A Note from the Pastor ’s Desk

Dear Parishioners,

In the current issue of Catholic New York, you may have seen a picture of me blessing the

tomb of Cardinal Cooke after celebrating a Mass of Remembrance at the Cathedral on the 33rd

anniversary of the Cardinals’ passing. Since no auxiliary bishop was available on October 6,

Cardinal Dolan asked me to celebrate the Mass as Vice-Postulaor of the Cause of Canonization of

Cardinal Cooke. Once a Cause of Canonization moves from the Diocesan phase to the Roman

phase, roles change somewhat.

During the Diocesan phase, when all of the documents to demonstrate a person’s holiness are

put together, there is a Diocesan Postulator. For Cardinal Cooke’s Cause, the Diocesan Postulator

was Fr. Benedict Groeschel. For years, while I was on the faculty of St. Joseph’s Seminary in

Yonkers, at the request of Cardinal O’Connor, I assisted Fr. Groeschel and the large staff of

volunteers who were working on the Cause. Eventually 22,000 documents were compiled and

readied to be sent to Rome.

Cardinal Egan presided at the closing of the Diocesan Phase and, at that time, he appointed

me Vice Postulator. Fr. Groeschel felt he could not continue in his role and he asked Cardinal Egan

to appoint me. At the same time, the Cardinal appointed me the Courier to present the documents to

the Congregation of the Causes of Saints at the Vatican in Rome. (Somebody had to make sure the

documents arrived in Rome!). A Roman Postulator was retained at that time as well.

Three years later, Cardinal Dolan and I placed the main materials into the hands of Pope

Benedict XVI. We were all on the cover of Catholic New York newspaper in April, 2010. Pope

Benedict said we need Cardinal Cooke’s example now, but since then, we here in New York have

not seen any signs that Cardinal Cooke’s Cause has significantly moved forward.

We hope and we pray that, after careful study of Cardinal Cooke’s life, he will one day be

recognized as a declared Saint. Please pray that the Lord’s Will be done in all things. In fact,

Cardinal Cook’s episcopal motto was ‘Thy Will be Done’.

Sincerely in Christ,
