Journey Through the Bible A Stop at Second Kings

"Feeling Stuck and Captive" Jon Hathorn

"It is when we are captive, stuck and trapped that we most appreciate our freedom and liberty." Jon Hathorn

We often ask - "How did I get here?"

Warning Signs are important

OVERVIEW OF 2 Kings

Second Kings continues the story of the divided Kingdom. First Kings was a time when Solomon married 700 times, and these marriages were bargaining tools for the safety of the nation. Not only was it wrong to have multiple wives, but Solomon allowed ‘the false gods’ into his home. He failed to keep the command of loving the Lord above all else.

A little history lesson is very important here - Assyria invades the northern country, Israel, and the northern kingdom is scattered and many are taken captive. Judah remained very normal at this time.

But then the more powerful nation of Babylon took over Assyria, and destroyed the capital city of Nineveh. Babylon goes so far as to destroy Judah, and actually destroys Jerusalem, the walls, the temple, and takes many captives back to Babylon. Babylon didn’t just take anyone, they took the most valuable people, the wisest youth, even Daniel was taken. The

people of God no longer inhabit the Promised Land and all hope is lost. The people of God have been annihilated, scattered, and exiled.

There are several memorable miracles that take place in II Kings - two people are raised from the dead, Elijah goes directly to heaven without ever dying, the waters of the Jordan river are rolled back two times. The Work of God in the lives of people continues.

It is during this book that many prophets speak. Amos and Hosea were God’s messengers to Israel in the North. Isaiah, Joel, Micah, Nahum, Habbakuk, Zephaniah, and Jeremiah prophesied to Judah in the South. The prophet Elisha performs many miracles. During these 400 years of the divided kingdom, the north has 19 evil kings, one after another. In the south there are several good kings, the most famous being Joash, Uzziah, Hezekiah, and the young king Josiah.

A key message of the book is that, even though there were warnings directly from God through the prophets, the kings, and the countries, the people continue to live in sin and fail to follow the Lord. A great application would be “Sin is real, sin brings judgement.”

THREE WAYS FREEDOM COMES TO US

1. Remembering you are a Child of God

2. Thinking Biblically and Eternally

3. Being Prepared Before It Happens

“The main reason freedom isn’t always present is because it takes time, energy and effort to get rid of those things that hold us captive and then additional work to keep it away.”

Prayer Requests
