FROM THE PASTOR: Thank God I Am Not Like Him The Pharisee in the gospel story thought that if he said his prayers, gave his regular donation, and followed the

fasting laws, he would be right with God. Pray, pay, and obey, as some in the church once put it. But he missed the obvious serious sin. He was rife with pride. “O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity or even like this

tax collector.” He was so full of himself that there was no room for God.

The tax collector, however, could only offer one thing: his humble self. He presented himself just as he was and hoped in the mercy of God. God had room to operate in his life. And he left the temple justified. Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.

Holy Day of Opportunity - November 1 Friday, November 1, is the Solemnity of All Saints. Some saints are well-known and many more are not. We probably know or have known saints - a grandparent, a dear friend. The Church decided that we should celebrate them all.

Saints are heroes of the faith. They are “warriors” for the Lord fighting against human and spiritual evil. They are models to imitate. They exemplify qualities that we would do well to make part of our journey of life. And they are intercessors on our behalf to the Lord.

Join with your fellow Catholics for this liturgical festival and enjoy another opportunity to worship our God and unite ourselves with Christ in the Eucharist. Check the bulletin and website for the Mass Schedule.

All Souls - Praying For The Dead

The shorter days, cooler nights and trees shedding their leaves are signs that the “death” of winter is not far behind. The rhythm of the seasons north of the equator influenced the development of the liturgical calendar in the Catholic Church. And so she dedicates the month of

November to praying for the souls in Purgatory.

Over the centuries, the Church has emphasized the corporal and spiritual works of mercy as a response to the Good News of salvation. One of the spiritual works of mercy is “To Pray for The Living and the Dead.”

What a source of comfort that can be for the grieving family. They can still offer care and support to their loved one even after death. As we pray for family members

and friends as they set off for a trip that they will arrive safely to their destination, so we can pray for those who are “traveling” to God that they will arrive safely to their eternal home with God in heaven.

General Elections Are November 5th in PA

For some time, we have come to realize the impact that judges have on our culture, moral climate, and the role of government in our lives. For example, the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that life in the womb only merits limited constitutional protection of law and re-defined the nature of marriage. The general election is Tuesday, November 5. There are local and county contests that certainly affect our daily lives. There are also important state contests for PA Superior and Commonwealth Courts.

For voter information about the latter, please go to pafamily.org.

A Scripture Quote to Ponder and Obey

If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 2:7-14

T H O U G H T S O N G I V I N G :

“…for whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” (Luke 18:14)

Pride and ego is the root cause of most of our sins. Thinking your time is so valuable, your talent is better than anyone else and your money gives you status is another way of making those things “gods” before God. Remember all those gifts were God-given. Instead we should be humbled by God’s abundant generosity and our hearts should overflow with gratitude.

A family member may take their loved one’s candle at the end of whichever Mass you attend.
