But all theses HMs were close confidents of the then PMs. Morarji Desai was first PM who gave this portfolio to his trusted H M Patel on January 24, 1979. Patel was HM & Pers Minister for six months. Other Home Ministers, who were entrusted the Pers portfolio were- Y B Chavan for five months, Giani Jail Singh for 29 months, R Venkataraman for two months, P C Sethi for 22 months, P V Narsimha Rao for five months and L K Advani for 16 months. Advani was the only Dy PM who was holding MHA anf Pers ministry.

    Seven HMs were also Pers Ministers

    Venkatraman had the shortest period R. Venkatraman, who was Home Minister during Indira Gandhi's second term, was also Pers Minister for 2 months from June 22, 1982 to September 2 same year. According to official record this was the shortest period of any HM as Pers Minister.
