Message from the Conference ChairSense, Scents, Cents, of Architecture

The original title of the 2011 convention theme was to be “Smells like Architecture” as in the figurative state of mind that consumes the practice of, experience in, construction of and quest for architecture.

The meaning of architecture is different for each and every person. For me, it is a mode of thinking that goes beyond the visual and transcends into the very core of our being. Design is within us all, and so the inexplicable feeling we get when we are in a well designed space (be it natural or man-made) is just that…hard to explain. For some, it is the way the light dances through the canopy of the column like trees within a wooded area or the smell of freshly crushed pine straw wafting up from the forest floor.

For others, it is the sound of footfall on an aged wooden floor and the rhythmic creaking sound that laments of our forbearers. Yet, for all, architecture is, at its’ core, a sensory experience.

The convention this year has been tailored to run the gamut of all of the ”senses” of architecture in an effort to gain a fresh perspective on how we each view it on a day to day basis. It is our goal that participants will gain an appreciation for inserting good sense into good architecture and garner tools to help use less of the clients’ cents in budget minded architecture. As far as the scent of architecture goes, you’ll have to decide whether it is figurative or literal for yourself. Above all, please have fun and keep your noses out front.

Andrew C. Herdeg, AIAKeynote SpeakerPartner at Lake Flato ArchitectsNature / Place / Craft: Recent Work of Lake Flato Architects (FR01)Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.

Andrew Herdeg, AIA joined Lake Flato in 1996 and has broad experience designing, detailing and managing numerous types of architectural projects. He now leads the firm's Higher Education Studio and oversees the firm's Marketing Department. Andrew has also been an active member of his community, serving on the City of Alamo Heights' Board of Adjustment since 2000. From 2002 to 2005, he led an effort to develop Neighborhood Design Standards, a Tree Preservation Ordinance and a Demolition Ordinance. In response to these efforts, the city of Alamo Heights incorporated many of these initiatives into the City Code in 2007.

PRESENTATION SUMMARYThe presentation will examine three recent Lake Flato projects in three very different

environmental contexts as examples of unique site specific design. A LEED Platinum Visitor Center located along the Gulf Coast, an urban adaptive reuse corporate headquarters and a new campus in the Desert Southwest frame the discussion of how Nature, Place and Craft overlay on program and budget to drive sustainable strategies and the design process. Each project also was challenged by unique circumstances: environment, budget and schedule. The presentation will discuss strategies the design team employed to proactively address these challenges along with both the successes and compromises inherent in the process.

PRESENTATION SUMMARY:Chapter 17 in the International Building Code (IBC) sets forth provisions for special

inspections. The Chapter, entitled “Structural Tests and Special Inspections” requires a series of qualifications, tests, and documentation protocols for various components of construction. However, the application of these requirements in the everyday construction project is often confusing. The designer must ask himself questions like:• When should we be applying this significant enhancement to construction quality

monitoring?• Whose responsibility is it to get this accomplished?• Who should retain the Special Inspector?

This presentation will overview the concept of Special Inspections as provided by the IBC and it will address its application thus far in Louisiana. Drawing from a national practice, the presenter will overview the application of Special Inspections across the country in an effort to predict how this responsibility will impact our State in the future.

PRESENTATION SUMMARYThe Intern Development Program (IDP) is a comprehensive training program created

jointly in the 1970's by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) and the American Institute of Architects, administered by NCARB. Over the past 3 years, IDP has undergone substantial restructuring to address contemporary architectural practice. This seminar, facilitated by Louisiana's State IDP Coordinator, provides a brief overview of IDP and a detailed presentation of changes that impact students, interns, supervisors, and mentors. The presentation will conclude with opportunities for discussion and questions.

Peter L. Pfeier, FAIABarley & Pfeier ArchitectsA Balanced and Inspired Approach to Green Home Building-Sound Design Trumps "Eco Bling" (FR03)

Friday, 3:15 p.m. - 5:15 p.m.Peter Pfeiffer is a LEED accredited professional Architect, Interior Designer, and

Building Scientist who has spent the past 33 years designing and developing pragmatic high performance buildings and homes.

In 2004 he was named a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects for his life-long commitment to "mainstreaming green building in North America”. He is a founding principal of Barley & Pfeiffer Architects, a firm recognized nationally for its pioneering use of environmentally responsive design and construction techniques. Their work has been published both in the United States and abroad in diverse venues.

The National Association of Home Builders honored him as the “National Green Advocate of the Year” in 2003 for his life-long achievements in “mainstreaming” green building. Peter has been an active charter member of the NAHB Green Building Subcommittee since its inception in 1999 and has been active in the US Green Building Council’s LEED for Homes program.

PRESENTATION SUMMARYDo you need to invest in expensive water-heaters, solar panels, and ERVs to provide

real value and to stand out in a competitive market place? Will incorporating them in your projects improve their “saleability”? How does one articulate the value of and sell thoughtful programming, passive solar design, and enhanced natural ventilation attributes when marketing a green home or commercial project?

The complexity of how design decisions and component selections interact to effect health, durability, and conservation of resources in such a way that appeals to the buying public will be addressed in an enlightening format relevant to residential building professionals. Advanced green building SCIENCE strategies will also be addressed, specifically what worked and what has not worked out so well.

Brian Daschbach, CFMTechnical Representative Smart Vent, Inc.Specifying Foundation Flood Vents for Building Sustainability, Durability, and Performance (FR04)Friday, 4:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Brian Daschbach is the technical representative for Smart Vent. Smart Vent manufactures automatic foundation flood vents that are used in residential and commercial buildings within the flood plain. Brian graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University in 2006 with a Bachelor’s in Marketing and has five years experience in the building industry as a manufacturer’s representative. In April of 2010, he was awarded the title of Certified Floodplain Manager, by the Association of State Floodplain Managers, Inc.

Brian has a working knowledge of building code for enclosures that are located within the floodplain, which is becoming increasingly important as the floodplain continues to grow. Brian has made technical presentations to architects, engineers, surveyors and building officials throughout the State of Louisiana. He is a member of BOAL, LFMA, and the ASFPM.

PRESENTATION SUMMARYThis presentation provides a complete review of FEMA’s Technical Bulletin “Openings in

Foundation Walls and Walls of Enclosures.” Applicable codes, flood opening options, proper placement, and the NFIP Elevation certificate are all extensively reviewed. Participants will learn how to identify the effects of hydrostatic pressure on building sustainability; the role of foundation flood vents on building enclosure performance, be able to identify FEMA regulations and building codes as they relate to sustaining foundations in flood hazard areas; and will be advised on the difference between engineered and non-engineered foundation flood openings in terms of optimizing health, durability and maintenance.
