Meet the President,
Dr. James Burkett
By Kelly Ellis, Editor
I didn’t know what to expect
during my interview with Dr. Burket as
I anxiously awaited his arrival in the
lobby. We have all seen him walking
the hall in his trademark boldly col-
ored shirts and matching socks. But I
wasn’t sure if his personality would
also match. I was surprised when he came out and greeted me
with a warm, friendly smile. He made me comfortable and ready
to conduct my interview.
I was already aware of his criminal justice background,so I
asked him how he felt about having a criminal justice program in
place of the massage therapy program on campus. Dr. Burkett
said, “It would be nice to have a criminal justice program on cam-
pus. Virginia College is conducting market research to find a pro-
gram to replace the massage therapy program. The research is
based on the greatest need for jobs in the community, hiring re-
quirements, and the qualifying credentials needed to work in that
field.”
Dr. Burkett was very charismatic and easy to talk and has
an open door policy for students. He is currently working on a
ride share program for student transportation and an essay con-
test to win a free bus pass for a month.
“You’ve got to learn it to earn it,” he closed the interview by
stressing the importance of student attendance because it not on-
ly improves your grade, but also keeps you from missing a lot of
valuable information that is helpful to you in your class as well as
your career.

"It is my considered opinion that the hairdresser is the most influential person in any community. When the public goes to a hairdresser, something happens to them. They feel safe, they relax….” John Steinbeck

Dear Students,
When you think about your immediate
goals, what comes to mind? Perhaps it’s perfect
attendance for the current term, or making the
Dean’s list, maybe it’s successful completion of
your program, and getting a new job that offers
better hours and better pay. Taking the time to
set goals can add new meaning to your life by helping you to realize
your dreams. Jim Rohn, well-known entrepreneur, author and motiva-
tional speaker, expressed the following about the importance of goal
setting-- “Goals. There’s no telling what you can do when you get in-
spired by them. There’s no telling what you can do when you believe in
them. There’s no telling what will happen when you act upon them.”
What powerful statements!
Successful goal setting requires that you first decide what you
want to achieve. Next, establish a timeline for achieving the goal. Be
sure to write or type the goal and always stay on track by reviewing it
often and checking your progress. Focus is the key to success. And
once you achieve the goal, take time to enjoy and celebrate! You’ll be
amazed by what you’ve accomplished over time.
Best wishes,
Tanya A. Hollins, MBA, Interim Academic Dean
A Note from the Dean
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Hearing the words “breast cancer” doesn’t always mean
there is an ending; it can be the beginning of learning
how to save yourself and other women as well. The
American Cancer Society estimates that 1.3 million cases of breast
cancer will be detected each year. Breast cancer is caused by abnor-
mal cells that settle in the tissues of the breasts.
Yearly breast screenings increase the chances of early detec-
tion. Doing breast self-exams monthly to check for tissue changes,
lumps, and tender spots can aid in early detection. Getting regular
mammograms is the main way to detect early forms of cancer. Saving
a life from breast cancer starts by knowing your own body and keeping
your immune system strong. Learning the risk factors, making lifestyle
changes, and being responsible, are all means of taking a stand
against breast cancer and to saving the tatas! Read more at http://

The holidays
are fast approach-
ing which makes
saving money a must. An
easy way to save some mon-
ey is to create a good budget.
Here are some budgeting tips
to help you along the way.
A budget helps keep
you honest about your spend-
ing. In order to have a good
working budget, first be hon-
est about the money you
spend. It is imperative to al-
ways know where your mon-
ey is going.
Next, calculating living
expenses is mandatory be-
cause you will need to know
how much it costs to live.
Compile hard copies of all
your bills including ones that
are automatically drafted from
a bank account. Calculate the
amount of money that comes
into your household. This is
monthly income. Now, let’s
start subtracting the monthly
expenses from the stack of
bills. The remaining amount is
what you have left to spend.
This should provide
you with a good snapshot of
where money is
being wasted and
areas where you
can cut back.

Professionalism encompasses a
broad perspective of life advancement, ca-
reer progression, and positive life princi-
ples. Professionalism can fit into many
categories, such as being on time, dress-
ing for success; wearing the appropriate
hair styles, make-up and jewelry, speaking
properly, respecting others regardless of
the situation. I challenge us all to take the
word professionalism and make it a way of
life, so it will assist us to flourish into the
professionals so that we might evolve into
the professionals we are destined to be
and convey positive behavior and manners
to our friends and family.
We must always remember that
progress and preparation do not stop; it is
an ongoing process. There will be times
when we question ourselves, wondering if
this college venture is worth it. I say yes,
along with the academic knowledge, as
much as Virginia College instructors
demonstrate and reiterate professionalism,
it is all worth it.

Lonely grave on the hill,
bleak and desolate with winter’s
chill.
I stand there, my pain and heartbreak for all to see,
heeding not
The cold wind blowing about me.
Oh, but cry I must, and cry I will,
at the lonely grave on the hill.
For I’ve lost not only my husband,
but my best friend too,
a man whose love was true,
one who always put me first, himself last.
I wrap myself in the memories of the past.
I miss you so much each waking day.
I miss your touch and the little things you would say.
The sharing of what life might bring,
the fun we had doing things,
at the zoo or on the beach sand,
walking everywhere hand in hand.
With you everything was better,
simply because we were together.
The sun is setting, the wind increasing its chill,
but still I stand at the lonely grave on the hill.
For you tomorrow never came.
But for me life continues on the same.
The wound in my heart is deep and will never heal.
But know my husband, my love is real.
I’ll wear your name the rest of my life.
For all of eternity, I’ll be your wife.
I touch your grave, and wipe the tears from my eyes.
Then, slowly, I rise.
As I turn to walk away, I promise to come another day.
And bracing myself against the night’s chill,
I leave my heart
at the lonely grave on the hill.
