President’s Message EarlyindicationsarethatourFallSale&Showwasagreatsuccess!We’recompilinginformationandwillreportfullyduringourOctobermeeting.
Thankstoeveryonewhovolunteeredtocontributetothisevent’ssuccess.We’llapplaudthemallbynameduringourmeetingonbehalfofthevendorswhoturnedplantsintocash,thebuyerswhodemonstratedthattheyenjoyedtheexperienceandtheplantstheytookhome,andtheSociety’smembers,whobenefitfromfutureactivitiesfundedbytheSale&Show.
Wearenowenteringtheyear’sfallquarter,asthechangeinthisnewsletter’sseasonaltemplatereflects.As2018windsdown,welookaheadtotwomorevisitingspeakersandourever-popularChristmasparty.
Then,we’lllaunchinto2019.Wewillcontinuetoneedmemberstovolunteerforvariousshort-termtasksduringtheyear,andwealsowelcomememberswhowillassumerolesasboardmembersorcommitteechairpersons(p.8).Thoseslotsareablyfilledatpresent,buttheyarealwayssubjecttoturnover.Considerwhetheryoucouldbringyourtime,energyandtalenttoanyofthosepositions,andhowrewardingandenrichingthatcouldbeforyou.
WealsowelcomeyourideasforactivitiesthattheSocietycouldtakeon.Wehavetalkedaboutdaytrips,overnighttrips,visitstomembers’gardens,andotherpossibilities.Wewillworkwiththememberstofocusonhigh-interestactivitiesandmakethemhappen.
Lastly,here’sareminderthattheCentralCoastCSSneedsvolunteerstohelpoutwiththe2019CSSAConference,tobeheldinSanLuisObispo.Wehavelistedthevolunteeropportunitiesinthisnewsletter.Wewillcheckwiththeplannersforanupdatedlistandpostitonourwebsite:mbsucculent.org.

Membership:KarenValentineintroduceda“Friendpal”ideatosendOntheDrySidetofolkswhodonothaveemail.Sinceshewillnotbesendingouthardcopiesofthenewslettertofolkswhodonothavecomputers,sheinvitedBoardMemberstovolunteertogiveacopyofthemonthlynewslettertoanothermember.Thiswillsavetheclubthetimeandmoneyofprintingoutandmailinghardcopies.Shealsoshowedtheboardthenewwelcomebrochurethatwillbeavailableatthefallshow&sale.Allpresentwereveryhappywiththenewdesign.

MBACSSParticipationin2019CSSAConvention:Thediscussionindicatedthatweshouldrecruitvolunteersforthisevent,tobehostedbytheCentralCoastCSS.Alistofjobswillbedistributedagain,soMBACSSmemberscouldvolunteerforspecifictasks.
ProjectionScreenUpdate:TomKarwinmetwithVFWCommanderDanielMagdalenoandVFWQuartermasterDavidAmbriztomakefinalarrangementsforthepurchaseofan8-footprojectionscreen.TomKarwinwillpurchasethescreen,withthecosttobeshared50-50bytheMBACSSandtheVFW.TheVFWwillmountthescreeninthefrontoftheroomundertheflag,andinstalltheelectricalserviceandandtheremotecontrol.HopefullywewillhaveanoperablescreenbytheOctobermeeting.

FallShow&Sale:GaryStubblefieldreportedthatthetablesareordered,andfinalplanningisbeingdone.
FallShow&SalePublicity:SarahMartinreportedthattheonlylistshecouldfindwasourmembershiplistbuttheboarddecidedthatsincetheyalreadyknowaboutthesalebecauseofthenewslettertonotsendthosecardsout.TomKarwinwillgetanarticleabouttheshowintheSentinelandtheHerald.SomepeopleputnoticesonNextDoorwebsitesandtheirFacebookpages.IndividualmemberswilldistributeflyersandpostcardsdevelopedbySarahMartin.Theboarddiscussedotherwaysofmaintainingthelists,editingthedocument,andsharingtheinformation.
Springshow:TheSpringShowwillbeApril13&14,2019,againattheSanJuanBautistalocation.

SincethattimeIhaveboughtandalsogrownplantsfromseedandtubercles.Theseed-grownplantsandtubercle-grownplantswereA.retusus.InowgrowallknownAriocarpusfromseedandhavenotboughtanyforquiteafewyearsexceptformonstroseones.
IdonotexpecttotakeanysaleplantstosellasIhavealmostonlycactusandtheydonotsellveryhotlikeneartheocean.

Ariocarpusisasmallgenusofsucculent,subtropicalplantsofthefamilyCactaceae,endangeredandquiterareinthewild.
Ariocarpusspeciesareveryslowgrowing.Plantshavethicktuberoustaproots,andaresolitaryorformsmallclustersofstems.Thestemshavetubercules(asisnormalincacti),butunusuallythesearetriangularandinsomespeciesmayresembleleaves.Theareoles,whenpresent,varyinappearancefromgroovesontheuppersurfacetoroundpadsnearthetips.Spinesareonlypresentinseedlings(exceptoccasionallyinA.agavoides).Thefunnel-shapedflowersareborneonawoollystructureattheapex.Theyvaryincolorfromwhiteoryellowtopink,purpleormagenta.

Cactus Parodia (Notocactus)
Gymnocalcium
ParodiaisagenusoffloweringplantsinthecactusfamilyCactaceae,nativetotheuplandsofArgentina,Peru,Bolivia,Brazil,ColombiaandUruguay.Thisgenushasabout50species,manyofwhichhavebeentransferredfromEriocactus,NotocactusandWigginsia.Theyrangefromsmallgloboseplantsto3-foottallcolumnarcacti.Allaredeeplyribbedandspiny,withsingleflowersatornearthecrown.Somespeciesproduceoffsetsatthebase.Theyarepopularincultivation,butmustbegrownindoorswheretemperaturesfallbelow50°F.
Gymnocalycium,commonlycalledchincactus,isagenusofabout70SouthAmericanspeciesofcactus.ThegenusnameGymnocalycium(fromGreek,"nakedcalyx")referstotheflowerbudsbearingnohairorspines.
TheirmainareaofdistributionisArgentina,partofUruguay,Paraguay,southernBoliviaandpartofBrazil.Mostspeciesarerathersmallvaryingfrom4to15centimetersinsize.Incultivationtheyarepopularfortheireasyfloweringhabits,andtheflowersaregenerallybrightlycolored
