October 27th 7:00pm: Ethical Care and the End of Life: A Catho-lic Perspective. Executive Director of the Iowa Catholic Confer-ence, Tom Chapman, will be giving a talk in the Social Hall. He represents the official public policy voice of the Catholic Bishops in Iowa and will be discussing the policies related to respecting the dignity of every human person and our own participation in politi-cal life of society.

Faith Formation classes will be held as usual this week. PRIEST AND DEACON APPRECIATION will be held the weekend of Nov. 5th & 6th after all Masses. Note cards will be available the weekend of Oct. 29th & 30th for you to write on to our Priests and Deacons and return them by Nov. 5th & 6th to the RED BOX which will be near the front entrance in the Narthex. Here’s a word from one of our in-terns on what Anchor means to her: “Anchor is something con-sistent. It’s not something that will go away but rather it is always there. It’s tied down and heavy to lift. When the waves are calm and even when they are shaky, the anchor will always be there. It keeps us grounded. It’s our hope. There is an interesting twist we find in today’s gospel when we hear Jesus’ parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector praying in the temple. The Pharisee is “praying to himself.” It doesn’t mean he was praying silently. It seems to mean something a lot more troubling, that he is praying to himself; that God is not his prayer’s intended audience. The words of the Pharisee are very much centered on himself: he makes claims about his character. He highlights his own admirable activities. Good stewards of their prayer lives know that a prayer of praise and thanksgiving should focus on the goodness of God. Do our prayers of thanksgiving always stay focused on God’s unfathomable, immeasurable good-ness and generosity?

event on Sunday, October 23 from 4-6PM in the St. Cecilia park-ing lot & multipurpose room. Trunk or Treat is a fun way for kids to trick-or-treat by going from car to car and playing games/collecting candy. Parishioners are invited to hand out candy/prizes to all trick or treaters. 4:00-4:30PM – Park your car/van and get set up to hand out goodies (decorating & games optional) 4:30-5:15PM – The treating will begin! 5:15-6:00 PM– All participants are invited to have walking tacos & fruit/veggies - served in the St. Cecilia Education Center (gluten free option available) This event is sponsored by the St. Cecilia School Family School Association, the St. Cecilia Parish Welcoming Committee, and the St. Cecilia School 1st & 4th grade families. The 5th Grade Class will be sponsoring a Pizza Ranch Tip Fundraiser on Monday, October 24 from 5PM-9PM at the Ames Pizza Ranch at 1404 Boston Ave. All tips and donations will go toward the parent-sponsored 5th Grade Class Trip. This year’s trip will include a service project and tour of St. Cecilia Cathedral in Omaha as well as an overnight at the zoo. Please join us as we serve you at Pizza Ranch. In addition, the 5th graders have slips to turn in for an additional $2 toward the event! Please see the school office or any 5th grade family to pick up a $2 slip.

As we begin the Fall schedules we find there is an ongoing need for Tuition Assis-tance contributions to assist families with tuition for the school, for faith formation and for youth ministry. With the educational opportunities we have at St. Cecilia, it is a blessing to see so many families wanting to help their children grow in their faith. Some families, however, experience financial setbacks from time to time and really appreciate the assistance we offer to help them. IRA Charitable Rollover Now Permanent: Congress and President Obama have reauthorized and made permanent the IRA charitable rollover. Anyone 70 1/2 or older can make a char-itable gift up to $100,000 directly from his/her IRA to any ap-proved nonprofit organization including all Archdiocesan parish-es, schools, Our Faith STO, Catholic Charities, The Catholic Foundation or any other archdiocesan ministry. Movie Knight: Movie Knight: The Knights and Sanctity of Life will host a movie night for Respect Life Month. The feature film, Amazing Grace is a 2006 British-American biographical dra-ma film about the campaign against slave trade in the British Em-pire. Good Neighbor Emergency Assistance, Inc. presents the 2016 annual Combined Choir Concert on Sunday, November 6, 2016 at Collegiate United Methodist Church/Wesley Foundation, 2622 Lincoln Way in Ames. There will be performances by 11 choirs and musical ensemble, including bell choirs and a chil-dren’s choir. A free will donation will be collected. Doors open that day at 1:30PM.
