrée, dessert, soda, ice tea or coffee and service charge. Three entrée options are available and include: Prime Rib, Chicken Modiga or Fried Shrimp.

The Rendezvous Room can accommodate groups up to 50. The MAC also has several banquet rooms which can accommodate groups up to 400. Save money on a limo too! Rent the MAC shuttle bus for the evening. The bus seats up to 30 and costs $100 per hour with a three-hour minimum rental.

Dine at St. Clair Country Club

The MAC has a reciprocal golf agreement with St. Clair Country Club. Now, MAC

The Jack Buck Grill is now re-open after a 4-week closure. The Grill was

closed for routine cleaning as well as life safety updates. The MAC thanks you for your patience during the closure. The Jack Buck Grill underwent a deep cleaning. Life safety updates funded by the Preservation Foundation were also completed. A new fire exit from the Jack Buck Grill to the street was installed. The exit features a ramp that replaced a 9-inch step previously in its place. Fire-rated walls were also installed in the hallway of the Jack Buck Grill leading to the exit. The exit now is at street level.

The Grill also has a new fall menu featuring delicious, seasonal dishes. Stop in for a bite to eat. The MAC is also a great place to gather before or after Rams games.

Lap Swimming

The outdoor pool at West is closed for the season, but you

can continue your lap swimming at the Downtown Clubhouse. If you swim enough laps you could qualify for Swimmer of the Month honors.

Piloxing

Burn fat and sculpt your muscles with

a popular new exercise class that will whip you into shape. Piloxing combines pilates and boxing in a fun and challenging way.

Piloxing combines power, agility and speed training from boxing with the flexibility and sculpting you get from pilates. The class also includes upbeat dance moves that guarantee you have a great time in the class. Weighted gloves are optional, but can be used to increase toning in the arms and cardio.

The triathlon is among the most challenging athletic competitions

because it requires endurance and proficiency in three different disciplines: swimming, cycling and running. The fourth annual MAC Sprint Triathlon attracted a record crowd of fifty-eight athletes to the West Clubhouse to participate in a race consisting of a 300-yard swim, followed by a 12-mile bike ride and concluding with a 3-mile run. For the second year in a row, Trey Hogan won the men’s division. Lisa Holley captured the women’s division.

Last fall, platform tennis returned to the roof of the Downtown Clubhouse. This fall, enjoy a game of tennis and a bird’s eye view of the city. The

original MAC court was restored last fall. New lights, net and paint highlight the improvements. The sport is most popular in the fall and winter. If you enjoy racquet sports, give platform tennis a try. The court can be reserved by calling the Athletic Department at 539-4482. Paddles and balls are available for sale in the Pro Shop.

National Fencing Tournament Coming to MAC West

For the first time, the MAC will host a national fencing

tournament, the Fencers Academy Super Youth Circuit. The Super Youth Circuit (SYC), sanctioned by USA Fencing, is a group of events held throughout the country for youth fencers in various age groups in all weapons that provide an opportunity for young athletes to experience elite competition, earn national points and prepare for future national events. It is also a qualifier for other national youth events.

Missouri Athletic Club members are welcome to watch the matches both days for free. Watch some of the top boys and girls from around the country compete in this fast-paced, exciting sport.

Cricket Club in Philadelphia, but is originally from Santiago, Spain. He has represented Spain in a number of World and European Individual and Team Championships. His highest PSA ranking was 110. He was also the National Hardball Singles Champion in 2007.

Yago arrives just in time to kick off our season, with the doubles league starting on Oct. 1.

I want to congratulate our top junior Reed Whitney. After a very successful season last year playing up in the U/17’s, he is now about to start the new season ranked 11 in the country, his highest national ranking to date. Great job Reed! Keep up the good work!

The 4th Annual MAC Golf ClassicGolfers Hit the Links for Preservation Foundation

The beautiful Country Club at the Legends was the site of the 4th annual MAC Golf Classic.

Members and guests hit the links for a day of fun and friendly competition. Proceeds from the tournament benefited the MAC Preservation Foundation.

The event began with lunch, followed by the tournament’s shotgun start at noon. Following the round, golfers gathered in the clubhouse for cocktails, dinner and an auction. The team of Stacy Hastie, Tony Giordano and Larry Fuse won the tournament.

Stop by the Jack Buck Grill before Blues hockey and Billikens basketball games this

season. You can park in the MAC garage and dine at the Club prior to regular season home games. When you dine in the Jack Buck Grill, you can enjoy round-trip transportation to and from the Scottrade Center or Chaifetz Arena.

The MAC shuttle bus leaves approximately 30 minutes and 10 minutes prior to game time for hockey and 20 minutes for SLU games. Following the games, enjoy a nightcap in the Jack Buck Grill. Bus service could be cancelled due to prior commitments. Call the front desk (314-231-7220) the day of the game to confirm shuttle service.

The shuttle bus will be raring to go when the Blues face off in the home opener this month. The Billikens will tip off their season at the Chaifetz Arena in November.

The candidates for the prestigious Missouri Athletic Club Sports

Personality of the Year are set. Jack Buck helped establish the award in 1970 to annually honor the top local sports figure.

The candidates for the 2011 Sports Personality of the Year are David Backes, Lance Berkman, Matt Holliday, Steven Jackson and James Laurinaitis.

Forward David Backes had another strong season for the Blues. In 2011, he earned his first trip to the NHL All-Star game and dished out three assists. On Sept. 9, Backes was named the 20th captain in team history.

Cardinals outfielder Lance Berkman made an immediate impact during his first year in St. Louis. Following an injury-plagued 2010 season, he had a bounce back season in 2011. Berkman was a reliable slugger in the middle of the Cardinals lineup and earned a trip to the 2011 All-Star game.

Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday had a difficult start to his 2011 season. Following opening day, he had an emergency appendectomy. Holliday returned quickly and provided power as the Cardinals cleanup hitter. He was named an All-Star and was the starting leftfielder the National League team.

Last season, running back Steven Jackson was a key in helping the Rams become the most improved team in the NFL. He topped 1,000 yards rushing for the sixth-consecutive season. Following the season, Jackson was named to the 2011 NFL Pro Bowl.

In just his second season, Rams linebacker James Laurinaitis emerged as the leader of the defense. He started every game and recorded 114 tackles. Laurinaitis added three sacks and one interception.

The winner of the 2011 Sports Personality of the Year will be selected by the members of the Missouri Athletic Club. The Sports Personality of the Year, along with other distinguished members of the St. Louis sports community will be honored at the 42nd annual Jack Buck Sports Awards Banquet on Wednesday, Dec. 14. A battle is brewing on the MAC West tennis courts. Get your front

row seat on courts 5 & 6 at MAC West on Friday, Oct. 7, to see two exciting matches beginning at 6:30 p.m. The first match will be a battle between members as Past Governor Jim and Mina McMullin will face off against Rich Striler and Past Governor Margaret May. Following the member match, tennis pros Scott Stutz, Mac McDonald, Mario Barretto and Patrick McNally, will play a doubles match.

The annual Tennis Exhibition is sponsored by the MAC Charitable Society for Children to raise money for the 2011 charities: Delta Gamma Center, Little Bit Foundation and TASK. Representatives from the three charities, as well as members of the CSC will be on hand to share information about the charities.

Nominations are still being accepted for the 2012 charities. Three charities will be selected and each will receive any money raised throughout the year by the MAC CSC. The deadline for nominations is Saturday, Oct. 29. For a charity to be considered it must be: a local charity, non-denominational, family oriented with an emphasis on service to children and for human welfare. Nominations can be emailed to CSC Chairman Sam Hopmeier at [email protected]. Along with the charity name, please provide a one-page fact sheet with information about the charity. Also, please make sure the charity is listed with St. Louis Better Business Bureau in their Charity Review section. On Tuesday, Nov. 8, the charities will be presented to the selection committee at a meeting at MAC West at 7:30 a.m. The nominating member or employee must be present at the meeting for a five-minute presentation on the charity. The final recommendations of charities selected will be given to the Board of Governors for approval. If you have a charity that you work closely with, nominate it today and help the MAC give back to the community.

The Rod and Gun Club is hosting the 2011 Interclub

Shotgun Tournament at the Strathalbyn Farms Club on Friday, Oct. 14. The MAC will enter a maximum of 10 shooters. Everyone will shoot 100 targets. The MAC needs a maximum of eight sporting clays shooters and two skeet shooters. The four best sporting clay scores and the one best skeet score for each club will determine the champions. Shells are not provided. Please plan on staying at the club for awards, appetizers and drinks after the shoot.

aren’t thinking about the work that goes into perfecting the plate before you. A talented team of chefs and staff are hard at work taking your meal from individual ingredients to a cuisine masterpiece.

The West Clubhouse is pleased to announce that Chef Kelly Sarlone will assume the role of Chef de Cuisine. Chef Sarlone has been with the Club for over seven years in various positions in the culinary operation and apprenticed under both Chef Owens and Chef Unger. She has been an integral part of the success of the culinary team.

During her time at the MAC, she attended Forest Park Community College and received her degree

in Culinary Arts and Restaurant Management.

She is an active member of the American Culinary Federation and is a Certified Culinarian. She will have the responsibility for the entire culinary

operation at MAC West.Chef Sarlone gathers

her culinary inspiration from a variety of places. She tries to use as many

seasonal products as she can get because she says they taste better. She also looks at trends in magazines, blogs and websites that chefs around the world are using. She likes to take these trends and put a MAC spin on them. Chef Sarlone also gained a lot of her skills and

inspiration from the three chefs she has worked under at the MAC.

Chef Sarlone is assisted by Sous Chef Kevin Weidlick. Chef Weidlick is the Morning Sous Chef/ Purchasing Manager at MAC West. He is invaluable at ensuring that all items needed for members’ meals and other activities arrive in a timely manner. He has been an employee of the MAC for the past 14 years and his expertise is invaluable to the culinary team. Chef Weidlick has been in the culinary industry for 20 years and has worked at 10 different establishments before coming to the MAC. He has held his current position for three years. Chef Weidlick has been awarded the Club Managers Association of America McGuffey Scholarship two times.

MAC Chefs “Kookin’ for Kids”

and Beverage department recently cooked up a delicious dish in support of a local children’s charity. Executive Chef Bart Philipps, Chef Kelly Sarlone and Director of Catering Linda Soncasie teamed up to represent the MAC at the St. Vincent Home for Children’s “Kookin’ for Kids.”

The annual event is in its 20th year. Each year, local restaurants team up with members of the local media to raise money in support of St. Vincent’s. St. Vincent’s assists troubled children in the area. The organization provides counseling, vocational training, alternative special education and a residential treatment center.

Clubhouse Improvements

The MAC continuously strives to keep the Downtown Clubhouse up-to-date and an enjoyable place for members and guests.

Staff has been working to make improvements to the Club. Check out the latest updates. Lobby FloorsThe floor in the lobby is the original Tennessee Pink marble the Club has had since 1916. The type of marble is prevalent in old buildings in St. Louis and can also be found in Grand Central Station in New York and other prominent buildings. Recently, the floors were re-done. The existing layers of wax were ground off of the tile down to the stone. Then a diamond polishing was used to polish the stone, allowing for the true beauty of the stone to be shown. Oriental RugThe Palace Oriental rug located in the lobby and donated by Mr. Nagle has been repaired and cleaned by Asadorian Oriental Rug Company. The beautiful rug is located in the seating area in the lobby at the Downtown Clubhouse. Fall FoliageThe front of the Downtown Clubhouse recently got an updated look for fall. New plants and bushes were put in the wall along Washington Ave. Be sure to admire the beautiful fall foliage next time you are driving into the Club.

Kids and adults are encouraged to come decked out in their sassiest, funniest, scariest and goofiest costumes. Kids will get the chance to trick or treat from car to car in the parking lot.
