Cantor’s Notes

Cantor’s Notes

The earth, like most living things, is primarily comprised of a transparent, odorless, virtually tasteless and colorless fluid we call water. Even though our bodies, the ground, and most of the world we experience seems solid to us, just beneath the surface, water is ever flowing, moving blood and nutrients and earth, enabling life to grow.

The complete dependence of life on water is powerfully conveyed through the Hebrew root ם -ש-ג (gimel-shin-mem), which can mean both rain and physicality. Lest we forget that we are made up of nearly three-quarters water, the Hebrew language reminds us that without geshem (rain), there is no gashmiut (physicality). Or in other words, without mayim (water), there is no chaim (life).

Given the centrality of water to our existence, the prominence of rain and water in the Torah and Jewish liturgy comes as no surprise. In the beginning, God created the world by “separating the waters below from the waters above.” Moses was saved by Pharaoh’s daughter, who drew him from the water. Upon seeing Rachel for the first time, Jacob rolled the stone from the mouth of the well and offered her flock water. Our path to freedom from slavery in Egypt went directly through water. The priests in the ancient temple sanctified themselves with water, and prayer, we are told in the Book of Lamentations, involves pouring out our hearts like water.

Tefillat Geshem, the prayer for rain that Ashkenazi Jews recite on Shemini Atzeret, recalls many of our people’s transformative encounters with water. Recited at the conclusion of the festival of Sukkot and at the traditional start of the rainy season in Israel, the prayer calls upon God to remember the righteousness of our ancestors and to grace us with the gift of flowing water. “For their sake, do not withhold water,” we recite. “For the sake of their righteousness, grant the gift of flowing water.”

5 Tishrei-Heshvan 5782

Through detailing the many and varied ways that water has played a central role in the defining moments of our ancestors, Tefillat Geshem encourages each of us to consider the defining moments that water plays in our own lives. The imagery of the poem describes birth and death, trials and triumphs, vulnerability and strength, scarcity and abundance, all of which seems to suggest that we too are part of this story, part of the cycle of water, the cycle of life.

Water is always in movement. Since the beginning of creation, it has continuously been flowing in an endless cycle with no beginning and no end, from evaporation to condensation to precipitation to infiltration and back to evaporation, and this cycle is a closed cycle. The rain falling outside the window right now is made of molecules that existed when Abraham and Sarah walked the earth.

It is the movement of water, the flow, that supports life. The soil beneath our feet may be rich and fertile, but without water a plant can’t take up the nutrients it needs to survive, and when plants take up water and nutrients from their roots, they must also release water from their leaves. Absorbing and releasing, receiving and giving, this is the miraculous cycle that has happened every second for millions of years.

We too are part of this flow. From Abraham and Sarah to all of us, the water flowing through us is part of an unbroken chain, a cycle of water that continues to move and nourish and support life. This is why we invoke the merits of our ancestors when we recite Tefillat Geshem and pray that this same water will continue to flow for us, for our children, for all of creation for blessing, for life and for abundance.

6 October 2021

Shalom,

I’ll let you in on a little secret. Planning for High Holidays starts months in advance. With the early dates of Rosh Hashanah this year, the Ritual Committee started discussing in May how our services would look this year. We had the template from last year, which gave us a good idea of what works and what doesn’t work for a hybrid in-person/online service. Many things changed over the course of summer, mostly regarding how COVID was affecting our city, and we were able to address them. I thank everyone who took part in High Holiday services for helping us deliver them in a safe manner. The safety of our fellow congregants is paramount and in-person services only work when those attending follow the rules we have put in place to try to keep everyone healthy. Thank you to those who partook online, I know it’s a different experience than being in the sanctuary, but your willingness to observe the High Holidays in a non-traditional manner helps us maintain our plans.

There are two gentlemen who should be thanked profusely for their hard work. Our Kol Bo, Cantor Jayne, has created a set of High Holiday services that are meaningful and fit the needs of our congregation. His d’vars, davening and Torah leining are wonderful as well. I will remember how he explained that the shofar’s blasts are a reminder of Sarah’s cries, and how the trope of the Torah readings represent Heaven and Earth. I’ve been humming the melodies all week. Yasher Koach Cantor.

Our interim CEO, David Inhaber, had the building ready, and all the people and processes in place so that everything ran smoothly. It takes months of planning, discussing and setting up to ensure we can concentrate on the services. Thank you David.

Elliott Steinberg, our Hazzan Sheni, lifted the congregation throughout the holidays. Thank you.

Darryl Gurevitch, our Ba’al Tekiah, brought us to attention with his mighty shofar blasts. Thank you.

Russ Janiger, Laura Olschewski and Tracy Smith enhanced the mood for Kol Nidre with their harmonies. Thank you.

Avi Meyers, Ralph Gurevitch, Lorie Abernethy and Jonah Potasznik brought the Haftorot to life through their leining. Thank you.

Our director of engagement, Jonah Potasznik and Rabbi Ilana Krygier led our family and youth services masterfully. Thank you.

The Feldman and Pawer families, along with Monica Samchek made our bimah beautiful with flowers. Thank you.

Teresa Sofocleous, Jennifer Girvitz, Yolanda Cea, Danica Cheyfetz, Bill Barkaie and Adi Charikar all worked incredibly hard leading up to and during the High Holidays, with smiles on their faces. Thank you.

Jeff Dworkin, Susan Inhaber, Bev Silverstone and Steve Rosendorff kept everything moving at the back of the sanctuary and for all the honours. Thank you.

Cheryl Shiell, Maxine Fischbein, Markham Silver, Irv Adler, Lou Bracey all helped to organize as part of the Ritual Committee. Thank you.

I’m sure I’m missing some people and I ask you to forgive me. This year’s services were successful because of the participation of the entire congregation. Let’s ride the momentum together and have an amazing 5782.

New Season New Year

New Members

It seems to me that now would be a great time to review how points are awarded each month. 10 points are given if a team is present on its

assigned day in the morning. Ideally, we would like to see at least three people from the team for each service. In reality, the points are awarded even if only one person attends. 6 points are given if a team is present in the afternoon on its assigned day. In case you are wondering, we give more points to the morning service as fewer people attend then. Achieving a minyan in the morning was more difficult when the point system was devised, especially pre-COVID. 4 points are awarded if a team attends both the morning and the afternoon service. Most generally do, however, there a few that are not able to do so. Even having one person attend each session earns the team valuable points. So captains, please try to encourage members to attend at least one of the monthly minyanim. Teams that complete the original intention of having at least three people at each service in any given month are given 2 points for the 3 + 3 bonus. From the beginning, Harvey Silverstone felt that it was important to nurture the future generation of our synagogue, so he created the Next Generation Bonus of 2 points for teams that have members aged 13-39. So, from this we get a base of 20 points and another 4 possible additional points.

But then we have our bonus days. Each member who attends on a bonus day, earns one point for their team per service. Large teams with active players have an advantage, but steady attendance from members of smaller teams can add up too.

Finally, from time to time, a bonus, bonus question is asked. This is just another way to earn an additional point for your team. It also increases engagement in a fun way.

So, if I seem to be taking attendance or really checking the crowd out, this is what I am busy doing. Keep those points coming. Your team is counting on you and so is the Beth Tzedec community. Thank you for everything that you are doing. It really does make a difference to so many!! Warmest wishes, Susan Inhaber, NML Commissioner

Isaac Barmazel October 23, 2021 17 Heshvan 5782

Isaac will be called to the Torah on Saturday, October 23, 2021. He will chant from Parsha Vayera and the associated Haftorah reading. Isaac has been studying diligently for many months and is eager to lead parts of the Shabbat service, chant his learned portions and deliver his D’var Torah. Isaac has been attending The Calgary Jewish Academy since Junior Kindergarten. He strongly identifies with his Jewish roots, traditions, and customs. Isaac is vocal about and proud of his community and his heritage and he has also developed lifelong friendships through The CJA. Isaac is a compassionate and caring young man who naturally gravitates toward helping others and looking after younger children. He has a witty sense of humour, a contagious laugh, and entertains those around him. He is developing into a courteous teenager while maintaining his fun-loving and carefree ways. Isaac’s interests include soccer, biking and skiing. Family ski trips are a cherished tradition and Isaac will soon eclipse his parents’ abilities on the slopes. Isaac has attended at least one bike camp every summer since the age of four and can ride in the mountains with adults. Isaac is committed to soccer and in nearly 10 years of playing both indoor and outdoor, he has seldom missed a practice, game, or technical session. Isaac has been fortunate to have the same core teammates since first joining soccer and they (and their parents) have formed an extended community and lifelong friendships. Mazel Tov to Isaac’s parents – Zakeana Reid and Filipp Barmazel. Proud grandparents are Khana and Izroel Barmazel (Calgary) and Penny and Bill Reid (Toronto).

Cecily Claire Mandleman October 30, 2021 24 Heshvan 5782

Cecily Claire Mandleman will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, October 30, 2021. Mazel Tov to Cecily and her parents Colin and Aviva and younger sister Cassidy. Cecily loves to dance and this will be her 10th year dancing at Airdrie Dance Academy. She dances jazz and contemporary but her favourite is tap. You’ll always find her tap dancing around the house! When not in the studio, she has a paint brush or pencil in her hand drawing her favourite anime characters. Cecily loves the theatre and has attended the Storybook Theatre’s Summer Spotlight camp for the past three summers. Cecily just started Grade 9 at Bert Church High School in Airdrie. She has enjoyed her three summers at Camp BB and hopes to attend again this coming summer. Before postponing her bat mitzvah last year, as a Mitzvah project Cecily made her own scrunchies and sold them to friends and family. She will be donating the proceeds to the Alberta Children’s Hospital. We are very proud of Cecily and after postponing for a year, we are very excited to celebrate in person with our friends and family.

Wynne Thal Pantry (Food Bank) Every drop in the bucket helps!

The need is great. Please do what you can by bringing any canned goods, cereal,

paper products or toiletries (the Miriam's well box will be located outside the doors from 8:00am to 3:00pm ). Items need not be kosher. Even just one item from everyone can make a difference. Let's encourage our young children to

participate in this great Mitzvah.
