Announcements Here is what we recommend when you're trying to decide on trips for 2017: Eighth Graders - NCYC (2nd Choice: Steubenville) New Students to the Area: Freshmen/Sophomore Retreat Freshmen - Freshmen Retreat, Steubenville (2nd Choice: NCYC) Sophomores - Sophomore Retreat, LTLC (2nd Choice: Steubenville) Please visit our website http://ameslifeteen.weebly.com/ to sign up by December 1st. On September 11, we announced that we are re-branding our programs! St. Cecilia and St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Youth Ministry will now be known as Anchor! We welcome all middle schoolers to Anchor EDGE and all high schoolers to Anchor Life Teen, Anchor YDisciple, Anchor retreats, etc. Anchor is a symbol of unity and hope in Christ. Here’s a word from one of our in-terns on what Anchor means to her: “Anchor is something con-sistent. It’s not something that will go away but rather it is always there. It’s tied down and heavy to lift. When the waves are calm and even when they are shaky, the anchor will always be there. It keeps us grounded. It’s our hope. It is the same when we look to the eyes of Jesus. He keeps us grounded. He is our hope.” –Becca

Page 3: October 23, 2016 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Saint Cecilia · 2016. 10. 23. · hear Jesus’ parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector praying in the temple. The Pharisee

There is an interesting twist we find in today’s gospel when we hear Jesus’ parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector praying in the temple. The Pharisee is “praying to himself.” It doesn’t mean he was praying silently. It seems to mean something a lot more troubling, that he is praying to himself; that God is not his prayer’s intended audience. The words of the Pharisee are very much centered on himself: he makes claims about his character. He highlights his own admirable activities. Good stewards of their prayer lives know that a prayer of praise and thanksgiving should focus on the goodness of God. Do our prayers of thanksgiving always stay focused on God’s unfathomable, immeasurable good-ness and generosity?

Giving opportunity for Tuition Assistance. As we begin the Fall schedules we find there is an ongoing need for Tuition Assis-tance contributions to assist families with tuition for the school, for faith formation and for youth ministry. With the educational opportunities we have at St. Cecilia, it is a blessing to see so many families wanting to help their children grow in their faith. Some families, however, experience financial setbacks from time to time and really appreciate the assistance we offer to help them. Simply mark your contribution according to the area of education you desire when you send it into the office. Thank you for considering a contribution to the assistance program.

Birthright offers free pregnancy tests and assistance. Confidential. 108 Hayward Ave. 292-8414 www.birthright.org.
