The month of September has seen lots of media about aged care and the
negative approach by some staff across the country. While this is
disturbing and the 4 Corners reports were very graphic with the treatment
some older Australians have received, it is a reminder to us all that they
are vulnerable and need everyone to advocate and care for them as they
have done in their younger days for us. To someone they have been a
mother, father, friend, community participant and most of all a human
being. Their contribution to society has played an important part and
they now need our help to continue being important within their role as an
older Australian.
The astonishment on the faces of staff at Nanyima told it’s own story of
empathy for the residents identified in the 4 Corners report. They have
a high level of care for the residents at Nanyima and would be extremely
disappointed should anyone treat ‘their’ residents like that. Thank you to
a wonderful team of staff who care at Nanyima.
We can now say the waiting is over for the arrival of our new bus and car
which have both been long overdue for replacement. Trust everyone is
getting used to the new vehicles and enjoying their outings.
Some weeks ago we commenced rostering two nurses in the morning and
two in the evening to provide special care to our wandering dementia
residents. This has proved to be very successful for all involved and the
carers have done some great work with a variety of activities to meet the
special needs of this group of residents. In the building that we have it
can be a challenge to keep up with them all as these residents seem
to be able to move very quickly around the building. Part of our future
planning would be to look into having a specialised dementia unit where a
full focus can be on these residents only.
Congratulations to the catering team on passing our latest
Food Safety Audit. This is an in depth review each year by
the Mackay Council of all aspects relating to our food
provisions.
Until next month keep well and safe

From Marion - DT
WOW!!!! $3,385 My jaw nearly dropped and hit the desk, when Sue rang
and told me that was the amount we made at our annual Cent Sale on
Friday the 7th. It was great that a number of other facilities made the
journey to join us for the morning Sarina Aged Care, Sarina Respite,
Homefield, Good Shepherd Lodge and Kerrisdale Gardens. Thanks to
Volunteers, staff, family, friends and some businesses for all the great
prizes we had to offer. A delicious morning tea was served before we
began all thanks to our hard working kitchen staff and Bidfood Mackay. We
had a very relaxed fun morning, a bit of good humoured banter was going
on between the facilities. A few family members came and spent the
morning, there were not a lot of community members here this year that is
why I thought we did not do as good as last year. But! We blew it out of
the water. We would like to thank Jen Goode for calling out the numbers
and all the volunteers and staff for their hard work on the day. At the end
of the morning the raffle was drawn 1st Jen Costello, 2nd Bill & Marg
Mclean and 3rd Gladys Jenkins. Three of the facilities stayed and had
lunch before heading back home. A HUGE THANK YOU TO EVERYONE
WHO SUPPORTED US.
On Friday the 14th we were invited to the Marian Ladies Bowls Club
Fashion Parade and Cent Sale. As always a yummy morning tea was waiting
for us when we arrived. The Fashion Parade was first with Noni-B supplying
the outfits, then we had a couple of quizzes, the raffles were drawn, all
before the Cent Sale started. We were fairly lucky with a few of us
winning prizes. Thanks to ladies for always inviting us every year.
On Monday 17th Nola Lloyd and Kay Baker joined us again, this time they
brought along Elvis [alas Phil Battams] and his wife Priscilla [alas Josie]. We
went from doing a jive and the twist, to beautiful soft ballads. Residents
and staff were amazed how much Phil sounded like Elvis, they were just
swooning . I can assure you there was no underwear throwing. Nola and Kay
also belted out a few tunes for us. Thanks for coming and making it such an
up beat day.
Every month we have a movie morning, this month the movie was
A Gift Horse. It was about two young girls and their horses, as
always there were tears and laughter. Our residents always enjoy
movies that have children or animals, Musicals go down well also.
![Page 5: October 2018 - nanyimacare.com.au](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022012420/6174ca180e201b4d17103bed/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
On Wednesday the 26th we had Neil Brooks join us, he is a local artist from
Finch Hatton. Neil is a wood carver and he uses a chain saw, yes! A chain
saw. It was entertainment out side the box, which our residents thoroughly
enjoyed especially the men.
Next month we are holding our annual Flower and Plant Carnival on the 11th
and 12th. There will be a cake and craft stall, Rob Rolls will be here on the
Friday to entertain us. The two days will be an explosion of colour and
fragrance. Morning tea will be available both days for a gold coin donation.
We hope to see you all here.
It is good to be back.

Managing Diabetes in Aged Care
Older diabetes sufferers are at risk of many problems, including malnutrition, but
best practice is to balance blood glucose levels and quality of life.
Diabetes is a growing health problem, characterised by the body’s reduced capacity or inability to control
blood glucose (sugar) levels.
Poorly-controlled diabetes can result in:
• Chronic infections
• Poor wound healing
• Weight loss
• Fatigue.
Diabetes can also lead to long-term health problems, such as:
• Heart disease
• Nerve damage
Vision impairment
Kidney failure
The increasing prevalence of diabetes has meant that residential aged care facilities are facing the growing
burden of caring for, and managing clients with diabetes. With the high risk of malnutrition in this population
group, managing residents with diabetes can be challenging for many nurses and aged care kitchens.
Best practice diabetes management in the elderly population has evolved immensely. There is now a better
understanding of the disease and its implications for the frail elderly. And there have been many
improvements in diabetes medications and insulin therapies.
This progression has led to a movement away from a restrictive ‘diabetic diet’ to a more relaxed approach.
The priority for diabetes management in aged care is to achieve a balance between controlling blood glucose
levels and promoting quality of life for residents.
For the dietary management of residents with diabetes, residential aged care facilities should consider the
following:
1. Menu planning
A separate diabetic menu is not required. If the standard menu is well balanced, there is no need to provide
alternative diabetic options. An even distribution of carbohydrate-containing foods at each meal and snack
ensures the regular menu can be applied for all residents. Input from an Accredited Practising Dietitian
(APD) will assist in this aspect of menu planning.
2. Artificial sweeteners
Diet products such as diet cordial, diet jams and artificial sweeteners are not necessary for residents with
diabetes. These products can be expensive, and when consumed regularly, may result in gastrointestinal
upset in some residents.
Residents who have been using these products at home may choose to continue to use these upon entering
the facility. Kitchens should be able to provide these at the resident’s request, however a review by an APD
to explain the decreased need for these to the resident or their family, may be useful.
3. Sugar
Sugar added to tea or coffee, or a thin spread of jam on toast can be included as part of a healthy diet for
residents with diabetes. A spoonful of sugar in a drink between meals is unlikely to impact greatly on blood
glucose levels. Likewise, regular desserts such as fruit crumble and custard, milk-based mousses and ice-
cream are acceptable to include as part of the menu for residents with
diabetes. Foods with large amounts of added sugar such as soft drinks and lollies
are of low nutritional value so should be kept to a
minimum. Take Care Karen
