“Our Lady of the Chumash”
It’s a day for celebration for us as werevel, along with Bishop Robert Barron, inthe canonization of St. Junipero Serra byPope Francis. It’s also important to recognizethe Chumash Indians, who number amongthe Native Americans Padre Serra came toserve.
Helping us maintain that focus, MaritaRedondo, the daughter of our own Clovisand Belinda Peres, is the fine art painter whorendered the beautiful “Our Lady of theChumash” for our parish. She grew up inCamarillo and raised her family in southernCalifornia. She now lives and works in SanFrancisco’s North Bay, where she is a wife, mother, grandmother, high school art teacher, and artist. She writes, “Teaching art to youngpeople gives me energy, as they never ceaseto amaze me. Their curiosity, humor, transparency, and overwhelming potential, fills me with love and gratitude that I am able toshare in their lives.”
You can see that her heart is perfectly disposed for creating artwork that will inspireus, invite us into prayer, connect us with our Blessed Mother, all the while reminding us ofthe Chumash people who were the first stewards of the land where we live.
People of faith throughout the world have made Mary, themother of our Lord Jesus, their own, matching their coloring andclothing to hers. It’s so right to do the same here where we live, remembering our newly canonized patron’s great devotion toMary, and envisioning her as native to our own home.
Siempre adelante!Fr. PatrickPastor
