Cat and Dog Welfare Programme
Say No to Cat and Dog Meat charity advertisement
Starting fromSince the beginning of October, Animals Asia’s Say No to Cat and Dog Meat
charity advertisement aired in nine cities: Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Beijing,
Nanning, Nanjing, Guiyang, Haerbin and Changchun. Altogether 118 advertisements were
shown on screens near the bus station, the subway station and commercial streets, exposing
the truth behind the cat and dog meat black industry to more than 10 million people.
The three posters converted to advertisements came from the first and second prize works of
the Third Animals Asia Charity Advertisement design contest. According to media reports,
more than 10 million dogs and 4 million cats are sent to the table annually in China. In 2015,
Animals Asia released a series of in-depth investigation reports on China’s dog meat industry
chain. This serial investigation covered four years and uncovered the fact that there are no
dog farms in China, thus answering the question from media and animal protection groups
about the source of dog meat on the table: the dog meat in large supply is in fact from home
dogs or stray dogs being killed or stolen. We held the third advertisement design contest in
order to expose the truth about the dog and cat meat industry chain to the public, and inform
them of the various issues such as illegal activities, crime, food security, etc. involved so as
to encourage them to reach a sound decision to not eat cats or dogs.
Dog Management Work
To get an in-depth understanding of the situations and difficulties faced by local animal
protection groups with regard to dog management, since 2014, we have visited more than 30
cities. This month, we went to Shanghai, Nanjing and Gaoyou in Jiangsu province to learn
about the development and situations of its local groups. These groups include Shanghai
HomelessTa, WangAyi base in Pujiang, PPAR Shanghai, Shanghai FN Group, Nanjing
Pingan Afu, Nanjing Dog Shelter and Gaoyou Huguolongwang Temple Life Guarding Park.
These shelters have all encountered difficult situations and operate under different
circumstances, but they receive attention and support from local society at large and we will
continue to provide advice and assistance as needed.

TNR project for stray cats
TNR training in Ningbo:
To help the stray cats in Ningbo and the growth of Ningbo animal protection groups, on October
29th, Animals Asia cooperated with Lucky Cats to conduct in-depth TNR training for the UTNR
team of Ningbo Nottingham University, the Care for Stray Dogs Association in Ningbo
University, NTNR team of Ningbo University of Technology and the Rescue Platform for cats in
Ningbo. Since its founding, the UTNR team in Ningbo Nottingham University has kept in close
communication with us and we have been following their growth. Now, although still a young
group, they have developed into a professional TNR team and have achieved a 60-70% de-
sexing rate for stray cats on the university campus, winning the approval and support of the
university. The UTNR team also share their working experience with other schools.
During the training, teachers from Lucky Cat shared their experience in the field of TNR. Staff
from Animals Asia also answered questions from the trainees. The topics discussed ranged
from TNR projects for cats to various aspects of animal protection. This training not only helped
the trainees to improve the implementation of their TNR projects, but also expanded the
development path of animal protection work for local groups. While addressing the issues of
stray cats on campus, the team also hope to transmit the concept of caring for animals, and
how to operate as a team.

Conversation with Shanghai FN team and members of the community residents
committees
To move the TNR work forward in a positive direction, on October 31st, staff from Animals Asia
visited a community in Shanghai. We spoke with Mr. Lu, the leader of the community residents’
committee and volunteers from many communities. This community is the largest in which a
TNR project has been established by the Shanghai FN team with our support. This year, more
than 100 cats were de-sexed and the de-sexing rate reached around 70%, which basically
resolves the cat problem in the community. At the outset, the members of the committee knew
little about the TNR project and were against it, but now they have established a good,
cooperative relationship with the FN team.
During the conversation, Mr, Lu expressed his thanks to Animals Asia and the FN team, but
also mentioned difficulties the committee is facing in terms of financial shortage, lack of staff
and environmental problems rising from cat-feeding. The volunteers from various communities
also stated the difficulties that they have encountered and we discussed how to solve these
problems. Going forward, we will actively communicate with the FN team about taking
measures such as introducing a cat canteen, to conciliate the conflicts generated by feeding
stray cats. We hope that the TNR project will win more approval and the support of more
communities with the efforts of local animal protection groups.

everything about Dr Dogs, but they were initially anxious being
unable to see the dogs clearly. To set them at ease, the volunteers
described each dog, “The dog near you is called Duobao and he is a
yellow boy with a strong body and short hair. The other dog with long
hair is Betty and she is a little, white beauty”. The kids listened very
carefully to the volunteers to learn how to touch and interact with the
Dr Dogs.
