The library will begin its fall session of story hour with "Happy
Halloween" on Saturday, October 28th. Come and join in the fun,
all are welcome! The story hours will be held each Saturday morning from October 28th through
November 18th from 11:00 till noon. The titles for next month’s story hours will be listed in November's
Pointer News.

SURVIVING THE HOLIDAYS
First Baptist Church of Point Marion will hold a two-hour grief seminar featuring some of the most
qualified in the GriefShare community. GriefShare is a grief recovery support group where you can find help and healing for the hurt of losing
a loved one. The seminar will take place on Tuesday
November 7th from 6:30-8:30 PM in the church social room.
Whether you have been grieving three weeks or three years this time is for you.
There is no cost to attend. Reservations are necessary to make sure everyone

A century old landmark is being razed on
Rt. 166 in Sprucetown a few miles north
of the Cheat River Bridge.
The landmark once known as "Springhill
Cottage" was a tourist attraction in the
1890's and early 1900's. Tourists from
Pittsburgh and other areas arrived on
packet boats and rail for their summer
vacation along the Monongahela and Cheat
Rivers. It could handle 30-40 guests at
one time in its 19 bedrooms. Meals were
also served. Rates were $1.00 per day.

Annual Halloween Parade to be held October 24th
The Point Marion Rotary club announces the date for the annual Halloween parade and requests that individuals wishing to help with judging or being in the parade to
contact David Callahan at 724-725-5717. Contributions toward the purchase of candy and treats and prize money are also being requested. Checks can be made payable to
the Point Marion Rotary and sent to Philip Rishel at 501 Morgantown St Point Marion, PA 15474.
Community support is vital to the success of this event for the children of Point Marion.
The parade forms behind Herod Funeral Home at 5:30 PM and steps off toward town at 6:00PM.
The parade is a public service project of your local Rotary Club. Join us for a fun evening.

Town Trivia For the month of October in . . . 1928—All ladies receive free chinaware this month when they attend Barney’s Theatre. *Over 200 people attended the celebration at St. Hubert’s Church as the basement (social hall) was now open. *A tri-town celebration was held with a parade with local drum and bugle corps marching. It was hosted by Legion Post 449 with
Smithfield and Fairchance Posts attending. 1931—Point Marion High School holds a program in memory of Thomas A. Edison. There was a display of a replica of his first
incandescent lamp. Services were also held for the great inventor at his home in West Orange, NJ. 1934—A Republican rally to be held at the B&O station. All republican candidates, including the Governor and Senator of PA, will
be in attendance. A Democrat rally to be held at the Odd Fellows Temple (former skating rink). All interested in the New Deal are
invited to attend. *Fifty men are currently working on the Nilan-Cheat Haven Road. Work is also progressing on the Stewartstown Road that will be
open to traffic next month. After these projects, the workers will install a guard fence from Locust Hill to the Cheat River Bridge. 1939—Poland Mine that has been idle for many years will soon reopen and hire 300 miners. There are also 101 coke ovens. 1941—Springhill Water Company plans a 50% water rate increase. Council protests. 1942—Martin and Foreman Barber Shop, one of the oldest business establishments is now under the ownership of Ray Foreman. He
bought out the interest of barber Harry Martin. James Curle will be the new barber in this shop. Their motto, “You never have to
wait!” They were located on Penn Street above the Barn Door. 1944—Point Marion soldier, PFC. James Demoucelle, will appear in the newsreel of Pathe News shown at Barney’s Theatre.
Newsreel of war scenes and soldiers were regularly shown at the theatre. *The S & J Café dining room will be closed on Sundays beginning October 22. The street floor restaurant part will continue to give
24 hour service seven days each week. 1950—Downtown streets are closed because of widening and repairs, some merchants are facing bankruptcy. A group traveled to
Harrisburg to seek action. Compared to last year, some businesses reported a 100% decrease in business. *Three Pittsburgh newspapers are delivered locally—Post-Gazette, Press, and Sun-Telegraph. *Textile plant looking to locate here. Interested workers are to fill out a job survey at the Borough Building. 1952—The town can boast of the only aviary in this district as a store opens on Railroad St. featuring a great variety of our feathered
friends. *Mrs. Frances Smith Kramer celebrates her 98
th birthday at her residence on Morgantown Street. She has been a resident of Point
Marion since 1918. Her great-grandfather, James Smith, was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and fought in the
Revolutionary War. Her grandfather was in the War of 1812 and her father Peter Smith, fought in the Civil War. Her direct
descendants fought in all of this country’s wars. 1957—Point Marion’s oldest resident, Mrs. Frances Bowers celebrates her 103
rd birthday on October 17.
1965—The biggest cooling tower in the United States is being built at the Fort Martin Power Station on the Monongahela River
south of Point Marion. An American flag was planted atop the 370 foot high structure in a ceremony held this month. 1974—*Plans were announced for a ten story, 154-unit apartment building to be constructed on Freeling Street on the site of the
lumber company, that will house the elderly and low income. A zoning variance hearing was scheduled. 1978—.The first Point Marion River Run –two miles--was held. It drew 239 entries from the tri-state area. The first and second
place winners (Alex Kasich and Carl Hatfield) are training to compete for a spot on the next U. S. Olympic team for long-distance
running. 1983—A Greene County man is fined $1,000 for killing a bald eagle. 1987—Hot air balloons from the Balloon Festival held at the Morgantown Airport land in Point Marion. 1998—The New Farm Inn, a restaurant located between Dilliner and Newtown in Greene Co. was destroyed by fire on October 6. It
was owned by the Gugliotta family. Items of Interest: World famous artist, Peter Max, was once employed as an artist at the Houze Glass Factory in Point Marion. He
currently is the subject of an article in the October issue of AARP magazine. He has been on the covers of Time, Life, Newsweek,
and the New York Times Magazine. He was also the artist-in-residence at the Knoxville, TN World’s Fair. The 79 year old artist
continues to paint, for big events, but also for famous groups and individuals. Another individual gracing a cover some time ago is David Bonvenuto. He is on the cover of Smart Business-a Pittsburgh
magazine. David is the son of the late Fred Bonvenuto, a graduate of Point Marion High School. The Bonvenuto family lived on
Grant St. for many years and still has relatives residing in this town. David is the CEO and President of Oberg Industries, a
Pittsburgh company that has been around for more than 60 years and currently has 750 employees. He has been with Oberg since
2001. He also is Chairman of the Board for Tri-State Bank. He is a graduate of West Virginia University and is a frequent visitor
to our area.
