The kitchen is the heart of a home, so they say. When guests arrive, they usually meander in to see what’s cooking, lend a hand, or taste the gravy. With such an obviously important place in the hierarchy of rooms, renovating your kitchen could be an anxiety-inducing

proposition.“The kitchen is really what people look to to set the tone of the

whole house,” said Jessica Markley, gallery manager of Cambria’s showroom at 400 S Broadway, Suite 105, Rochester.

If that’s not intimidating enough, the kitchen footprint in newer homes has grown tremendously, according to Renee Redalen, interior designer and owner of Tranquility Inspired Designs of Rochester.

“We know that the kitchen is the heartbeat of the home, it’s always been that way. It’s probably more so now. Very rarely in new construction do we incorporate a dining room, a formal dining room. Everything now is catered to the idea of the large open concept kitchen,” said Redalen.

Redalen, who just redid her own kitchen in a contemporary style, argues that your personality can shine through with the aid of well-selected cabinets, countertops, tables, appliances, and shelving.

Using the trends she incorporated into her own remodel as a guide, here are five top kitchen trends for those looking to remodel.

1. Grey“Grey now is considered kind of the

new white,” said Redalen.Lots of cabinets are being painted

in warm grey tones, while blacks and whites continue their rule over most used kitchen colors. The commercial appliance trend - metal fridges and ovens - is also a part of this. Grey has even started to resurrect trends thought long-dead, like brass.

“Brass is coming back with a bang,” said Redalen. “I never thought I’d say that as a designer, years ago, but it’s taking on a whole new look… Pairing that with a grey cabinet is an absolute beauty because you’re mixing the warm of the (brass) with that cooler tone of

the grey.”

2. Big ContrastLike the play between brass and grey,

people are gravitating toward more clear-cut, simple contrasts. “What we are finding right now is a real popularity in high contrast,” said Markley. “A lot of deep dark espresso cabinets paired with very, very light countertops to have a very striking balance between the two.”

Redalen, for example, painted her kitchen white, but her open shelves are done in a black stain, which lifts from the darkness of the floor. Markley says other people mix things up by painting their island or cabinet trims a different color than the rest of the body. She reports seeing an increase in demand for low gloss finishes, too, which fits right into the simple aesthetic provided by high contrast elements. Since light bounces off of high gloss, the low sheen brings a softer, more natural look.

4. QuartzThese days, quartz is king against

both marble and granite. It is, after all, the reason any granite is as strong as it is.

“People love quartz because it’s a carefree product. It’s natural stone but it is manmade so it is a non porous and non staining. (It is) easy to take care of, and does not remit any raydon,” said Redalen, who installed a Cambria quartz countertop made to mimic marble. She saw the trend rise in 2016 and says it’s still building.

3. Open Shelving“Not everything has to be behind a

closed door,” said Redalen.Expose your dinnerware. Glass doors

are the wave of the 1800s; its time to stack dishes in the open and leave your stemware a simple reach and grab away from use. Open shelving doesn’t have to stop at tableware, either. It’s nice when you’re serving to have the glassware readily available, says Redalen. Plus, it’s a chance to show off more of your style: mixing other design elements, like succulents, candles, or a vintage cookbook collection, is a totally acceptable move these days.

5. IslandsOpen concepts give more flexibility to kitchen inhabitants, from guests to entertainers. When Redalen went to remodel her own kitchen, she made sure to include plans for more seating. Her house was built in 1995, and included an island for food prep, but back then, dining rooms were still assumed to be the place where food got consumed. Redalen’s remodel included a large island with seating for four and more seats at a counter.

Rendalen’s remodeled kitchen features open shelving, contrast,

a large island, and quartz countertops.

Your first step should be to complete a deep cleaning of your entire home. A simple dust, sweep, and vacuum won’t do the trick in this case, since dust, dirt, and pet hair tend of find their way into hard to reach areas. Keep in mind that covering up odors isn’t going to do the trick. If a deep clean doesn’t take care of pet odors, consider getting the ductwork professionally cleaned. If you’re still having trouble eliminating the smell of your fur-babies, it might be time to replace carpet and padding if they’ve been repeatedly soiled over the years. If you’re up for it this can be a DIY job, but hiring a professional company is a great way to allocate your time and efforts on other things to prepare your home for resale.

Now that your home is clear of dirt, odor, slobber, and hair, it’s time to remove all other evidence of pets. Our pets are a part of the family and likely have more items scattered around the home than you think. Gather beds, toys, blankets, collars, food, and other items and store them away. It will be nearly impossible to keep all of your pets items in storage, so at the very least keep them in a decorative bin and make it easily accessible to use when you’re home and put away when you’re gone.

Deep Clean Remove the Evidence

Staging your home for sale is one thing, but staging it when you have pets is another beast entirely. But it can be done! It’s important to recognize why pet staging in particular is vital to you as a seller. The perceived value of a home will hinge on the overall condition of the house. If you’ve got scratched flooring, stinky rooms, or a minefield of doo-doo to navigate, this will certainly bring a lesser offer. Letting your pets be an excuse to deny or delay showings is a big no-no. Buyers will not stop their search for a new home when you deny their showing request. Making a plan of action for your pet prior to selling will ensure you don’t miss the perfect buyer for your home. Here’s how you can actually prepare your home for sale while providing a loving and comfortable home for your pets.

How to sell your home when you have pets

You’ve spent some serious time and effort cleaning up the inside of the home to make the resale process easier, but you mustn’t forget to give your exterior some attention as well. Buyers will most definitely walk through your yard during showings. If there’s doo-doo to dodge, it’s going to leave a bad impression. Make sure fences and dog runs are clean and you’ve filled any holes in the yard if you’ve got diggers.

As perfect as our pets may be, sometimes they cause some damage to the interior of our homes. Before you list your home for sale it’s important to correct said damage before any buyers see it. If carpet or hardwoods have been damaged or extremely worn, consider replacing or refinishing.

Other common damaged areas include trim work, ripped screens, and furniture. Leaving items in disrepair would be a huge mistake and would certainly decrease the perceived value of your home in the eyes of the buyers.

You know you have pets. You know you are selling your home. The time to make a plan for showings is before listing. In a perfect world, your pets would vacate the home for showings. You may need to arrange for a boarding facility or family member to watch them during the day once you list your home. Denying showing due to pets could cost you the perfect buyer so do yourself a huge, and very profitable, favor and arrange for your pets to be elsewhere so you can freely approve all showing requests that come in.

If you must leave your pets home during showings, it’s best to crate them to keep everyone safe. It’s common for sellers to trust their pets, especially cats, to steer clear of visitors during showings but trust me, it’s a complete distraction and unnecessary risk to take. Simply locking them in a room isn’t going to cut it. Buyers want to see all of the home and having an entire room inaccessible isn’t acceptable.

Exterior Clean Up

Repair Damage Don’t Deny Showings

Following the steps provided, you’ll have a beautifully staged home that’s attractive to potential buyers while keeping your pets happy, healthy, and safe during the selling process.

This collection of doors offers the durability and weather resistant properties of aluminum while giving off the sophisticated appearance of wood. Essentially maintenance-free, the Aries Collection features commercial grade extruded aluminum stiles and rails to create a high strength door frame.

The bottom weather seal keeps out rain, wind, debris and other elements from entering your garage. Your neighbors will be so surprised to find out the door they thought was wood is actually made from aluminum and is very weather-resistant.

The series has many style options to create a carriage-house feel to the door. Additional custom arches can also be added to match your existing door opening.

Fake Floral Faux Pas

It’s hard to improve upon nature. But when it comes to floral and foliage décor inside your home, you actually can fool friends and neighbors into believing that hanging Boston fern, potted ficus tree, or hydrangea and lilac arrangement atop the credenza are bona fide bloomers – if you pick the right faux flora, that is.From replica rose bouquets to imitation topiaries, a wider variety of realistic-looking synthetic plants and flowers are available today than ever before, employing materials like silk, polyester, nylon, and soap to create incredibly lifelike, highly detailed, and authentically colored facsimiles worthy of being proudly displayed in even the fanciest of homes.

The good news is that our fascination with faux has not faded. But make no mistake: fake is fake, and artificial flowers have to be used in the right locations and the right amounts.“I think homeowners continue to want to cut

down on maintenance in their homes and look for easier and simpler solutions. Fake florals fit within this trend and, when treated in the right way, can be a great solution,” says Mark Cutler, owner of Mark Cutler Design, Inc. in Los Angeles.Anna Kat Napier, owner of Victoria Lee Home in Chattanooga, Tenn., says artificial flora can be ideal for many areas inside the home, “including as fillers in a bookcase, as an accent on a night stand or chest or on top of an armoire.”

Cutler’s rule of thumb is that fakes are fine in rooms where real plants wouldn’t thrive due to lack of light. “Bathrooms are good spots, or even a basement room where a plant can add the right degree of warmth and personality,” he says.

“They’re also recommended in vacation or second homes, where it’s almost impossible to have real greenery because of the attention they entail,” says Michael Mitchell, co-founder/interior designer with Mitchell Hill in Charleston, South Carolina, who suggests using silk orchids in a bowl in the dining room and potted faux ferns on stands in the living room.

“It’s extremely important to

consider the quality of the faux

floral or greenery. If it looks fake

or plastic to you in the store, it

will look that way in your home.”

“Pick fakes that are made as close to the natural colors and

looks of the plant it is mimicking. For example, magnolias are not

burgundy in real life, so don’t opt for burgundy magnolias.”

ANNA KAT NAPIER, OWNER VICTORIA LEE HOME

MICHAEL MITCHELL, CO-FOUNDER/INTERIOR DESIGNER WITH MITCHELL HILL

Mina Fies, a designer and creator of the Renovation Roadmap in Reston, Virginia, says quality-made fakes can work just as well as the real thing if you have the right intention.

“Plants are symbols of growth, so they are great to place in an office or inside near the entrance to your home,” Fies says.

However, too many homeowners make bad decisions when it comes to faux plants and flowers.

“We don’t use or recommend them outdoors, where the sun will fade the leaves and petals, the elements will decay the materials, and they will stand out more as looking fake,” Mitchell says.

Many consumers cheap out and select fakes made with lower-caliber materials as well – another no-no.

“It’s extremely important to consider the quality of the faux floral or greenery. If it

looks fake or plastic to you in the store, it will look that way in your home. Choose good quality colors that coordinate with your décor,” says Napier, who prefers artificial floral arrangements with white, cream or yellow blooms and faux succulents – each of which harmonize with nearly every interior design.

Inauthentic colors can stand out like a sore thumb, too.

“Pick fakes that are made as close to the natural colors and looks of the plant it is mimicking,” Mitchell says. “For example, magnolias are not burgundy in real life, so don’t opt for burgundy magnolias.”

Neglected fakes also draw negative attention.

“These are dust magnets that have to be dusted regularly,” says Napier, who uses compressed air to clean petals, leaves, and stems. “Also, avoid letting direct sunlight hit

your faux arrangements, as it will cause them to fade. Once they start to look dingy, faded, or outdated, it’s time to toss them.”

Additionally, aim to use fakes modestly and in moderation.“Faux flowers are often best used as an accent or a fillip among real flowers, otherwise the display can look tacky,” says Stephanie Cavanaugh, a weekly gardening columnist in the Washington, D.C. area. “The window boxes I create mix 90 percent real with 10 percent faux. As the summer heat diminishes the real flowers, I stick fake ones in amid the foliage until the real ones begin to bloom again.”

Napier agrees that the key to proper synthetic flora design is balance.“Keep your faux arrangements small and

to a minimum. And if you choose to use faux florals or greenery, balance them with some live arrangements,” she says.

There are some house projects I can’t wait to tackle, and others that stay on the to-do list indefinitely. The downstairs bathroom in our house was one room stuck on my to-do list forever. Though it wasn’t my style, it was

functional, and since it’s not used on a daily basis, updating it was never a high priority. One recent weekend, in search of a quick and easy

house project, I decided it was time to tackle the bathroom and just get it done.Though it could have benefitted from new paint, it wasn’t within my timeframe to paint that weekend. Instead, I made three simple, and very cost-efficient, updates to give the bathroom the refresh it needed to get through until I move it to the actual to-do list.

UPDATE 1: New mirror. $15The old mirror was a trifold cabinet mirror. It was large and bulky in the small space, not to mention the cabinet was empty, a total waste of space. I took it down and replaced it with a simple framed mirror that matched the color scheme of the updated room.UPDATE 2: New artwork. Free. The bird art I had hanging above the toilet was really just a placeholder. I had nowhere else in the house to put it, and there was space above the toilet that needed something. So I hung it up when we moved in and never took it down. I replaced it with a photo I had printed on metal of an aloe plant I took while on vacation in Arizona earlier this year. Since I already had the image hanging elsewhere in my home, this update technically didn’t cost me a penny!

UPDATE 3: Added small shelf. $25With the removal of the cabinet mirror, I thought the room could use a small bit of space for practical items like cotton swabs and toothbrushes for overnight guests. I found this small shelf at a craft store and filled it with pieces I already had in my house, like some candles and pottery I had made.

Many homeowners like to play it safe by sticking to

tried-and-true hues in the paint spectrum, opting

for low-risk neutrals like tones of gray, tan or

off-white.

But experts say it’s freeing to think outside the

Crayola basics box and apply some character to a

room or area by choosing an out-of-the-ordinary

and perhaps underappreciated wall color that is

neither bland nor brash – one that will harmonize

with other interiors yet leave a lasting impression.

“It’s worthwhile to consider painting a room

an unconventional color because your walls can

act as a statement piece in your home,” says Dan

Schaeffer, owner of Five Star Painting in Austin,

Texas. “If done correctly, this color can make you

and your guests stop to appreciate what the color

does for the overall design and feel of the room. And colorful walls also reflect the personality of the homeowner.”

Sara McLean, color expert at Los Angeles-

headquartered Dunn-Edwards Paints, agrees.

“Painting with an unconventional color elevates

the room to its full potential, creating a welcoming

and inspiring atmosphere,” she says.

Rooms ripe for color experimentation include

bedrooms, powder rooms, and hideaway spots like a home office, library or sitting room, say the experts.“Areas that aren’t high-traffic gathering places for family and friends typically lend themselves

to a bit more creativity. I notice people tend to be

more daring in rooms such as the hallway to the

bathroom, kids playrooms, and even the laundry

room,” Schaeffer says.

To ensure more congruent transitions between

your curiously colored room and adjacent spaces,

don’t overdo it. “For a more seamless, calm effect

that’s not too overwhelming, I suggest picking

only one to two rooms to paint in unconventional

colors,” McLean says.

Lastly, remember that it’s best to avoid curious

colors when you’re trying to sell your home.

“Potential buyers want the home to be as much of a

blank canvas as possible so they can envision their personal style in the home,” Schaeffer adds.

7curious colors to consider the next

time you paint

1. Shadow (Benjamin Moore 2117-30). “While dark, this is a great middle point between favorite gray and a more ambitious purple,” says Ray Wheeler, owner of The Paint Manager, a painting service in Clermont, Fla. “Use this in hallways and foyers for a calming effect.”

2. Honey Glow (Dunn-Edwards DE5354). “Whether you have traditional or modern design elements, this is a beautiful warm, golden yellow that creates a warmth and vibrancy to the room,” McLean says.

3. Salamander (Benjamin Moore 2050-10). This dark blue-green is ideal for an accent wall in the living room that’s complemented with grey and white accents and pine wood floors, Schaeffer says.

4. That’s My Lime (Behr T17-16). One of 20 new limited edition trend colors in Behr’s 2017 palette, this shade of greenish beige adds instant interest to nearly any living space.

5. Cloudberry (Olympic OL677.3). Purple paint doesn’t have to be off-putting, especially if it’s a soothing lavender shade like this, just right for a bedroom.

6. Tropical Teal (Dunn-Edwards DE5754). “Teals are trending again, highlighting references from the sixties and nineties and providing vibrancy and life to a room,” McLean says.

7. Rosy Outlook (Sherwin Williams SW 6316). “This is perfect for a little girl’s playroom or bathroom,” notes Schaeffer. “It’s a light dusty color that provides a great way to mix in an unconventional color without being too over-the-top.”

Ponder these seven curious paint colors to make a safe yet striking statement:

Dark interiors inject a bold confidence into any space. A foyer with a dark wall color adds a unique, almost mysterious ambiance. It’s eye-catching in ways that a neutral color like white or cream could never be. Here are a few tips for going over to the dark side.

1. Choose the room.It would probably be too much of a good thing to paint every room a dark shade, so choose wisely. “Consider a room’s natural lighting and ceiling height,” says Nicole S. O’Dwyer, who owns interior design firm NS Designs. “If the foyer or kitchen has a high ceiling and large windows, for example, a darker wall or kitchen cabinet color will create

a focal point in a space that is already light and bright.”2. Think beyond the walls.“If you love a dark color but don’t want to make the commitment of painting an entire house or exterior, try using it as an accent,” O’Dwyer says. Staining wood trim a dark finish is a sophisticated way to enhance any space, and a dark entry door creates character.3. Choose the right color. For a dark shade to work best, don’t just pick a hue you like – think compatibility. “Interiors with dark colors are best executed when combined with a pattern,” O’Dwyer says. “For instance, if you are planning on using a dark color in a space, try pulling out

the darkest shade in a mosaic backsplash tile and using it as the cabinet color, or choosing a dark hue from the window treatment fabric for the wall color.” For a balanced look, use the neutrals in the pattern as inspiration for wood flooring and carpet. Some of O’Dwyer’s favorites: Sherwin Williams’ Rockwood Dark Brown (earthy brown) and Benjamin Moore’s Galapagos Turquoise (indigo), and Wrought Iron (slate).4. Paint it black.Black paint can be versatile in small doses throughout a home and when mixed with other accents, O’Dwyer says. One example: “Benjamin Moore’s 2017 Color of the Year, Shadow, can be an elegant master bathroom color scheme when you combine it with brass

plumbing fixtures, white tile and cream cabinetry.”5. Don’t create a cave-like ambiance. With the right accessories and ample lighting, you can create balance and avoid a dark interior from looking like it’s a home for bats. To balance a room painted dark, choose a white or cream trim, a mirror with a pale frame to reflect light and add contrast, and light fixtures that coordinate with the room’s finishes.6. Avoid downsizing. To prevent dark walls from making a room appear smaller than it is, consider an open concept space where there are plenty of windows and doors. If it’s got a high ceiling, that’s a plus.

Cassie McKinley, color consultant at Struve’s Paint and Decorating at 501 N Broadway in Rochester, says she’s seen people coming in wanting bold, dark colors. Pulling out the color trends from 2016 and comparing them to 2017, there is a huge shift in tone. Whereas 2016 featured lots of bright, popping colors, 2017 seems more sophisticated and refined, focusing on darker hues.

This national trend toward darker is being felt right here in Rochester. McKinley agrees that Benjamin Moore’s Shadow is one of the most popular hues people are asking for at the moment, though people here use it mostly as an accent, not for an entire room.

Local color trends agree

“If you love a dark color but don’t want to make the commitment of painting an entire house or exterior,

try using it as an accent.”

1. Audition the color in a big role

“Never, ever, ever just go by the swatch card. It won’t do the color justice or reflect how it will look in your pad,” says Ahern, author of the book “Color: Transform Your Home.” Paint an entire wall “and live with it for a few days to see how it makes you feel and how it looks in every light,” Ahern advises.

2. Test to see if the color belongs

Before doing an entire wall, paint a repositionable sample board. That way, you can move the board around to see how a color looks in different lighting and up against trim, furniture, and draperies.

3. Work up your nerve in a small space

“Making a bold color choice is intimidating. If you’re not ready to do it in a main room, start small – someplace like a powder room that’s not a big

commitment,” recommends Jackie Jordan, owner/designer, Jackie Jordan Studio, Allen, Texas.

The dining room is another place to experiment because you won’t live with the results every day, “and since it’s used for entertaining, it’s a place to add drama and energy,” she says.

4. Give your bold color star billing

“When you have a bold hue taking up a lot of real estate (such as a bedspread or sofa), restrain the rest of the palette, as it will make your key piece look way more amazing,” Ahern says. Bold colors are typically used as accents, but they can succeed as the predominant color in a room as well. Balance and contrast are keys. If the walls are dark or saturated, go for neutral, subdued upholstery.

5. Heed the 60-30-10 ruleChoose a main, secondary,

and accent color, and apply them formulaically. For

example, the main color on all four walls could be oxblood, with camel furnishings and olive accents.

6. Use color selection tools to get started

Some paint manufacturers’ websites and various apps allow you to experiment with different color palettes by “painting” preselected rooms or uploaded images of your own home. “Online tools are great to start the process and to answer the basic question of, ‘Do I really want red on my walls?’ But I would never make a color choice based on a virtual image,” Jordan says.

7. Let the color wheel be your guide

If you’re timid, choose an analogous color combination – colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. If you’re more adventuresome, choose complementary colors on opposite sides of the color wheel.

RULES FOR NOT PLAYING IT SAFE WHEN IT COMES TO COLOR.

BOLD Painting

Tips

Designer Abigail Ahern calls it “color paralysis” – the fear of making a regrettable choice when redoing a room in a bolder palette. Bored sick of beige, many homeowners yearn to surround themselves with more dramatic colors yet, somehow, still play it safe. With these tips from color experts, it’s possible to go bold without regret.

Locally, we’re seeing bold

colors pop up not inside

homes so much as on doors.

After all, hesitation to

making a big, bold change

is understandable. It can be

scary to commit to a drastic

change for an interior room,

especially one that is used

frequently. One way to stay

trendy is to add color to your

front door.

Cassie McKinley, color

consultant at Struve’s Paint

and Decorating, says locals

are following national trends

by putting bold colors on

their doors. Popular options

include Apple Green and

Country Redwood. Since

our exterior house colors

are trending to the blue and

grey hues, adding a pop of

color on a door is a great way

to be trendy without risking

too much. After all, it’s much

easier to repaint a door than

your entire home.

Downsizing typically means reducing the costs of home ownership, which will no doubt be a very difficult task. In order to reduce costs, you’ll most likely have to reduce the size of your home and/or property. You’ll likely have to reduce the amount of personal property you keep and make some sacrifices in terms of location and/or amenities depending on your desired location. Information is your ally when determining when the right time is for you to downsize.

My biggest piece of advice is to move before you are unable to. The next steps are as follows. 1. Have a licensed Realtor perform an in-depth comparative market analysis on your home. An appraisal will not cut it here, as market value and appraised value can be two very different numbers.

2. Ask your Realtor how much you’ll net from the sale of your current home. The sale price is one thing, but the amount you have to put towards the new home is what you really care about. That number is after title, real estate, and other fees are taken off of the final sale price.3. Now you know what to expect when you sell your existing home, you can get some advice from a lender as to how much you’d like to spend on the new purchase and set your budget. 4. With a budget in place and a pre-approval in your hand, you’re now ready to start the home search. 5. When searching for homes, remember why you’re downsizing and keep an open mind. You’ll have to make some adjustments regardless, but remembering why it’s best for your family to do so will help keep a healthy perspective.

If cost of ownership and square footage aren’t a sticking point for you in your current situation but your two story floor plan isn’t speaking to your joints anymore, you’re in the resizing category.

Renovating your current home is an option that may be the best solution for you, but most families find this to be costly and creates problems for resale down the line.

While buying an existing home is an option, building a new home should be considered as well. New construction is a common option for resizers because it solves most of the problems at the forefront. Here are a few reasons why. 1. You can build your new home around your budget. Starting the building process

involves designing a home that fits your family’s needs and then making sure that plan fits within your budget. A transparent process allows you to get exactly what you want within your specific budget. 2. The new resized home will fit your family’s exact needs. Because you’re customizing the home from scratch, you’ll ensure the investment is truly the right fit. 3. The new home will require significantly less maintenance than a remodeled existing home. There will be less repairs to make, plus you’ll have some kind of builder’s warranty, though you want to check your terms 4. You can always build a new home within a community that offers association amenities like lawn care and snow removal.

Downsizing Resizing

by JENNA MARTINDALE | EDINA REALTY | LICENSED REALTOR IN MN

The desire to downsize is something I hear a lot about in the real estate field. But what people mean by downsizing can be widely varied. What comes to mind when you hear “downsize” is usually less square footage, but what most people really mean is that they’re looking to reduce their monthly housing expenses. This can mean reducing the

square footage, having lesser amenities or reducing the acreage where you live. If, however, the problem isn’t cost or space but your current home no longer serves you, it may be time for a “resize.” Here are some things to consider before deciding which is right for you.

Downsizing versus Resizing: which is right for you?

benefits of

automated window

technology

Smart technology is making its way into homes in new and exciting ways. There are smart thermostats, smart appliances, and smart alarm systems. Now, smart technology is coming for your window treatments. Integrate the ease of automated technology with

your fashionable window coverings, no matter the style or fabric. Here are four major benefits you can expect with home automation.

As a parent, your number one concern is your child’s safety. It is important to not overlook basic household items such as window coverings when child-proofing your home. Smart home technology can be a major benefit for parents. Having automated shades can eliminate dangerous dangling cords out of a child’s reach keeping them safe around all windows.

You can save money on your energy bill with home automation. It’s estimated that we lose over 50 percent of our home’s heating and cooling through the windows. So rather than cranking up your heat or air conditioning to avoid uncomfortable temperatures in your home, consider automated shades. They can be controlled with the touch of a button or with your favorite smart phone or tablet.

Simply put, smart home technology is life changing. From security and light control to child safety,

the benefits are endless.

Your household may be chaotic, but smart devices are here to make life more orderly. Having these systems in your home make it easy for you to enjoy automated lights, shades, even music at the touch of a button or with a simple command. This technology was invented to make life easier for you.

With home automation you can control almost everything in your home, from securing your alarm system to controlling your window coverings. Smart home technology can provide a certain level of comfort – after all, your home is the place you should feel the safest. With the help of smart home systems, you’re able to turn lighting on or off and open or close your window coverings at all times to make it seem like someone is home even when you’re not. It is a way for technology to provide peace of mind when it comes to your family and their safety.

While it’s very valid to be concerned about the safety of candy in your child’s trick-or-treat bag, parents aren’t the only ones who should be worried about Halloween safety. Here are a few décor-related safety items to check off

your list before the ghouls and goblins come around. – Try flameless battery-operated lights in your pumpkins, but also for your interior décor. Glow sticks are another option for lighting up your jack-o’-lantern. If you do use real candles, keep away from flammable décor, or areas where trick-or-treater’s costumes could catch the flame. For indoor candles, keep away from curtains or other decorations. Never leave burning candles unattended.

– If using twinkle lights, check to make sure there are no frayed or exposed wires, and make sure all bulbs are whole.– While those inflatable and moving decorations are great, make sure you don’t overload your extension cord. Also make sure the cord is secured so no one trips over it.

– Make sure any large decorations are properly secured so they don’t fall on top of children and/or pets. That goes for items inside and outside the home.

– If decorating with hay bales or corn stalks, make sure to keep them away from open flames, like candles, or other heat sources, like lights or heaters.

– When carving pumpkins, create a stable base and use appropriate tools and sharp enough knives to properly cut through the rind.

– Make a well-lit path from the road or sidewalk to your front door if you’re expecting trick-or-treaters. Though strobe lights may be spooky, don’t risk a fall by leaving the path to your doorway poorly lit.

Halloween is ripe for fun decorations. Just be sure you’re being safe when planning how best to scare those neighbor kids!

from easy art to a sweet treat

Spooky, silly, or symbolic, carved pumpkins are an essential ingredient to any Halloween celebration. Sometimes though, it’s fun to break with tradition. This year, scare up some special fun for your party with a wicked watermelon carving, instead, and lots

of watermelon treats.Carving a creative design into a watermelon is a simple way to

kick off the festivities and requires only a handful of common tools. Add a twinkling candle to make a fantastically frightful centerpiece. Or fill it with a fresh fruit salad or salsas for a more functional, practical approach.

Even if you’re planning on a hollowed-out carving, keep the sweet juicy fruit and make it a healthy addition to your Halloween party menu with a recipe that puts to use all your carving leftovers.

• Prior to carving, read through all of the directions.

• Cuts are easiest when the watermelon is at room temperature. Once your handiwork is complete, chill the carving and contents before serving.

• After drawing your design on the rind, insert toothpicks in key places to guide your cuts.

• A sharp knife with a pointed tip makes the easiest, cleanest cuts. • Remove excess flesh in large pieces, when possible, to allow for easier melon ball or cube creation.

• Use round toothpicks or skewers to attach pieces to your design; flat toothpicks are not strong enough to bear the weight or stand up to the thickness of the rind.

With a thick rind covering the fruit inside, you may wonder how to choose the best watermelon at the market. Here are some tips for picking the perfect one:

• Look it over. Look for a round, oval, or oblong shaped watermelon that is free from bruises, cuts or dents.

• Lift it up. The watermelon should be heavy for its size. On average, a 5-pound watermelon yields 15 cups of edible fruit.

• Turn it over. The underside of the watermelon should have a creamy yellow spot from where it sat on the ground and ripened in the sun.

Wash watermelon under cool running water and pat dry.On cutting board, place watermelon on its side and use

kitchen knife to cut off 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch from bottom (end opposite stem), being careful not to cut too deep into white part of rind.

Cut 1/2-inch to 3/4-inch from stem end to create opening large enough to fit small bowl.

Using dry erase marker, draw eyes, nose and mouth, along with wavy slits around carving to let more light flow through. Use paring knife to cut out design, being sure to cut through to red fruit.

Use fluted or regular melon baller to hollow out inside of watermelon. Use scoop to remove excess watermelon.

Peel green rind off outside of watermelon. (Tip: Different peelers work well for different parts of the watermelon, depending on how flat or round the melon is.)

Wrap thin strips of cheesecloth around mummy carving and secure with straight pin, if needed.

Put battery-operated candle or light into carving. Fit small bowl into top of carving and trim away excess rind to make bowl fit securely. Fill bowl with melon balls and attach candy or blueberries to make eyes.

Pillow Talk

For about one-third of your head’s total existence, it will rest upon a pillow. You are not the first, nor are you the last. The first was someone some 9,000 years ago living in Mesopotamia,

where historians believe pillows originated. Recurring back, shoulder, and neck pain, as well as bugs creeping into sleepy mouths, necessitated that humans invent something to make sleep better. The Mesopotamians made them from stone, but in the millennia since, pillows have softened up, and the Industrial Revolution’s overhaul of the textiles industry made them available to Americans up and down the status scale. Today it’s taken as common sense that a pillow is a crucial element in one’s sleep system. But with so many options, where does one begin the hunt?Let’s get this out of the way first: it’s better to have one pillow for sleeping.

“Unless you sleep like the dead, it’s almost impossible to put two pillows there and have them maintain any sort of uniform shape over the course of a night,” said Rodney Moen, 12-year veteran of the sleep industry, who runs the mattress department at America’s Mattress, 5150 Hwy 52 North, Rochester. To find that perfect pillow, go in person to do a simple fitting.“It is almost impossible to pick a pillow online or to pick a pillow just right off the rack and, you know, squish it against your ear while you’re standing up. It’s almost impossible to tell if you’re ever going to like it,” said Moen. He says coming in for a pillow fitting is a mellow experience that should take all of five to 10 minutes.

“All you have to do is go lay down on a super comfortable mattress and try a super comfortable pillow and see what you think,” said Moen.Pillow fitting centers on the depth and firmness of the pillow. How broad your shoulders are, and whether your sleep on your back or your side should be taken into consideration.

For example, if you’re on a firmer bed, you’ll need a thinner pillow, otherwise it jams your neck up. Side sleepers tend to do better on a plusher, thicker pillow. Mattress store employees should be well-versed in these measurements.

The next consideration you’ll need to make is what kind of material you’d like your pillow made from. Traditional down feathers are long lasting and extremely comfortable, but pricey. They also require re-stuffing from time to time. Memory foam and latex retain a similar feel over years and have gotten better at regulating temperature. There’s also a new frontier in pillowland: scent. The current top selling pillow at America’s Mattress is made of ventilated memory foam treated with lavender essential oils.

“My wife and I both use the lavender pillows. I use a medium loft one, which is not quite as thick, and she uses a higher loft one just because of how she sleeps,” said Moen.Temperature might be more of a concern than scent, though. Maintaining the right temperature during sleep helps provide a deeper slumber. Dan Murphy, buyer for HOM Furniture, and Moen both report success with pillows imbued with some kind of cooling abilities, usually through ventilation.Though there are some quality checks you can make to determine whether the pillow you’re squeezing has earned its price tag (a queen pillow in the $79 to $99 price range should feature some ventilation for airflow, for example) there aren’t many visual tells. Manufacturers can easily take a cheap pillow and price it up, so don’t assume that price point is a guarantee of quality. America’s Mattress carries memory foam pillows starting as low as $29. They are filled with scraps of memory foam from other projects, bringing the price

down without much dip in quality. Gel pillows and memory foam cooling pillows start at $49.Still, there’s no substitute for your body’s own knowledge of itself.“I would be the first to tell somebody that if they sleep really good on a $6 Walmart pillow, sleep on a $6 Walmart pillow, just replace them every five or six weeks. Spend $75 a year that way,” said Moen.

“You’re looking for a pillow not for a number of months, but for a number of years,” said Murphy. “Like a good pair of shoes that you can buy and then depend on for a long period of time.”

CHOOSING THE RIGHT PILLOW FOR YOUR BEST NIGHT’S SLEEP

Testing out a pillow is an important part of

finding your perfect fit.

Are you wanting to infuse some excitement in a room? Think outside the box and off the walls! You can make a creative statement that earns the envy of every

visitor by contemplating the space right above your head, say the pros.

“Many people believe that artwork on your walls as well as furniture and décor accomplish much of the designing and decorating heavy lifting in your home. They often view ceilings merely as utilitarian spaces that function only to support overhead fixtures,” says Christine Villanueva, interior design expert with LuxeDecor in Chicago. “But decorating a ceiling offers a way to create a truly special design moment, personalize a living area, and possibly even create the illusion of a higher ceiling to make a room feel more spacious.”

Bobbi Jo Engelby, owner/lead designer at Charleston, S.C.-based Domain Interiors and Design, says homeowners are inclined to design at eye level within a given room.

“However, you can make a ceiling the focal point of a room without necessarily spending a fortune,” says Engelby. “Even a different shade of paint on the ceiling can completely change the vibe and lighting of a room.”

Enhancing a room’s ceiling can do more than potentially increase your home’s resale value. “It can give a room depth, character, and

balance,” says Leigh Spicher, national director of Design Studios for Atlanta-headquartered homebuilder Ashton Woods, who adds that foyers, dining rooms, living/family rooms, master bedrooms, and bathrooms can particularly benefit from ceiling treatments. Here are five worthy suggestions to enhance ceilings in your home.

1. Skip the white and opt for cool hues. “I like painted ceilings that are cooler in visual temperature than the surrounding walls, which adds a color interest to the room without making it feel enclosed,” Charmaine Wynter, design expert with Charmaine Wynter Interiors in Southlake, Texas, says. “Bedrooms, for example, often look best with a blue or grey ceiling, while dining rooms with high ceilings are awesome in pink or coral.”2. Add wallpaper. “A wallpapered ceiling adds just the right modern touch in a room and is perfect for difficult ceiling styles, such as rooms with shed or coffered ceilings,” says Villanueva. “If your wall space already feels too cramped, top off your ceiling with a bold wallpaper color or print to add major interest to the space without overwhelming the overall design of the room. And try using geometric patterns for major design points.”3. Think instant fix with a unique lighting fixture. A carefully chosen fixture like a

classic chandelier with black or caged crystals can add light and life to important first impression spaces like an entry or dining room. Customized fixtures often earns extra kudos from guests, too. “Investing in a locally crafted lighting fixture can give you not only a beautiful piece but a great story to tell,” Engelby says. Alternately, add some pizazz above your fixture with a medallion.4. Delve into deco. Also called “art deco,” this 1920s-influenced style employs curvilinear shapes, geometric patterns, bold hues, and sharply delineated edges to make a design statement. Deco panels or tiles are available in faux metallic materials and colors, like cracked copper, crosshatch silver, and brushed aluminum, and deco-themed fixtures like pendants and flush mount lights are plentiful, too. “Deco conveys high-style city living better than most designs, even though it’s almost a hundred years old,” says Jorge Simes, principal with Chicago-headquartered Simes Studios.5. Go for broke with a hand-sculpted plaster design. An experienced craftsman can fashion an ornate and detailed design across all or a portion of your ceiling, complete with floral motifs or symmetrical patterns that will be the talk of your neighborhood. “I’ve used local artists to hand sculpt designs to frame a lighting fixture on a ceiling,” says Engelby.

WHAT TO CONSIDER BEFORE TWEAKING OR UPGRADING A ROOM

by ERIK J. MARTIN | CTW FEATURES

Not everyone has the color coordinating savvy of a Nate Berkus, the fabric finesse of a Martha Stewart, or the room

makeover smarts of an HGTV host. But with the right mindset—and after doing a bit of homemaking homework—even the most fashion-flawed and decorating-deficient do-it-yourselfer can transform a living space from bland to grand. The first step, says Justin Riordan, founder of Spade and Archer Design Agency in Portland, Ore., is to put yourself in the shoes of a pro.

“In order to decorate like a designer, you must first think like one and try to remove all emotion from the decision-making process,” says Riordan. “Designers think with their heads, not their guts. That starts with considering what the house wants,

not what you want.”In other words, carefully examine the room

or living space you’re aiming to update and ponder its form, function, and flow.

“You have to ask important questions, like how is the space used and by whom, what activities will take place there, what current problems exist in the space that can be addressed with a new design, and what existing items might you want to reuse in the space,” suggests Lisbeth Linert, design instructor at Miami International University of Art & Design.Jacquelyn Moore-Hill, a Brooklyn, N.Y.-headquartered interior designer, agrees.

“What is the goal of the room? Do you want to create corners for conversation? Is the focus TV watching and game nights, or do you want a Zen-like retreat perfect

for book reading and de-compressing? Do you want kids to be able to play in the space?” asks Moore-Hill.

After getting a better idea of what you’re trying to accomplish with a room re-do, follow these eight recommendations for a foolproof room reinvention that any designer would applaud.

1. Apply math and art skills to the project. Take and record careful measurements of your space, and make a scale drawing using a graph paper notebook, with every square on the page equating to a foot, says Christian Gomez-Dold, principal designer with Gold Designs in San Francisco.

“Be sure to include all openings and sizes for windows, doors, and doorways in the room. For windows, measure the size of the opening and its distance off the floor,” he says. “Also, to gauge approximate window treatment height and width, measure from the floor to about four inches above the window—the height at which drapes should hang to make ceilings look higher and windows appear larger.”2. Hunt for ideas in print and online. Search through magazines, websites, and social media for styles, fabrics, colors, and décor that strikes your eye. “Look on Pinterest and study those images that stand out to you,” says Jaclyn Colville, interior stylist with Karin Bennett Designs.

3. Choose a focal point. Your room ideally should have an item or area that immediately attracts the eyes. “This could be your fireplace, your sofa, your pillows,or your artwork. A main focal point helps balance out any room and will make the space feel complete,” says Colville.

4. Shop smart. Spread your shopping across different retailers so your space feels personal and not representative of one showroom, utilize free design services available at many furniture retailers, and note the sizes, names, and upholstery/finish of each piece, suggests Gomez-Dold. “Hold off from purchasing until you’ve selected everything and you’re confident in the way all the pieces would fit together,” he says. 5. Invest in quality and longevity. “Buy the best and you’ll only cry once,” famous designer Miles Redd once said. Put another way, don’t go the cheapest route with furniture pieces and major decor; try to buy items built to last and avoid obsolescence.

“Spend your hard-earned cash on neutral or classic furniture, fixtures, and finishes that will last a long time, and steer clear of trendy items,” says Riordan. “If you want to add pops of color, do so on items that are easy to replace. And if you’re looking for trendy pieces, do so

inexpensively with pillows, accessories, and linens.”6. Consider proportion and scale when picking pieces. “The biggest mistake I see from do-it-yourselfers is choosing furniture that’s too big or too small for a space,” says Linert. “Bring your tape measure with you when shopping for items to make sure it properly fits your room.”

Same goes for smaller items. “Area rugs and accessories that are too small

for a large space tend to make the room look cluttered and messy,” Colville says. 7. Pick paint colors that will harmonize with virtually any furnishings and décor. Many experts recommend a neutral palette that blends well with the any new items you add to the room. To prevent painter’s remorse, “invest in paint samples of different colors and paint them directly on the wall. Every color looks different once it’s on the wall, depending on lighting and time of day,” says Moore-Hill. “Remember: It’s cheaper to buy a paint sample than to repaint an entire wall.”8. Cluster into collections. Closely grouping décor and accessories that share qualities like color, form, or type turns otherwise scattered accouterment into collections.

“For example, if you have a few colored glass items in the room, try grouping them on one surface, and supplement this collection with new items that share the same quality,” Gomez-Dold says.

With the return to midcentury modern as a dominant home décor trend,

many people are looking to the past to inspire their present. “Making Midcentury Modern” breaks down both the aesthetic and lifestyle of the 60s and 70s into 100 ways you can incorporate it into your own home and life.

Author Christopher Kennedy welcomes readers into his home and other spaces he has designed or admires, sharing advise on color, style, and furnishings along with little life lessons. Thoughts range from “less is more” and

“think pink” to “eat breakfast,” “wipe your mouth,” and “send a handwritten note.”

While the information is practical, it would also make a beautiful coffee table book, with its glossy full-page photos and bold cover. If midcentury modern is at all interesting to you, this book is right up your alley.
