HORNBY HELPLINE ASKING FOR HELP
Everyone in Hornby & Farleton is very
welcome to ask for help whenever needed and this is how you do it:
a) Phone the Institute Monday – Saturday between 10.00am and 12.00pm (015242 22227) to ask for what you need.
If the job requires transport to be arranged, please could you give 48 hours’ notice, and more notice would be even more appreciated.
(I’m afraid that we can’t run as an emergency service as the
coordinators and volunteers aren’t always free to respond im-mediately. Some are at work and others may just be out for the day.)
b) Please don’t ask the volunteer who helps you the first time to
come on subsequent occasions as we try to spread out every-one’s tasks equally. Just phone the Institute as above.

HORNBY PENSIONERS’ ASSOCIATION What a Feast we had on our September trip to Scorton Barns for Afternoon Tea. We had a delicious meal and nearly all came home with doggy bags as well. Highly recommended to anybody who missed it. The scenic tour around the Glasson/Cockerham area made an in-teresting and enjoyable change to our usual routes. Tremendous thanks to Kath for all the extra work involved – it was well worth your efforts! Coffee Morning Thank you to everyone who supported our Septem-ber Coffee Morning, which was much enjoyed by so many people. As this was our last one for this year, it's time to give a HUGE thank you to the team who have worked so hard to make these mornings go so smoothly this year: Barbara, Beryl, Brenda, Doreen, Eileen, Elsie, Ethel, Josie, Kath, Meg and Shirley, plus the willing volunteers who have given us a hand when we have needed it: THANK YOU! October Trip This year our Autumn tints tour to Penrith and Sil-loth will be on Tuesday, 8
th October, leaving Hornby at 10am and
returning by 5pm. There will be a stop for lunch and a stop for tea. The cost is £6 to members and £8 to non-members. If you have not yet been able to book, you can catch Kath in the Institute Reception on Tuesday and Friday mornings. As a last resort, you can call Kath on 015242 21845. Potato Pie Supper This popular event in our calendar will be held at 7pm on Tuesday, 12
th November in Hornby Institute. Tickets for the
meal will be £8 per head and Kath will be taking bookings and pay-ment in the Institute Reception on Tuesday and most Friday mornings from 22nd October. We will play a half-card of Bingo afterwards. Games Evenings Our October Whist & Dominoes evenings in Horn-by Institute will be on the 5

It is just a year since the pool in Hornby was re-opened following a technical refurbishment and su-perb modernisation by community volunteers. The team at LVCS wish to thank community volunteers, local schools, clubs and public swimmers and all those who have done so much to get the pool up and running and have supported us during this first, very exciting and eventful year. The first LVCS AGM will be held on Tuesday October 15th in the Hornby Institute at 7.30pm. This most valuable Lune Valley asset needs the support of the community to survive and prosper. We need your input - it’s your pool! Please come along, meet the team and tell us what you think. We would like to see a full house so that we can discuss and approve our plans for the future. Any matters to be raised at the AGM should be submitted to Bob McGachie Chair of LVCS. [email protected]. Even if you can’t make it to the AGM do please keep in touch. HORNBY ST MARGARET’S C.E. PRIMARY SCHOOL
We are well into the first term of a new academic year and the children are getting stuck into some fun and challeng-ing work. We have welcomed Sam, Ralph and Sid to our reception class and we are enjoying hearing about our ex-pupils who are now settling into secondary school.
In class, the juniors have been writing some animal fact files, design-ing posters outlining the properties of 2D shapes and starting to dis-cover more about our local rivers. The infants have been working hard rewriting the Tiger Who Came to Tea and learning all about Mary Seacole, a very special nurse who helped soldiers during the Crimean War. On top of all that work, the first school trip of the year has already tak-en place! This time to a very wet and very muddy Westmorland Show. It was great to see the children making the most of the day, enjoying the animals, vehicles and exhibitions. They were very proud to see their work on display in the schools’ tent and were inspired by work from other children too. Here is a seasonal prayer that Summer has written: Dear God, As the darkness draws in, you are the light in my heart, As the air turns colder, you are the warmth in my soul, As the stars are revealed, you renew my spirit, As the moon shines, I know I am held safe in your arms, As the days pass, you will always be with us. Amen

HORNBY FLOWER CLUB What a great start to the Flower Club's new pro-gramme. Pamela from Flower Fields in High Bentham delighted us with her autumn arrangements. She made a number of small arrangements suitable for a table or window ledge with seasonal flowers in beautiful colours of sunburn orange, lively yellow and purple all held to-gether with harvest grasses.
Next month is really special as we have Vicky and Charlotte from The Flower Bank, our own flower shop here in Hornby. As well as show-ing their creative ability I am sure they will be updating us on the changes to the shop (which are really lovely) and the forthcoming workshops. So come along on Thursday 17th October at 7.30pm at Hornby Insti-tute and enjoy the evening.

ROTARY CLUB OF LUNESDALE Another Rotary year has dawned and Miles Leadbetter is the new District Governor at the helm. On 30th June some members went to Barton Grange for the handover from the outgoing Governor. The title of Miles's inaugural speech was "Together We Can". It was a thought-provoking speech encouraging members to "Think Differently" especially in terms of recruitment and winning new mem-bers. Recruitment is a problem area for all charity organisations in to-day's busy world which makes so many demands on our time. Howev-er, it was so uplifting to hear about the many worthwhile causes sup-ported by Rotary on all levels making a positive contribution of help where, how and when it is needed around the world. At local level, members have welcomed speakers each with a topic we are familiar with. There was a prolonged question and answer session after each of the speakers. On 1st August, Ben Cross, Manager of Booth's Kirkby Lonsdale store, talked about the history of the company and how it has grown to its present-day position. He stressed how the company is keen to be in-volved in local communities. On 8th August, Sarah Garmin spoke about the incredible work done by the Bendrigg Trust. Andrea Toghy spoke about the charity shop in Bentham which raises money to help people suffering from the condi-tion Scoliosis or Curvature of the Spine. At the time of writing this article, we look forward to an evening of Jazz with High Society at the Victoria Institute Bentham. All proceeds from the evening will be divided between The Community Link Cafe Low Bentham and Age Concern High Bentham. As always, a big thank you to everyone for your support on this occa-sion.
