PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEGreetings from the HCC Board of Directors! Last month the Board elected me to serve as President for the next year, and I am extremely humbled and excited to serve our Club. In addition, the Board also elected Will Buie as Vice President, Nathan Kennedy as Treasurer and Keith Maxwell as Secretary.

I would like to give a big thank you to Kiki Matthews for the wonderful

work she did as our past club President. Kiki, the HCC Board, Anthony Chelena and his staff have done so much to put our club in a wonderful position during unprecedented times. Our Club remains fiscally sound, our Membership base is growing, club usage is at a level we haven’t seen in many years, and vast improvements have been made throughout our facilities and grounds. I am excited to report that the board is discussing many more improvements that our Membership is sure to enjoy in the coming months.

The fall season is the time when standing committees finish their work for the year, and Board Members are (re)assigned to new committees. Thank you to each and every Member who has served on a standing committee over the past year. Our Board will begin building new committees in the coming weeks. If you are interested in joining one of these, please let a Board Member or Anthony know. We will be glad to have your input.

If you have been to the club lately, you likely have noticed many new faces. As Hendersonville and the surrounding area has grown, so has our Membership. We are grateful to the many new individuals and families that have joined us over the last 12 months, and we are glad to see that our active membership is enjoying all that HCC has to offer. It is also important to note that we are quickly approaching our A Member cap which is intended to preserve the club experience for our members. I personally want to thank our entire membership for the continued support and participation during these times. There has never been a better time to be a Member of Hendersonville Country Club.

MANAGER’S MESSAGEWhen we announced this summer that we were raising our initiation fee rates October 1, I knew it would encourage people to join our Club before the rates increased. I had no idea how many. This year has been a very good year for new memberships. The last 30 days have been astonishing. I’m hesitant to give you numbers because they change a couple times a day, but it’s safe to say that we received more than 35 membership applications in September. Thank you! What about our Golf Membership cap? We are getting close. I know we will be capped sometime in 2022.

So, again we say welcome to all our new Members and we say thank you to all the Members who proposed and sponsored them. We’ve added so many interesting and friendly new Members and our Club is better because of it.

GOLF CART RETURNPlease remember to return all golf carts back to our staging area beside the golf shop after your round, or after going to the range. There has been numerous times where carts have been left in the parking lots, the range, the 10th tee, and behind the Clubhouse. Please help us by returning your golf cart.

DRIVING RANGEAfter your range practice, please keep any unused golf balls in the bags and turn back in with the golf cart staff. If you finish hitting all the balls in the bag please hang the bag on the bag stand holders or bring them back to the golf staff. With our windy fall days any bags left on ground will blow away quickly. (Too bad all the leaves that fall will not blow away.) On the putting green, if you use any range balls to practice putting, please collect all balls when you are finished so the putting green is clean and available for the next group of golfers.

GOLF TOWELS AND RANGE BAGSPlease look and see if you have any golf towels and range bags. Over the last 3 months we have purchased over 300 towels and are now short in our supply. As a courtesy, we like to place two towels in each cart. All golf towels and range bags need to remain at the Club.

GREAT SHOTS • Jim Wert shot 3 strokes under his age when he fired an 81 August 6th. • Larry Hargis shot 78 to also bettered his age by 3 strokes on his round August 23rd. • John Van Blaricom had a hole-in-one on hole #2 on his round September 5th. His 8-iron shot found the cup from 153 yards.• Bob Gaston scored an eagle 2 using a 6-iron on hole #6 from 155 yards during play on September 14th.

ON THE GREENI feel that October is one of the best months to play golf. Chilly crisp mornings are followed by warm sunny afternoons. The golf course and fall foliage seem to get better each day. On the golf course, our focus is preparing the course for winter. Ensuring that our bermudagrass fairways and approaches enter dormancy healthy and strong is a major priority.

Bermudagrass is a perennial warm-season grass. It grows most actively from late spring through early fall before going dormant in the winter. We’re currently beginning to see dropping temperatures which trigger its transition into dormancy and its need to store carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are loaded into the plant by applying liquid fertilizers. The plant will hold them until the spring, assisting the turf out of dormancy. Our goal is to make three separate applications before our first significant frost. In addition to building up carbohydrate reserves in the plant, increasing the height of the cut is essential. Benefits of a higher height of cut includes; increased photosynthesis and carbohydrate production and insulating the plant’s crown and growth points, which help reduce cart and foot traffic damage. We grow robust, vigorous bermudagrass during the summer, and our goal is to put it to bed as healthy as possible.

Last month, our department and the Club lost our most tenured and respected employee Floyd Thompson. Floyd served the Club for 46 years, 20 of those years as an Assistant Superintendent. Floyd was a daily fixture and dedicated to his job. Not only did he show up everyday with a smile and positive attiitude, he desired to continually learn about golf course maintenance and grow in the profession. Floyd also played a significant role in supporting me when I arrived here 11 years ago. He was an invaluable resource and helped me make sense of the Club’s culture and the nuauances of the membership. He also taught me about humility, a characteristic he felt comfortable with. I owe a great deal to Floyd for my personal and professional growth and I am forever thankful for the opportunity to have known and worked with him.

Floyd touched the lives of everyone who knew him and will be missed as a coworker and a wonderful friend.

Many thanks to Larry Appleby, team captain, and Mike Beckerman, lead coordinator, for launching this initiative. To learn more about our interclub play, contact Mike at [email protected].

MAIN CLUBHOUSEWe wrapped up September with our final Steak, Bourbon and Cigar dinner of the year. The cold front paired well with the bourbon and we had a great time with the largest crowd we’ve had for one of these dinners to date. As we move indoors and out of the cold, Chef Steve and I are thrilled to host our first wine dinner together. This event sold out one hour after being advertised in the Score, so rest

assured, there are plans being made for another in the future.

Have you ever asked yourself “What wine should I serve for Thanksgiving?” I say Pinot Noir but Mr. Chelena says “Zinfandel of course.” Come make that decision for yourself and taste the wines that Janelle, from Mutual Distributing, has handpicked for your Thanksgiving Dinner. This complimentary tasting will be held in the Living Room of the Main Clubhouse on Friday, October 29th from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. You’ll have the opportunity to order wine directly from the distributor and charge it to your account. What a great opportunity to stock up for the holiday season!

OCTOBER WINE OF THE MONTH

THE PRISONER WINE COMPANY, SALDO ZINFANDEL, CALIFORNIA$9 Glass | $36 Bottle

This wine features outstanding fruit from premier Northern California vineyards in the Dry Creek, Lodi, and Amador regions, where zinfandel grapes have thrived for decades. Made with a mix of zinfandel, petite sirah, and syrah red grapes, this bottle opens with intriguing and bold aromas of black licorice, black pepper, cherry, and baking spice. Each mouthwatering sip of this dark red wine is rich, full, and scintillating, with a hint of chocolate, leading to a smooth, voluptuous finish with soft, velvety tannins. Barrel aging in a combination of old and new, French and American oak barrels brings out the full flavors of this delicious red wine, adding to its exquisitely smooth palate. A food-friendly wine, this Saldo zinfandel wine pairs well with grilled steaks, aged cheddar or provolone, pasta with red sauce, charcuterie, and a variety of spicy dishes.

CHEF’S CORNEROktoberfest is here and will end October 3rd if you are in Germany. However at Hendersonville Country Club we will be celebrating all month long. As many of you know, I am first generation American with German roots. My grandparents and my mother immigrated after the war to Ellis Island, then to Meridian Connecticut when my mom was 4 years old. I grew up here until the 3rd grade when my Opi

(Grandfather in German) stumbled upon a sleepy Asheville during a vacation and immediately fell in love...he said it reminded him of the Blackforest in Germany. Within a year we were living in North Asheville.

One thing Asheville didn’t have was a German butcher. Every Saturday morning my brother Tom, Opi, and myself would go to this German butcher in our home town called Noacks. It was just as religious for our family to do this on Saturdays as it was to attend our Lutheran Church on Sundays. The fondest memories I have about Noacks were the German Hotdogs and seeing my Opis face light up like he was back home. Tom and myself wouldn’t leaved the store until we consumed 2 chilled hotdogs straight from the case.

By now you all are wondering what Chef keeps rantingabout... so here goes. I am having these very same frankfurters for the month of October to be available at the Clubhouse on Wednesday Nights.

Since 1966 Noacks has been smoking meats according to recipes handed down generation to generation from the Lake Constance area in the Black Forest portion of Germany. This is our fifth decade of serving the New England area with the finest hams and other meat products produced in the German tradition of sausage making and smoking.

Noack’s is a USDA inspected producer of smoked and fresh meat products made using traditional German techniques. Noack’s operates both a wholesale distribution business and a retail counter from the same location. A wide assortment of meat products are available, including sausages and hams in smoked, fresh, and nitrite free forms. People from all around who are looking for the best in healthy, fresh, and delicious meats have come to trust Noack’s!

I am amazed to see Noack’s still in business and stronger then ever.
