Who am I?
Not sure… Possibility Millicent’s first choice cancelled! Time away from work…paid, if I put in a plug for
Surpass (I will be available during break to talk to any Surpass users or those who might be considering new library automation software and I will briefly mention some new features of Surpass at the end of this presentation.)
No better work related fellowship than to be with a bunch of media specialists!
Why am I here?
New books? New technology? How to become the 2013-
2014 Exemplary Media Center?
What do they want to know?
Ain’t Got No Money!
Ain’t Got No Time!
Tips for understaffed, underfunded libraries run by underpaid, overworked
librarians!
“Cutting libraries during a
recession is like cutting hospitals during a plague.”
(Eleanor Crumblehulme)
•Determine the expectations teachers and administrators have for the library and you?•Determine the expectations YOU have.•Use the Exemplary Media Program rubric even if you aren’t applying. http://www.gadoe.org/Curriculum-Instruction-and-Assessment/Curriculum-and-Instruction/Pages/Library-Media-Services.aspx
• Look for things to laugh about…stories to tell in the teacher’s lounge or share with your spouse• Share funny quotes or comics *• Right some of these down…you
might can cash in on them someday (ever read 32 Third Graders and a Class Bunny?)• Keep a portfolio• Hold yourself to the same (or
higher) standards as teachers
• Document your day…prove you are indispensable! We are not who we use to be!• Know the standards and
incorporate them into every lesson.• Build vocabulary! Smarty Pants• Look for FREE stuff: boxes,
paper, loaner materials, volunteers (grandparents are tech savvy and available), apps…lets look at Aurasama
QR codes on steroids Create a free account, get students to
download app and join your library Take pictures of parts of your library Create videos or audio files that will be linked
to the picture. Specify places in your library for students to
scan

• Sponsor events that pay for themselves (reading nights with silent auctions…book baskets)• Do little things that mean a lot.• Steal from the best…tap into
the expertise on LM_net, Pinterest, COMO, consortiums, SLJ, Library Media Connections
• Share your expertise• Have fun with book spines
Challenge others to play with spine poetry.
• Even if you can’t afford, the technology, stay up with the latest trends/up and coming technology (just in case…)

“Libraries allow children to ask questions about the world and find answers. And the wonderful thing is that once a child learns to use the library, the doors to
learning are always open.”(Laura Bush)
“At the moment that we persuade a child, any child, to cross that threshold, that magic threshold into a library, we
change their lives forever, for the better.”
(President Barack Obama)
