Short Story Competition

For the short story writing competition in our November edition; taking inspiration from the pictures children have attempted to write short stories.

Winning Story: Peace and Harmony By Avaneesh Rathi, 11 years

One November night, a cold and frosty night, five men were roaming for a house to live in. The men were no ordinary people, they had different powers. This was not any ordinary night either it was Diwali(start of Diwali). They saw a brightly lit up and a big house with 10 people. The family was huddled around the fire and everyone was looking happy and peaceful with the guest. They were enjoying their time together. The boy in the family realises that the men outside are in trouble and need some help. The boy went out and ask what happen. One man said, “we are poor and can't afford a house and its winter we will freeze to death”. The boy ran to his dad and explained what had happened and said, Could they stay with us. 'Of course' dad replied. They both walked back to those five men. The dad said, "There are 3 empty rooms and with 2 double bed in each so you five can stay there for the temporary time." "Thanks," said the men seeing the generosity of the boy and dad. They said, "We have two rules." " We will tell you one first rule the rule is you can only pick one of us." The dad thought and said," You people tell give me all of your introduction." Ok said the man. They started introducing themselves. The first man said, "I am wealth." The second man said, " I am a success." The third man said, "I am wisdom."

The fourth man said I am well-being and the fifth man laughed and said they call me Harmony. The dad thought for a long time and said I want the fifth man harmony to stay with us. The second rule was revealed and It was the other follow harmony. I get

it said the father. The people turned out to be a blessing. Moral: Always stay in harmony.

Fulfill Other’s Hope By Aayush Chitre, 7 years There was a one man who was very normal. Then once he saw a person praying who had special power so the person which was watching him, thought if he prays he will get a special power, so he went to pray. The other lady was praying too. But smiling with her eyes closed. One day, he saw an old injured lion was being fed by a fox. So he thought this was a message from god and what he thought that message was to be hopeful like the lion. So he went back to town and lied on the floor. Then somebody came and gave him food. After that another smart man came and said, “what are you doing there?” So the man lying on the floor told him the entire story of the lion and the fox. He also told the message from the story- to be hopeful. The smart man replied, to be hopeful is good but to fulfill other people’s hope is even better. So now the man knew why the lady was smiling. As she had fulfilled someone’s hope and was contented herself. Moral: To be hopeful is good, but to fulfill others hope is even better.

There was a man named Christian and a lady named Senorita. Christian was thinking and Senorita was smiling. Few days later they got married and lived happily ever after. But when they got old Christian died and senorita cried. The end. Moral of the story: love each other.

Nazri and Sreeni By Aditya Kibe, 5 years There was once a king by the name of Nazri. He always wore a big turban and his wife Sreeni made fun of him. One day they were walking in their garden when a fire-breathing dragon came. Nazri blew the fireballs away with his sword. Then he took off his big turban and tied the dragon up. Happy Christmas Everyone!! We have a plum cake recipe here, especially for Christmas. Contributed by: Ramana Raval You can follow her at http://www.spiceursenses.com

Plum Cake - I had got all the ingredient's well before 1 week and had kept on kitchen slab last night to make sure that I don't forget to bake it today morning. It was a long pending ToDo in my list during X'mas and due to one or the other reason it was always missed... Whole night I was dreaming about the cake only and could not sleep for a very long time. As soon as I woke up, ran to kitchen and started baking the cake so that I can take the picture when the sun is still bright (Sun light always brings best pictures). If I would have got late then I would have not got so good pictures. Here the sun is so unpredictable and I don't get enough time to relax and do the work. That is the main reason I have to finish my blog work before noon. Any ways all this part of life I am learning to go with flow. Merry Christmas to everyone enjoy your day to the fullest...

Ingredients.

3/4 cup all-purpose flour 2+1/2tbsp cocoa powder 1tsp baking powder 1/2tbsp instant coffee 1/2 cup butter 2 eggs 1/2 cup sugar 1tsp vanilla essence 1/2 cup milk 1 cup mix berry's, nuts and tutti frutti. Baking Method.

Preheat oven to 180 degrees C. Butter the square baking pan and keep it aside.

Stir together the flour, baking powder and cocoa powder in a large bowl, set it aside.

Beat the butter and sugar with an electric mixer in a large bowl until light and fluffy. Add the egg and blend for another 1minute. Add the milk, coffee and vanilla essence in a small bowl and mix it well, then add it to the egg mixture and blend for another 30 to 40sec.

Add the dry ingredients and with the speed on low mix together slowly by making sure not to over mix. Then add the berry's, nuts and tutti frutti and mix everything with a spatula from the bottom to incorporate any bit that wasn't mixed.

Pour the batter into buttered pan and bake for 30 to 31minutes. Allow it cool before taking out from the pan, then cut and sprinkle some icing sugar on top.

Serve as you like.

Almonds are a power house, they should not just be confined for garnishing sweet dishes and thickening gravies, but made a part of daily routine. Recommended methods for consumption: Soak up to 10 almonds overnight, peel and have them on an empty stomach or along with breakfast. Health benefits include: -

1. Improves concentration and memory

2. Increases immunity

3. Glowing skin

Incorporate at least 2 soaked and peeled almonds in your child’s routine and observe the benefits in the long run. Almonds when consumed along with dates reduces indigestion, acidity and constipation. Powdered almond and walnut (3:1) can be added to milk to form a nutritious drink especially for kids and pregnant women. A pinch of nutmeg in the nutritious drink at night can take care of insomnia (Sleeplessness).

Acne is the most common problem for teenagers; put a few drops of almond oil in the navel wait for it to be absorbed naturally, while waiting dip a cotton ball in almond oil and massage the area around the navel for a few minutes. This can be done every day, for acne-free glowing skin.

I can post remedies specific to your requirements, please send in your request to [email protected]
