HFA Backpack and School Supply Drive - Thank You!October 2013
By Michele Hulsman
The Hoboken Family Alliance is appreciative to the Hoboken community for making a successful third year of the Backpack & School Supply drive. We
are very pleased to have been able to enable needy children to come prepared to learn at the beginning of the school year.
Thank you to everyone who has donated generously by providing school supplies and/or monetary gifts. We appreciate our continued partnership from our drop off locations, Big Fun Toys and NYSC North.
Even though our official school supply drive was set to close on Sept 14, we would like to indicate no contribu-tion is ever marked tardy. There are families in home-less shelters and emergency housing that need school supplies throughout the year.
If you wish to contribute, please know there is plenty of time. Our need has not been diminished with the mod-
est economic recovery. For donations via Paypal please go to www.hobokenfamily.com/backpack and select the donate button. Email [email protected] for other donation options.
This year, our three recipient agencies, Division of Youth and Family Service (DYFS), In Jesus Name Charities and York Street Project have expressed much gratitude from the successful backpack and school sup-ply drive.
Two of the thank you letters are below:
“Thank you for the 23 back packs you donated to the families who needed to use the emergency food pantry since the end of August. We had them on hand to offer to the children whose parents were unable to prepare them for school or who did not participate in the several back-pack giveaways Hoboken organizations had this year. We let them select their own as a pleasant surprise when visiting the pantry. When one little 9 year old boy picked out his, a green and black urban graffiti design, he slipped it on and said- “This is my ’favorit-est’ book bag I had in my whole life.” It was a memorable moment for me and one I wanted to share. Thanks for brightening the back to school experience for these parents and children.”
– April Harris, Director In Jesus Name Charities
The back-to-school season for our children and young mothers is a very exciting time for everyone at York Street Project. What brings joy to our hearts is seeing the smiles on our children’s faces when they get their backpacks that are filled with colorful pencils, markers, glue, and paper! And while the children run off to show

the first person they see, what they got from York Street, their mothers are equally thrilled to know that they too will be prepared for school, when they receive their backpacks that are filled with rulers, calcula-tors, highlighters, notebooks, tape, and pens. For the mothers at York Street Project, receiving back to school supplies is a huge item to check-off their list. Now both mother and child are prepared to start the school year with the tools they need.
The young mothers who attend Kenmare High School and who live at St. Joseph’s Home struggle everyday to provide themselves and their children with the basic needs to get by each day. And this is why York Street Project exists. We are here to help not only provide basic needs, but we help to provide education, housing and life skill training, that helps to break the cycle of poverty. Our goal is to foster these families so that they can transition back into society and live a productive life.
These precious moments could not be made possible, if it weren’t for the support we receive from organizations like Hoboken Family Alliance. Thank you for all that you do to help enrich the lives of our young mothers and their children. This year the Hoboken Family Alliance made a generous donation of backpacks to the York Street Project that were distributed to our children and their mother’s living at St. Joseph’s Home.

HFA Volunteer OpportunitiesBy Steve Walkowiak
The Hoboken Family Alliance (HFA), a 100% volunteer organization, is growing in members and to help this growth we need your help!
Many of you have asked how you can volunteer…well, here’s your chance! HFA is looking for volunteers. Volunteering is a great way to get more out of your HFA membership. Not only will you be involved in the action but you will also meet other Hoboken families.
BLOG MAVENSAre you an HFA member that stays current with things that are going
on in town (and the world in general) and you would like to be able to post items of interest to our blog? We could use your help! We are look-ing for new ways to make our website more informative by expanding the offering of topics and events that we post to our pages. We are always looking for things to do around town, tips about good products or services in the area, and news items that are helpful or informative to our members. You could also help post items that come in to us from various sources like local merchants, museums and charities.
This is an opportunity to get some experience with the operation and maintenance of a website and blog, as well as volunteering for a non-profit. We could use several people for this task, so if you are interested in giving it a try, send an email to [email protected].

Why not try a different tradition this Halloween season. Many Zoos in the area host “Boo at the Zoo” events. We went to the Philadelphia Zoo, a great size for small children that want to walk around themselves and don’t want to be restricted to the stroller. We saw the animals, our main reason to go to the zoo, but we were also able to “trick or treat” at special areas listed on a map which is great for children like mine that like to be the leader and plan our route and it was free with the price of admission. You can dress up or not, either is fine and you can take in craft workshops, magic shows, pumpkin dis-plays, hay mazes, etc. depending on the zoo.
